TRX, the day after

Monday, January 16, 2012

Yesterday was my weekly TRX class at Golds Gym. The first class, a few months ago now, nearly killed me. Now I am able to keep up and do the more difficult 3rd progression versions of some exercises. It feels good to see some progress in my strength and it helps my motivation to have paid for a class beforehand!

I've found it difficult to stick to exercise classes in the past (spin, aerobics) but I enjoy doing TRX. I don't seem to have a lot of core strength and the TRX trainer targets the core. Sometimes I am very sore the day after a class but today I'm feeling fine. I'm considering adding another TRX class to my week if I can work it into my schedule.

Cardio boredom

Thursday, January 12, 2012

One of my challenges is overcoming boredom at the gym. I don't like to watch the news while working out because it stresses me out when I am trying to de-stress, and sometimes music isn't enough. Thankfully podcasts are free and they keep my mind active and entertained while I am doing my time on the cardio machines. Some of my favorites are:

- The Moth (great personal stories from all kinds of people)
- Fresh Air (interesting interviews)
- Radiolab (interesting exploration of changing topics)
- Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me! (funny quiz show)
- TED Conferences (when I need to be inspired)
- Savage Love Podcast (entertaining sex and relationship advice)

I wonder what other people do to avoid boredom when at the gym...?

Hadn't thought of doing affirmations at the gym but it's a great idea!

Been thinking about getting a Kindle. I've got an iPad but am afraid of dropping it while doing cardio! lol I'm guessing the kindle is nice and light, a good thing when moving on a machine.

I say affirmations or music on my mp3. Sounds like you have it covered... I have heard Fresh Air, Wait, Wait, and Ted and enjoy them thoroughly... good choices. Keep up the good work!!!

I read on the treadmill or on the bikes. Just have to zip out my kindle and get started. Sometimes I listen to music on my shuffle. I don't have a regular I-Pod for podcasts. Those sound like interesting ones.

Back yet again.

Monday, January 09, 2012

It's been a long time since I used SP, but I'm ready to give it another shot. My diet's not bad, but I have a very hard time making it to the gym regularly. I joined a TRX class a few months ago. It's a challenge because I don't have enough core strength but I've been able to stick with it. Now I just need to motivate myself to get to the gym more often between classes. Recording my diet helped with portion control and snacking when I did SP the first time, and I lost weight. I'm hoping to stick with it again to help reduce my "love handles". My partner and I are planning to attend a wedding in Hawaii at the end of next year and I want to be able to wear a bathing suit!

I love to make smoothies because they are easy, filling and relatively healthy. My favorite is a creamy blueberry banana blend:

- 1 lg ripened banana
- 1 cup frozen blueberries
- 1 cup vanilla soy milk
- 1 tsp ground flax seed
- honey to taste
- pinch of nutmeg or cinnamon
- ice cubes
- 1/2 cup nonfat vanilla yogurt (optional)

Blend till smooth and add more ice to thicken or more soy milk to thin, depending in preference. I like it thick!

That looks quite good - i agree with Dennis, it ought to be shared with SparkRecipes. How many servings is the recipe?

Swimming Pool

Wednesday, July 22, 2009

Just moved in with my partner and now have a pool at my disposal but am too self-conscious to use it! It's the combination of farmer's tan and big, pasty white belly that keep me from enjoying our pool. Besides, I don't have a bathing suit that fits me! This is today's motivation for watching what I eat and how I exercise.

Who is the artist for this painting? I remember similar scenes from all my modern art history, but can't recall who it was.

But looking at the scene, I would be self-conscious with a Michael Phelps body if I was being stared at like that by the person above water!

True Dennis... I've always had body image problems since I was a kid and overweight. I was slim in college, but was very critical of my body back then. When I look back at old photos I can't believe I wasn't happy with what I had. I'd kill for that body now! I try to keep this in mind when being hyper critical of myself now, reminding myself how distorted my view of my body tends to be.

Anyway, I'm working on the courage to face the pool soon, while it's still summer.

Happy 1st blog! Farmer's tan? Never mind, this is the age of the internet, I found it in five seconds - on Wikipedia, no less! I like the pool as a motivation, but I'm also a fan of coming from a place of self-acceptance. For us gay folk, that can be particularly difficult.
