Inflammation Zone

Thursday, November 24, 2011

Recently picked up a copy of the Inflammation Zone by Barry Spears. He makes a great point about food. Food is to be treated as though it is a medication. Food is a drug that can either enhance your life or damage your life. One meal can increase your health, just as one meal can harm your health. I am trapped in a series of do-overs and start agains. I am in a lifelong battle of never eating properly even when I thought I was. I am now working with a nutritional advisor and will start a detox program after Thanksgiving. I am constantly shocked by foods I thought were healthy and are not. Will this time be any different? Will this begin a new future?

Starting Over

Tuesday, September 20, 2011

Again and again and again. The cycle has not been broken. Life intervenes. I get off track and I come back heavier than ever! I feel great defeat. Will I ever discover the real reason for my obesity? I know the cause is eating more junky foods than I should and eating less healthy foods than I should. I know that the portions I eat are too large. I know what a healthy meal should look like. There has to be an underlying cause. I know all the right things to do and know that I am the one putting my health at risk yet I continue. I certainly wouldn't allow my family members to do something this destructive! So why do I allow myself? How do I end this cycle? I have been so certain in the past that this time would be different and yet here I am again - defeated and heavier. . . and disgusted with myself.

you may need to take one small step at a time. Pick one thing to change....such as just recording what you eat for maybe 2 weeks. just eat what you normally eat and just record the facts. after that then look at your calorie recommendation from spark and try to eat within those limits.......don't worry about healthy or not...just one step at a time...gradually add another area to work on ..planned exercise (start small and simple ) no need to pull any muscles...rest your injuries and start slow( ask dr for exercise advise)
you are doing great.......just don't overwhelm yourself...Rome wasn't built in a day. Love yourself and be kind to yourself. wishing you peace and happiness in your adventures. emoticon emoticon

When the going get's tough, the tough keep going. The key is to NEVER give up. You may have to start over and over again, but NEVER give up. emoticon

Artificial Sweeteners - another aha moment!

Saturday, July 09, 2011

Been back on SP for 3 weeks now. In this time I have eliminated my use of artificial sweeteners and paid attention to portion sizes. Instead of having that starving feeling that I expected, I have found that i am not craving sugary foods. I did have a moment where I really wanted ice cream but waited it out and had a peach instead. The surprising part - it worked!!!! This surprised me greatly because I am a "don't want to live in a world without icecream" kinda person. I truly believe that getting back to real sugar has helped me reduce cravings. Aha!

I know how hard it can be to wait those cravings out so congrats on your willpower. emoticon
This is your "aha" moment showing you that you'll do better without fake sugars. I've gone through this before and try not to drink my beloved Diet Pepsi too often. It can be difficult some days, but I remember the domino effect that it'll have.

Cholesterol Aha Moment!

Tuesday, July 05, 2011

I have high cholesterol that ranges from 250 to over 400. I have my blood levels checked every 3 months. I just haven't found a medicine that will help and not cause painful side effects. The only time my levels were anywhere near 200 was when I spent about 3 months really concentrating on what I ate. Then of course, life happened and I reverted right back to my old ways.

I've been back on sparkpeople for 2 weeks and have diligently logged in my daily nutritional intake. Well, I have found that eggs are my bane! I mean I knew that eggs were supposed to be high in fat and cholesterol but holy cow, I had no idea that they would triple my daily cholesterol intake!! I am now convinced that I will never eat another egg yolk again! The egg websites will try to convince you to eat the yolk too. The yolk contains the fat soluble vitamins. The yolk also contains more than 200mg of cholesterol while the white contains so little that the amount is listed as 0mg! If you eat two whole egss, you consume about 500mg of cholesterol! yowch!

Aha! I can eat my egg whites and lower my cholesterol too! Yum!

I have the same problem with egg yolks. Egg Beaters does wonderful things for me. I eat lots of ground flaxseed but have not been satisfied with it as an egg replacement in some baked goods.

AND I read on a flaxseed meal package that you can substitute 1 Tbl of flax mixed with 3 Tbl of water for 1 egg when baking!! Will try it out and let you know how it tastes . . . BTW unsweetened applesauce is a perfect substitute for any oil/butter when baking. I use applesauce all the time and there is no taste or consistency difference in the baked goods. emoticon

Colonial Parkway Bike Ride

Colonial Parkway
From the nps.gov webpage -
An integral part of Colonial National Historical Park this 24 mile scenic Colonial-style highway connects Jamestown, Colonial Williamsburg and Yorktown. Its panoramic vistas, gently winding curves, through patches of Pine and Evergreen forest, constantly leaves the visitor with an expectation as to what the next curve may bring forth.
