Self-Honesty ~ Day 2

Self-Honesty check ~ Wednesday ~ I had already pre-logged my foods into the Spark tracker Tuesday night so that wasn’t much of a concern for yesterday. It was nice having that out of the way! After the kids were off to school I had my breakfast ~

I had 1 cup orange juice, ½ grapefruit, 2 poached eggs & whole wheat thin bagel with cream cheese. As I was taking this picture, it got me thinking. What a pale colored meal? This breakfast was filling & tasty, but lacked pizzazz. My plate needs more color! Why not track my food colors for the day?

After my workouts of level 2; DAY 10 of the 30-Day Shred & treadmill (45 mins ~3.08 miles), I was in need of a high protein snack before I continued on with my day!

I enjoyed a banana sliced & topped with 1 T. peanut butter & 1 cup ½ percent milk
That snack tied me over into lunch time when I sat down to enjoy

1 cup high fiber Minestrone soup by Progresso, reduced-fat Triscuits with 1 wedge of Laughing Cow French Onion spread, 1 cup strawberries & ice water. I also had a ½ cup of left over steamed green beans that I added for some more veggies.

During the afternoon I worked on spring cleaning the bathrooms. I once again, fell behind so the 3rd bathroom/laundry room didn’t get done today. I was getting hungry for my afternoon snack.

110 calorie yogurt ~ Pineapple Upside Down Cake yogurt with 1 cup fresh pineapple! Delicious. I highly recommend that snack.

I had a low-fat hot dog, reduced fat crescent roll, baked French fries (my opinion the best way to have them), a side salad (look at the color there) & 1 T. light ranch dressing, plus a ½ cup of blueberries from the freezer. Very yummy. I was still starving (calories are still off) so I had another (not pictured) crescent roll without a hot dog. Plus 5 tater tots ~ just being honest!

We had a quick & kid friendly dinner since our night consisted of coloring Easter eggs. The girls had fun decorating the eggs & I even got to decorate one too. I love coloring eggs.

Okay, for my allowed sweet snack I had my Easter candy weakness ~ Cadbury mini-eggs. It is the darn TOM & if I don’t have some form of chocolate a day I may go crazy. emoticon

So did I reach my goal of having a food from each color?
Red- strawberries, tomatoes
Orange- carrot (shredded in salad mix)
Yellow- grapefruit, banana, pineapple
Green- green beans, salad
Blue- blueberries
Purple- red cabbage (shredded in salad mix)
Black- coffee (with added creamer of course)
Brown- whole wheat thin bagel, peanut butter
White- eggs, milk, low-fat cream cheese

I really need to get my ranges in order to meet with my calorie burn. I shouldn’t be going to bed & getting up in the morning “starving” after being over calories. Not that “sure I could eat something” type of starving. It’s the actual "my stomach is really growling & I am starving" kind of starving.

Any suggestions?

    Hi Sweetie!! I loved this blog...meals looked so yummy. I get in the habit of eating the same things day after day. At least it makes meal time easy...just go get what I had yesterday. LOL I know you enjoyed coloring the Easter eggs with your girls. Having 2 teen-age boys, they don't like doing things like that but it sure brings back memories.

I'd love to hear about that 30-day shred. Where can I find out how to do that? I need to shake up my work outs a bit.

    OK, just being nosy b/c I love photo blogs! I agree with the other suggestions about blood sugar. I would watch the packaged goods, like crackers, crescent rolls and frozen fries. Probably easier said than done when you have kids, but I find that my blood sugar is much better controlled when I eat whole grain carbs, like brown rice, kasha, barley and wheat berries.

    Kelleeh is right, it's probably blood sugar. Your colour is good, but to really regulate your appetite levels you could tweak some of your grain and starch carbs a bit, and avoid some sugars.

The pineapple treat looks tasty, but pineapple and most non-citrus tropical fruits are extra-high in fruit sugars that will spike your insulin and make you more hungry in the long run. Berries are a better choice, like the strawberries you had for lunch. Or citrus like the grapefruit! Also, if the yogurt had added sugar you could look for an unsweetened alternative. Sugar is one of the worst culprits for making you feel hungry down the road!

The white croissant and baked potatos are also easy-to-metabolize and will spike your insulin levels. The whole-wheat bagel you chose in the morning is a better choice becasue it's a complex starch that will "feed" more blood sugar slowly over time and leave you feeling satisfied for longer. Whole grain food also has more nutrients and fibre - yay!

