Manhattan Apartment Make-over

Friday, October 02, 2009

I mentioned last week that I would be making a quick trip to NYC to see my brother. Me, my DH, my Sister and Brother in Law all flew to JFK taking the red eye last Thursday night and arriving in the City at 6:30am Fri. We were going to do an "Extreme Make-over" on my brothers apartment. He lives on W. 57th in a 3rd floor walk up and has been there for 7 years. He is a hair and make-up artist and has worked on many Broadway shows, American Idol, Ugly Betty, Today Show, etc... so he is successful in his own right. After I visited him in August, I came home worried about him as he seemed pretty depressed and without energy... and he is 17 years younger than me! When I had seen him last year he was buff and in great shape. Anyway, when I was there in August he mentioned he was taking anti anxiety meds as his work was making him crazy. The work hours, the "divas" he worked with and more seemed to really be a problem. When I came home I discussed the situation with my DH and Sister. There isn't much I could do for him but I felt something needed to be done. One thing I can do is decorate ~ I told them I would like to go back to NYC and paint and fix up the apartment. I know having nice surroundings can really improve your outlook and he needed something fresh to get him kick started. He had uncomfortable furniture, bad lighting, no table/chairs, no microwave, and he ordered out for all his meals. Everyone agreed to be involved so we put together a plan and made it happen spending 3 1/2 days on site. My DH built bookcases for the bedroom and closet, installed fan lights in the living and bedroom, installed a new mirrored medicine cabinet, towel bars and racks and a new bathroom light fixture. He also hung mirrors on the living walls to capture more natural light from the windows, hung pictures and installed overcabinet lights for evening "mood". We took a small table he had in the hall and used for storage and retro-fitted it for an elevated kitchen table where he could eat and work next to the window. My sister and I shopped and bought new dishes, towels, chairs, bedding, pillows, etc and a gorgeous leather recliner. I organized the cabinets and cleaned cleaned cleaned. My Sister and BIL painted. We had NO time for sightseeing and worked the entire time. The end result more than met my expectations. I really think we were a great team and were meant to be there. My brother had been to the Dr for a complete physical last week as he was so run down and it wasn't getting any better. He was called in while we were there to discuss results with the Dr. The results answered a lot of my observations. He was devasted to find out he is HIV positive.... so we were so thankful we were there for him when he got that news. The Dr. indicated that there is medicine and treatment available so we are all hopeful that he will improve and re-gain his health. We all came home knowing that we had done the best we could and were thankful we went. Here are a few photos I can share from the make-over.

Wow. If only every family had a "team" like yours! How great you did that for him, but I am sorry to hear about his diagnosis... he will definately want to destress, because with any illness, stress makes it so much worse... you have taken the first step to try to help make him relax... Great job.

Dont forget to take care of you too!

Wow. You offered a labor of love and indeed you were meant to be there when he really needed you. My thoughts go out to you and your brother.

1000 Action Steps ~ 9/24/09 ~ Heading to NYC

Thursday, September 24, 2009

Finished up packing for a quick trip to NYC. Going to visit my brother along with my husband, sister and her husband. We are planning on doing an "extreme make-over". My brother has lived in a 3rd floor Manhattan walk-up for 7 years. When I visited last month, he seemed pretty down. After I got home I gave some thought to his situation and decided I wanted to do something for him that he wouldn't otherwise do.... so talked my sister into helping and we are going to paint and decorate his place. We are taking the red eye tonight leaving at 10:30pm (West Coast) and arriving 6:30am tomorrow (East Coast). We then have Fri, Sat, Sun to do the work and fly back home Mon. afternoon. I'll blog about how this turns out next week. In the meantime, I'll probably not get many action steps accomplished... but did make a little progress today.

78. Walk (3 mile Leslie Sansone DVD & 2 mile walk to the bank)
79. Page in strength training book (Machine Pull-downs ~ triceps)
80. List a few items on eBay (done... only 2 but something)
81. Finish packing for trip to NYC (done)

1000 Action Steps - 9/23/09 ~ A Little Grandma Time

Wednesday, September 23, 2009

Worked today on a few projects and got in a 5 mile ocean walk before lunch. Got a call from the DH that we had a house showing while I was walking so fortunately the house was in okay shape. I plan to vacuum tomorrow so floors were so so. This is only the second showing since we listed our house two months ago. The market is still very soft here especially for upper end homes. Afterwards, I made a spinach quiche for lunch... let's just say it was too spinachy... I didn't care for it. I asked my DH after lunch if he would want to eat it again and he said "not particularly". I would have said NO so he was being politically correct. I went ahead and dumped the remainder which would have been enough for our dinner... but .... it wasn't worth it to be miserable about it. Oh well... a few flops are inevitable.

Watched Peyton this afternoon. I was thinking we would walk to the park but the weather cooled off considerably so we stayed home. We put together a Halloween puzzle and played a little Wii. It has been fun watching Peyton on Wednesdays after school (she's in 1st grade) and nice to have a little Grandma time with her.

Did okay with my action steps today ~
72. Use at least one item from freezer (spinach, waffle)
73. Walk (5 mile ocean circuit)
74. Photograph and list a few items on eBay (photographed 2 boxed of ornies)
75. Read page in strength training book (going to do it... honest)
76. Make Spinach Feta Quiche (Done ~ but didn't work for me)
77. Go to Park with granddaughter (Stayed home and played with Wii)

I like the action steps you are taking and recording. It gets you doing stuff instead of just thinking about it. I am going to do the freezer thing too as they are all stuffed full of food and it needs to be used.
Just going to buy dairy and fresh veggies and fruit for the most part.
A real money saver using what one already has.

You are on a mission and I like that.

1000 Action Steps - 9/22/09 ~ Lunch out with a friend and my daughter

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

Another BEAUTIFUL day here on the North Oregon Coast. I didn't have a lot of time on my hands however to spend outside. Did 20 minutes on the elliptical this morning then after breakfast I worked on getting eBay items listed. I worked on it yesterday but the TurboLister software wouldn't work right. Didn't know if it had something to do with the virus purge from last week, but fortunately today it loaded and worked fine... problem must have been on the other end (whew!). Finished up a few chores and then went to lunch with my daughter and a friend from where I used to work. We went to my sister's restaurant in Astoria and it was packed. There were 2 cruise ships in town today so people everywhere. At least they had great weather to enjoy. In the afternoon I continued working on eBay stuff and also did a 5 mile walk with the Leslie Sansone DVD. Feeling good about the day.

64. Use at least one item from freezer (Done ~ Waffle, Hot Dog, Onion Soup)
65. Walk (Done ~ 5 mile Leslie Sansone DVD)
66. Read page in strength training book (Done ~ Wrist Curls / Reverse Curls)
67. Lunch with friend (Done ~ Nice outing)
68. Shred one box (Done ~ Dropped off at bank)
69. Packages prepared / to post office (Done ~ Thanks to SOTHISISMYLIFE)
70. Deliver gift (Done ~ Again thanks to my dear daugther (SOTHISISMYLIFE)
71. Get a few items listed on eBay (Done ~ Lots more to do with this project)

If you are interested in checking out the items I have for sale on eBay, here is a link.

Happy 1st day of Fall everyone... hard to believe Summer is already over and days are getting shorter. Boo Hoo!
