Oh what a difference a few weeks can make! I haven't been nearly as dedicated and focused as I set out to be a few months ago - but you know what - I've had lots of changes going on and things to think about. I won't dwell in the past because tomorrow is an opportunity and today is the day to get back on track!

I was approached by my boss in early June about an opportunity for growth within our company. Having had so many doors in my life come to a close all at once, I jumped on the opportunity to make a change and start fresh. So here I am - living in Portland, Oregon!

There are many great things about this move that I'm looking forward to, but I will outline a few of them that relate to my weight loss and fitness goals here:

- I now live in downtown Portland, OR - one of the best cities for pedestrian, biking, and public transportation. Leaving the car parked in the garage will allow me to be more active physically.
- I live 3 blocks from the office, which means I can not only walk to work, but also can walk home for lunch and even have impromptu workouts in the apartment's gym. No more long Atlanta commutes.
- The grocery store is an 8 block walk, and on Saturdays, there is a huge farmer's market just 4 blocks from my apartment.
- I have 24/7 access to the apartment gym. While not huge, it has some great equipment. There is also a gym at the office I have yet to check out. I plan on trying to get 2 workouts in daily - one focused on cardio and one on weight training.
- There are so many parks and walking trails here just waiting to be explored.

I do feel guilty that I have been away from my SparkFriends for so long and haven't been there to support them. I'm back now though and am more focused than ever on both myself and my fellow Sparker's journeys.

To all of my Atlanta SparkFriends - I'm not going anywhere even though I'm across the country. You all are such a great group and have been such a motivation I definitely want to keep ties!

Oh.. and I'm down almost 11lbs since I started my journey earlier this year and have lost 5lbs alone since I moved to Portland 2 weeks ago. Here's to getting it back in gear!

June Personal Goals

Tuesday, May 31, 2011

Here are my goals for June. Some may seem like no-brainers, but they are things that I want to keep tally of:

- Log into SparkPeople and track food consumption everyday (except June 9-12 when I will be at Bonnaroo and without internet access).
- Burn at least 3,500 calories a week through exercise.
- Weight-train at least 2 days per week with emphasis on arms and upper body.
- Weigh-in each Friday and post my weigh-in results via blog.
- Eat breakfast everyday before leaving the house.
- Limit sweet foods/sugar intake (and their analogs such as Skinny Cow) to one serving per week.
- Find alternative workouts for Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays when I don't have access to the gym at the office.

I hope that by following these goals I can get under 240lbs by the end of June and break this plateau I've been in.

I'm back from my travels to the beach and to Alabama for the Memorial Day Weekend. I had planned on keeping tabs with my food tracker on SparkPeople, but kind of disconnected while I was away. At the beach, I managed to eat fairly healthy during the day, but of course the restaurants called at night and I didn't do a great job at making the best decisions. I did burn quite a few calories boogie boarding in the ocean. I won't dwell on the poor choices - It's done and now it is time to move on!

I'm going to post my June goals today in a separate blog entry so they are there in writing and can hold me to some accountability.

Hope everyone had a great Memorial Day Weekend!

Hi! Welcome back! I'm glad you enjoyed your get away and I can tell by your blog you had a blast! Boogieboarding...wow! It's ok that you had a small splurge in food choices - as long as you get back on board and keep at it! You are still doing an awesome job! I wish you continued success and get ready you still have so much of the summer left to enjoy!

Did 60 minutes + 5 minute cool down on the elliptical tonight at a pretty high resistance. Turned out to be the equivalent of 4.8 miles and burned 1100+ calories. This new playlist is really getting the job done. Here are a few selections of songs from it:

Pump It - Black Eyed Peas
Teach Me How to Jerk - Audio Push
Bootylicious - Destiny's Child
Till the World Ends - Britney Spears
Get Me Bodied - Beyonce
Love Shack - B-52s
What You Waiting For? - Gwen Stefani
Party Rock Anthem - LMFAO
We Run This - Missy Elliott
You Get What You Give - New Radicals
Hella Good - No Doubt
The Way You Move - Outkast
Raise Your Glass - P!NK

Many of them are cliche I know... but they have great beats!

Tomorrow I'm going to try and get up early enough to have a weight training session at the gym before work and then do my cardio after work. I think working out twice a day will help me get through this plateau. The only problem? I am NOT a morning person. We'll see if I can roll out of bed when the 6:30am call comes.

Hope everyone is having a great week!!

Shins get in the way....

Monday, May 16, 2011

So I've decided to spend part of my cardio workout at the gym on the treadmill and the other part on the elliptical. I'm trying to switch things up so my body doesn't get accustomed to just one thing. Well - after walking/jogging through my neighborhood (1.5 miles on the road and sidewalk) each day this past weekend, my legs must be revolting. While I managed to get 1 mile in on the treadmill before switching to the elliptical, my shins were in agony. I think it's all the pavement I ran on over the weekend. I'm overdue for getting fitted for new tennis shoes, so maybe that's the next step I should take.

I really want to build my running endurance up, but I'm finding it very difficult. I am noticing my cardio endurance is increasing, as my heart rate no longer climbs as high as it was climbing. The highlight of the workout: once on the elliptical, I was fine and did 2.8 miles in 30 minutes.

So 45 minutes of cardio under my belt - but it was the hardest 45 minutes of cardio I've had in a couple of months.

Good for you getting that cardio in! I also like the rowing machine as a switch up. It is really quite a workout and gets the upper body involved also. Might allow your shins some rest time.

I'm familiar with that shin pain--I have it much more frequently when running on pavement/asphalt. Treadmill/elliptical work/new shoes sound like a good plan. Most of all, you are staying active...pain or no pain. Just don't injure yourself! Good luck in meeting your goals--you can do it! Peace, Todd