Also I noticed that you had a much higher proportion of fruits to vegetables. If you work on balancing that out you'll have lower carbs and calories and a wider variety of nutrients, and you'll probably feel fuller for longer.

Since I'm already being a COMPLETE busybody, I'll finish with a chocolate makeover suggestion: switch from candy-coated, high-sugar chocolate treats to a smaller, more concentrated portion of 70% dark chocolate. One or two pieces have all the taste and lovely endorphins of chocolate, but with lower sugar, fat and calories.You can get 80, 90 or even 99% dark chocolate but it starts to get bitter at that level!

You're already doing great and making a lot of great (and colourful) choices! Just some tweaking suggestions to go a bit further. :)

    COOL! I'm so happy to see your food pics! I was really curious where you get all your fiber from as that is where I struggle the most. I love how you tracked all the colors. Your food looks yummy. And a hot dog with crescent roll has historically been one of my favorite meals (we used to add a slice of cheddar cheese), but I haven't had one in a long time.

As far as waking up starving even though I ate the plenty the previous day... I find when that happens to me, it's a blood sugar issue. Meaning my blood sugar was too high at the end of the day, and it crashes overnight. You may want to consider having your last snack of the day be more balanced with carbs, fat, and protein, instead of mostly a carb snack. For example, you could swap your morning and evening snack, and have a banana, peanut butter, and milk before bed, and have your chocolate some other time during the day. Just my two cents!

Anyway, thanks for posting this! I love to see how other people eat!

Self-Honesty ~ Day 1

Thanks to a SparkFriend JOAN_HEO for pointing out that a person needs to have some “self-honesty” to make this journey successful. As many of my SparkFriends know, I am struggling with the scale lately. Why not give myself a little self-honesty check and get that number moving again? Mom always said “honesty is the best policy”, so why not with myself? Hmmm. Something to think about there. How can I tell my own girls that honesty is the best policy, if I’m not being honest with myself? So this brings me to my self-honesty day 1 blog….

Today started off as any other day. I got the kids around & off to school, the normal morning chaos. I was going to be a good little Sparker & get in my level 2;day 9 of the Shred in before I went swimming. If I am being honest, I kind of talked myself out of it. By the time I was finished sparking this morning, I was running behind. The story of my life. So instead of feeling rushed & panicked during the workout, I got my lunch-to-go & snacks ready for my day out.

After swimming I ate my healthy lunch in the car & even got in 30 minutes of reading time. Being a mom of two that is a miracle all on its own! Then I headed off for my afternoon of “me time”. emoticon for a challenge this week on team Challenges for Sparkers with Lots to Lose.

It was pouring rain, but I enjoyed my day. I shopped where I wanted to shop, I had time to try on clothes & I even stayed out of the girls’ department. I always end up finding things for my daughters & never look for me. Not today ~ it was all about me!

I bought 2 pairs of capris ~ one pair is a casual white pair & the other is a dressy pair of black ones. I also hit Michael’s up to get one of their Paula Dean recipe books they had. I have so many recipes I use all of the time I didn’t want them all in a recipe box so I thought this would be a nice binder to organize my recipes in. After that, I fueled back up with my granola bars & fresh sliced strawberries. Then I was off to Target. By the time I got in the store my pants were a touch wet & I was freezing. It was so cold, windy & rainy! Brrr. Doesn’t help I really had to go to the bathroom! Potty dance=extra calorie burn!

I felt re-energized when I got in there. It’s a good thing I don’t go shopping every day ~ cha ching $$$$. I got a new pair of workout capris (charcoal colored), a green night shirt to go with my pj bottoms that fit me better now, a new t-shirt (dark plum), a new workout t-shirt (rosy pink), another workout t-shirt (purple), a black dressy cardigan & two pairs of shoes ~ a pair of casual flip-flops & a pair of dressy black sandals. Had I had painted toes, my feet would have looked much better in the dressy sandal. Future note ~ paint my nails before wearing in public!

I had so much fun shopping I was running behind, again! I got home just minutes before the kids got off of the bus. My oldest dd loves my new sandals. I guess they must be okay to wear then!

I had a super day of “me time” and boy, did I need it. While the shrimp was marinating for dinner I managed to get in my 30 Day Shred; Level 2 ~ day 9! Only one day left of level 2! Ya`hooo!

