I know it has been awhile since....

Saturday, April 17, 2010

I know it has been awhile since I have posted a blog.... not exactly sure what the heck has been keeping me so busy LOL. I have been cutting down on my spark time and have been having fun reading books and whatnot on my new iPad. That is one fun gadget by the way. Doesn't replace my mini netbook but it does do lots of cool things and talk about fast. The pages, books and applications load like greased lightning!

I know some of you are probably curious about how things have been going with my brother in NYC. He is doing well and the HIV is now almost undetectable. The doctor is pretty much amazed how well he has bounced back. He has cleaned up his lifestyle (no drugs or alcohol) and he is slowly but surely regaining his emotional and physical strength. I am so proud of him and thank you all for the support which has helped me help him. He is so talented and has a great future... I sure don't want to see that wasted. The agency that is now representing him has updated their website with his information so if you would like to take a look I am posting the link. Click on Joel Mendenhall and you will see a link to his celebrity and hair/make-up portfolios. Enjoy!

Have a wonderful week-end and Spark on!

Oh Rhonda! I got an iPad too! I thought it would be the perfect solution for when I have to travel. And you're right - it is super fast!

So glad to hear that your brother is doing well. It's such a wonderful thing when talent is NOT wasted! :-) (Like *your* special talent for motivating others to reach their goals and live up to their potential!)

So nice to see you sparking, but understand the need to back away sometimes and focus on other things. I'm so happy all is going so well with your brother. You've been in my thoughts, hoping things were progressing for the positive... You're such a positive force yourself and I'm glad to have crossed paths with you here!

Ohhh my aching Abs!

Sunday, March 28, 2010

So Friday I went to my morning Circuit Spin class as usual... and Michelle (aka the "she devil") had a whole new torture plan mapped out. In the circuit spin, we bike for 15 minutes followed by 5 minutes of strength exercise and we do that circuit 3 times. The strength this week was crunches and planks using a balance ball. Using the ball targets a different angle than doing crunches or planks on the floor. I was a little sore on Saturday but this morning I really felt it when I was getting out of bed. I would say she definately found some new muscles to challenge!

By the way, earlier this year I mentioned that one of my goals was to be able to do 100 push-ups by the end of the year. I started out being able to do four. Thought I would give you an update... I'm up to 14 (barely) so making some progress. The sad news however is I still haven't lost a pound... arrrgghh! Since I'm not willing to give up my nightly Healthy Choice ice cream bar I may be stuck.

Hope you are all having a great week-end. Thanks for stopping by and hugs to you all, Rhonda

Fantastic that you are doing so well on your exercising. I do SO great on my eating...but exercise...ughhhhg..I feel blessed to get in my 10,000 steps, and my 15 minutes of Coach Nicole's Fit N Firm...maybe when the markets slow down...I'll be able to squeeze in more...in the meantime I live vicariously through your exercise blogs...keep em coming! emoticon

Isn't it amazing how changing things up makes us discover muscles we never knew existed? ;)

Isn't it great to know that your body is firming up? Even if the 'she-devil' is tormenting you!

One thing I have to say about you ... you are persistent! If it's possible to get there .. . you will!

You have got to be proud of yourself regarding the pushups. I will bet that you will hit 100 by the end of the year.

Hang in there!

Sounds like an amazing class! Switching it up like that, you'll lose soon. It seems like you may just be building muscle, and I've no doubt you're burning off that ice cream bar, and then some!

Keep it up with the push-ups. That's a goal I'll add soon--may even just 20 or 30. Baby steps!

What Are You Hungry For? Hint ~ It's Not Food!

