I'm still around...

Tuesday, October 23, 2012

I can't believe it has been so long since I last updated. OK, yes I can. It has been a hectic, insanely busy last few months. Work and school have kept me super busy. Fortunately, I haven't let these things derail me (too much).

I ran the Portland Half-Marathon on October 7th. Definitely am proud of myself for taking on the challenge. My goals were to finish and not be last place in my age division. I accomplished both. I actually surprised myself with my performance. Although I really wanted to finish in under 3 hours, my hip flexor started acting up around Mile 10, and I had to take it easy towards the end of the race and walk more than I wanted. I ended up finishing in 3:07. I did PR my previous 5k time. Going into the half, I was content to check if off my bucket list. Now that I've completed one, I have the fever. Looking forward to my next half... maybe the Rock 'n Roll in May?

While training and recovering from the half marathon, I took a break from my CrossFit training. I just started back last night, and can definitely feel it today. It amazes me how great I feel after one of the challenging workouts - must be all of the endorphins. Looking forward to continuing with CrossFit twice a week, and filling the rest of the time with other fun activities.

On the weight-loss front, I have been relatively plateaued over the past month. That's partially due to a lack of focus on what I was eating, and the recovery from the half marathon. I'm officially down to 221.8 pounds - 35 pounds lost since I began this journey back in February 2011. My goal for the rest of October is to get out of the 220s once and for good.

Hope all is well with my fellow sparkers! Keep it up and remember - small changes can make big differences. Have a great week!

I totally spaced leaving a comment yesterday when I read your blog LOL hectic afternoon.
Sounds like you're doing great even as busy as you've been.
Well done on your Half - that's fantastic! We may have passed each other at some point, as I was out there as well, but didn't finish nearly as nicely as you did.

September Goals

Saturday, September 01, 2012

First - to toot my own horn - I made my August weightloss goal. I wanted to lose 8.0lbs in August, and lost 8.2lbs. It felt amazing to see 225.8 on the scale this morning. Motivation for September goals.

- Complete CrossFit Jump Start classes (2 more weeks)
- Attend 2 CrossFit 201 classes per week
- Continue to eat Paleo on a 80%/20% split (1 treat meal per week)
- Run each weekend in preparation for the Portlamd Half Marathon in October
- Lose 6lbs this month (1.5 lbs per week)

Losing 6 lbs would put me at 219.8lbs on October 1st. I desperately want out of the 220s, and think September is the month to make that happen.

Here's to a fantastic month!!!

AWESOME job for the month of August! That's a great job!
Good goals for September. Not impossible, but certainly is a challenge! My goal for September is a 8 lb loss, but I'll be happy with a single pound. I haven't lost anything for a while, but that's my own fault.
Good luck and good fitness!

Weekly Weight and CrossFit Update

Saturday, September 01, 2012

Hey Sparkers!

Quick check-in. Still eating paleo and doing CrossFit and couldn't be happier. I havent felt this good in a long while. I'm not really tracking food anymore - I eat when I am hungry and can have a a variety of things. Foods I've given up as part of Paleo: breads, grains, legumes, pasta, white potatoes, peanuts, and refined sugar. I eat all of the veggies, meats, healthy fats (there is such a thing) that I want. I have 1-2 servings of fruit a day. I used to think strawberries were tart and not very sweet. Now, they're amazing.

CrossFit has become part of my routine. The jump start classes are really great for learning proper form and technique. I'm starting to feel a difference in my body - I feel my core is stronger, and new muscles are starting to make an appearance. My clothes fit better. Sure, after a workout, such as this week's 2000m row + 70 assisted pushups, I am tired, sore, and sweaty. I'm also in the best mood. I'm sleeping better. I really wish I had made this change a year ago, but I think I had to journey here to get my confidence and courage.

I'm making progress on my weight loss and am building muscle. Here are my results this week.

Beginning weight (3/2011): 257 lbs
Last week's weight: 228.8 lbs
This week's weight: 225.8 lbs
Weight lost this week: -3.0 lbs
Total weight lost: -31.2 lbs

I'm determined to get out of the 220s soon!

Have a great and safe holiday everyone.

Weekly Recap and CrossFit Update

Sunday, August 26, 2012

Hey fellow Sparkers! I hope everyone had a good week. I'm still doing really well with the Paleo eating. I'm finding that the cravings for grains, breads, etc are just about gone. I did have a couple of cookies one day this week, and let me just tell you, totally not worth it. I literally felt like I had a hangover afterward. From here on forward, cookies out - fruit is in.

I also started my CrossFit jump start classes on Monday of this week. The classes are designed to work on form and get members used to the CrossFit workout methodology. There are six of us in my group class who will be working with the same trainer Twice a week over the next 4 weeks. We then get a free week of CrossFit 201 classes. It's a great design to help integrate people and lower the intimidation.

Monday we did squats. Lots of squats. My body is not used to squats at all. We also did some weight lifts, and then as many burpees as we could do in seven minutes. If you don't know what a burpee is, YouTube it. I managed 52 of them in seven. At the end of our 4 weeks, we'll test again for improvement.

By Wednesday, the delay onset muscle pain was horrendous. My coworkers were laughing at (with) me, because I walked like a penguin. All of the stretching in the world could not relieve my aching stiff muscles. This pain, however, is a good thing. It means my muscles were rebuilding - getting stronger. It was also an indicator of how out of shape I am, as well as what muscles I haven't been using in my typical gym workouts.

Wednesday, I wasn't sure how I was going to do it, because I was so sore from Monday. We learned for does or overhead weight presses and push presses. I managed 40 lbs up, which I was proud of. As the workout progressed, my soreness lessened some, which was great. We then did metabolic conditioning. We had to do "wall balls", which essentially is throwing a padded medicine ball 10 feet up against a wall from squat position. Since I was so sore, my squats were not very deep. We had to do 200 of these working with a partner, and I did mine with a 10 lb ball. It took us 13:50, after which we collapsed. The endorphins were a great feeling.

I didn't lose much weight this week, but I feel much better. Even though CrossFit is a lot of hard work, I think it's definitely going to be worth it.

Beginning weight (3/2011): 257 lbs
Last week's weight: 229.1 lbs
This week's weight: 228.8 lbs
Weight lost this week: -.3 lbs
Total weight lost: -28.2 lbs

Have a good week everyone!

Weekly Recap and Paleo Update

Saturday, August 18, 2012

This week wasn't as focused as I'd wanted. I had to travel up to Seattle for a few days for work, which threw a wrench into my normal routine. Fortunately, I managed to eat fairly well during the week with a "treat" meal early in the week. I didn't get as much exercise as last week. That will all change this upcoming week with the beginning of Crossfit classes.

Paleo eating is going well. I'm going to begin tracking my food intake again, but it's nice to not be obsessed with every calorie I am putting in my mouth. Instead, I fill up on fulfilling veggies, grass fed beef, and eggs. Fruit is a welcomed treat. I could get used to this for sure..

Here are this week's results:

Beginning weight (3/2011): 257 lbs
Last week's weight: 230.4 lbs
This week's weight: 229.1 lbs
Weight lost this week: -1.3 lbs
Total weight lost: -27.9 lbs

I'm excited and nervous about my first Crossfit class. It's a jump start class series that meets twice a week for 4 weeks. Essentially, we learn form and structure of typical Crossfit workouts. It's a beginner class, and I shouldn't be nervous, but I am. I can only improve as I move forward, so I'm excited to see where I'll be a few months from now.

Everyone have a good weekend and upcoming Spark week!!