    Oh my gosh - i loved this blog!!! Good for you with honesty emoticon. It was an emoticon read and you burned a lot more calories than that for having to carry your loot around and back to your car emoticon. emoticon for taking care of you (I love all the stuff your bought!!).

Hello Sparkers!

I am feeling on top of the emoticon right now. I have been training for the SparkPeople Virtual 5k Your Way Running Program for several weeks now. I am proud to say, after all the health set backs with my daughter or myself, our loss of Grandma & life in general I have finally completed the 5k Run. Drum roll please..... emoticon (Okay, music notes is the closest thing I could find LOL)

Finishing 3.11 miles in 36.12 minutes! emoticon
(Seven minutes better than my first 5k run last May)

I started off with a side cramp & after a couple of minutes it went away. I kept having that stupid self-doubt emoticon kick in that there was no way I could finish it. I wanted to cry. Seriously, I thought about it. Then the other side of my brain emoticon thought that would take too much energy. Just focus on the run & see how far you can go, walk if you need to. Before I knew it I was coming up to the half way point ~ no stops yet. I looked at my watch ~ 18.00 minutes on the dot. WHAT? NO Way! So I yelled to my dh who was beside me on the bike & he encouraged me on with that being a good time. I thought to myself emoticon YOU CAN SO DO THIS! You are now over half way done. Keep on moving.

I quit focusing on the upcoming hill or the lovely ones to follow (very hilly loop path I walk and run). I just focused on the next foot or two ahead of me. I paid no attention to the upcoming hills. The next thing I knew I was on the back side of them, how the heck did I do that?

Then I came to the last leg of my run probably the last half mile or 3/4 mile and I switched up my iTouch tunes emoticon & listened to the good old song by Survivor oh yeah, a little ~ Eye of the Tiger emoticon ~ to bring me home!

I feel emoticon and the sense of accomplishing the training & run is a emoticon feeling too!

Run 35 minutes, really?

Yup & I did it!

I hadn't been on the treadmill training for over a week now. With my allergies/sinus/chest congestion I bypassed the treadmill running since I was winded just going up steps & my chest/lungs were killing me.

Well I got home from our brief weekend away & got in my day 3 of the Shred. I felt so energized & ready to take on the treadmill. So I hopped on & did a 5 minute warm-up & planned to run for as long as I could. Since I am behind on my SP virtual 5k training & need to work on week 4 this week I thought I'd just see where I was & how long I could go.

To my surprise I kept trucking along & soon I was at 20 minutes, then 25, moving on to 30 & before I knew it I was at 35 minutes. Boy, didn't that feel great! I did it! I ran on that darn treadmill for 35 minutes straight. Go me!

I look forward to doing it tomorrow too. I know now that I can do it!!! Tomorrow starts my official week 4 training. Which means, if all goes well I will finish training & will do my SparkPeople Virtual 5k run next week! Woo-hoo!!! Wish me luck! emoticon

    You must be out running!!! When I had a bad cold a few weeks ago I felt so much better after I ran...the cold went mostly away after that. I don't know why but I'm not asking questions! I just like it ... a LOT!

    Isn't it amazing how we can just get into a zone and not notice the time flying by? I felt that way on the bike today. Didn't really notice physical issues until I was 75% done!

April goals

…continuing to move forward one step at a time!

Welcome April 2011! I am looking forward to a month of warmish weather, sunshine, the occasional rain/thundershower and spring flowers in bloom. It has been a long winter here and I am ready for spring and all that it has to offer. I am going to do my part & make it a spectacular one. I’m also hoping for a more productive month than March. Here is what I have planned for my April.


emoticon Continue on my ‘New Journey’ to get rid of these last 6 pounds so I can see my first big goal of 160 (that will be 33 pounds GONE!) Shout out ~ Thanks to my new SparkFriend THEHONESTME for the push on this one! emoticon

emoticon Begin & finish (round 2) the Jillian Michaels’ 30 Day Shred (with before & after pictures as I progress along) Shout out to my Sparkers ~ Thanks to JAMIECRADER & RICEANDBEANS for the encouragement & idea to get going on this again! Let’s Shred it, Girlies!! Swimsuit season here we come! emoticon emoticon

emoticon Finish my SparkPeople Virtual 5k training & Run ~ scheduled 5k for the week of April 10th! I may fall a little short on this as the scheduled week is getting closer, but I am determined to do it! Better late, than never, right? emoticon emoticon