Friday, March 19, 2010

I had an e-mail this morning come through with "What Are You Hungry For? Hint ~ It's Not Food! I opened the e-mail and saw that Oprah has selected a new book for her book club by author Geneen Roth titled "Women, Food and God". In our society, we have been conditioned to eat for sooooo many more reasons than just being hungry. We eat when we socialize with people, we eat to "treat" ourselves... much like our mother gave us a cookie when we were "good". We might eat from boredom, loneliness, stress, anger, or from triggers like seeing favorite snacks when watching commercials.... etc etc. I definately plan on getting this book. Here is a link if you want to read more. www.oprah.com/health/Geneen-Roth-Tal

Thank you for the heads up on this one. Before purchasing it, I am going to see if it has been acquired by the local library. I have known for a long time I don't eat just because I am hungry, drat it all. Have a great week.

Geneen Roth is amazing. I happened to be skimming through Oprah's magazine at the salon this week and read that same article--very powerful stuff. I've read other books she's written, and I am definitely going to read this one. Let me know what you think when you do!

Chit Chat versus Conversations with Substance

Tuesday, March 09, 2010

I read an article the other day and have been mulling it over in my mind. It talked about how relationships are stronger when you have meaningful conversation versus just chit chat. This really does make sense and I think it is the number one most important thing in a marriage in particular. In our society, we have a lot of "hello, how are you... yadda yadda" and it is really just a greeting. When you have a real conversation about things that are happening in your life... or things you are thinking about, then you make a meaningful connection. I think this is why our Spark Friends really are relationships that we cherish. I know I certainly cherish each of you. We do more than chit chat. We share hopes, dreams, concerns, thoughts and things that can be very personal. Now we have the satisfaction of knowing this is good for us and for our mental health! Hugs to you all and have a great week, Rhonda

I agree. At Spark we can really form friendships. I am finding that now I need to go back and reconnect with friends nearby even though I am realizing some of my hopes and dreams I can't really share with them, it means they think they have to change. I don't see it that way but unfortunately some of them feel that way. So, I say, easy goes it and as I change, they can go with the new me or not. I am optimistic and feel most of them will. The ones that wouldn't, I have already gracefully made my exit from them.

Soooooo awesome that you shared this blog! You hit the nail squarely on the HEAD! My fleshie friends are very important to me...but even though I've known some of them for 20+ years I don't connect with them in the same way that I do with my Spark sistas! Seriously! I don't know exactly why this is but I've noticed that when I really want TRUE advise..or even someone who TRULY hears me...I always head to SparkPeople..and your page of course..is one of the FIRST one's that I hit! Hugs, hugs and MORE hugs! I wonder if we lived closer and saw each other daily if things would be the same...hey...lets try it and find out!!! Want to come to Florida!?! I've always loved your neck of the woods too...but I know I'd sadly miss the sunshine...I'm a SUNSHINE cravin' kind of gal! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Indeed it is--I read something similar recently on SP, and took away the concept of "being more present", whatever the activity. The sincerity of that shines through in everything, and I definitely find that here--thank you to the amazing SP community!

Grace and Glorie

Monday, March 08, 2010

Have you guys ever heard or been to the play "Grace and Glorie"? If not, I HIGHLY recommend that you see it if you have an opportunity. I saw this play last Spring and was thinking about it just this morning ~ how is that for staying power? It is a story that centers on an old lady (Grace) who is dying and visited by a hospice volunteer (Gloria ~ but Grace calls her Glorie). That sounds like a really dreary and depressing storyline, but the odd couple characters add real humor and meaning to the situation. Gloria is there to help Grace, but she is the one who ends up being helped. I think the reason the play has really stuck with me is that Grace wasn't anyone famous and she didn't live a life full of excitement... but she still found meaning and purpose. She knew she was important and compares herself to one little stich in a crocheted blanket. If one stich is missing and doesn't hold up the stiches surrounding it, the whole piece is ruined and will fall apart. Her wit and wisdom will leave you feeling uplifted. Look for it and Enjoy! Have a great week spark friends. Hugs, Rhonda

Sounds sooooo intriguing...I'll have to look for it! It's true..we don't have to be anyone extraordinary to be meaningful...we only have to share our love and light with those around us..and that in itself makes us extra~ordinary! Hugs dear friend...you are certainly extraordinary to me!!! How's your brother doing? I pray for him often! emoticon
