Loose Skin-What to do?

Wednesday, January 23, 2013

As I am losing weight, I have lots of loose skin. I will admit that although I have got the healthy eating down, I lack on the exercise and am starting to make positive changes with that. I have questions for those who have lost a substancial amount of weight. Did exercising make a big difference in helping the loose skin? I am thinking that as you develop muscles, it would make the loose skin look better. I know there is cosmetic surgery that some people get to help that but I doubt I would ever be able to afford that. I would like to hear from those who are dealing with the excess skin after losing weight and if there is some advice you can give me that might help me with minimizing the loose skin or at least making it look a little better. Also, if you had the cosmetic surgery, are you glad that you had it done?

Thanks!

Pat

I lost 150 between April 2010 and June 2012. I have loose skin in my tummy, arms, and upper legs. My doctors have all told me to live ith it or have surgery. At 66, there is no way we could afford for me to have the surgery, so I'll live with it. I just started belly dancing this past week and I'm hoping it will help that flab onthe tummy disappear.

I have loose skin on my upper arms and my neck especially. Most of my stomach loose skin has gone. I told my doctor "Look at my arms" What can I do with this loose skin. He said either live with it or have it cut off and said just think that used to be filled with fat so I guess I'd rather have loose skin than fat. I am 83 so guess I'll live with it.

Yes! I reached goal almost a year ago after losing nearly 100 pounds (I've also lost and regained hundreds of pounds over the course of my life!) and I've seen a big difference with my loose skin in the past year with consistent exercise, especially strength training, drinking lots of water and moisturizing. It's not perfect and I still have quite a bit on my stomach but it's a vast improvement and I finally feel comfortable wearing sleeveless shirts again because my arms in particular have toned up nicely.

I am the same as you. I can keep my eating in check, but not real crazy about the exercise part, though I am working on it.

I have heard that exercise, especially ST does help with that. I have also heard to lose slowly. I have also heard to give it time. I have lost about 65 so far. I am maybe half way there. I am a bit concerned about my mid section but for now, I will keep on keeping on.

Best of luck to you on your journey!

No surgery for me! The tummy skin was nasty after I lost 100 lbs., but slowly it has been shrinking, as i keep exercising and have held steady for 18 months. Even at my age, skin retains some elasticity, bu.t it takes time and patience.

Look at my before and after pictures. The only thing I had tucked was my tummy. I've lost 241 pounds and they removed 24 pounds there. Exercising and moisturizing really work! Drink lots of water and lose slowly.

Spark Coach?

Monday, January 21, 2013

Is there anyone that can tell me about Spark Coach? I watched the short video clip but would like to hear from some of you that are using it. What program are you on and how much has it helped you? I cannot afford to do it now but when I start my job and get caught up financially, I am thinking about doing it. Thanks for any input about this.

Have a blessed day!

I gave it the 14 day trial. I thought it was good, but took too much time. I knew I wouldn't be able to keep up with it and work full time. I can put that membership money to good use elsewhere, like on the fitness tools I'm buying for my office. emoticon emoticon emoticon

You can try it free for 7 days. I tried it, but I didn't really think it was worth the money after my trial. The videos were really helpful, and I liked having a plan laid out for me. I only work around 10-15 hours per week because of school, so I couldn't really afford it.

Are You Ready? Ready, Set, Go!!!!!

Sunday, January 20, 2013

I have been an expert yo-yo dieter off and on throughout most of my life but this time is different because I am NOT on a diet until I get to my goal weight! I have a totally different mindset this time and it is NOT a diet but a LIFESTYLE! Maybe that sounds cliche but for me...it is a fact! Weight loss AND maintenance is about a MINDSET. How do we view food? Do we look to food to comfort us? Why do we eat the way we do? Was food used as a reward? Was food used to make us feel good? Go back to your earliest memories of eating and see what habits you learned and what feelings and thoughts were associated with foods and eating.
I remember my mom putting brown sugar and cherries on my grapefruit. I guess that she did that because she does not like the sour taste of grapefruit and that is the way she likes it and thought that was the only way I would eat it so growing up, I did not REALLY know what grapefruit tasted like. I do now and I love it just the way it is with nothing on it! I was very obese during most of my childhood and into adolescence and did not lose the weight until I was 17 and started eating the way I wanted to eat. I kept it off a few years but after I got married, I started cooking the kinds of food that my husband liked and we BOTH packed on the weight.
We all probably can look back now and see mistakes that we made and habits that were formed in us that we wish we had done differently. The good news is that we are here NOW and we can make positive changes! To do that, new healthy habits need to be formed and we need to change the way that we view and think about food.
I posted the pic above because maybe many of us can or could relate to that at some point in our lives.
To anyone reading this, I hope that you are ready and that you are committed to living a healthy life!

I was raised on classic southern cooking. The redeeming factor is that there were veggies on the table all the time. Mom sliced a tomato and cucumber nearly every day. She made most desserts from scratch. We had to eat every bite on our plate at every meal as my parents came from post depression homes. I still hate to see food wasted at the table.

Having a man in the house is a great way to gain weight as you enjoy cooking and eating together. I've seen so many young couples balloon, myself included.

My grandmother used the pink grapefruit which is very slightly sweeter tasting than the white. For years that was my breakfast, since it was something I could get down without getting a crampy tummy.

Now I am not supposed to eat grapefruit because it interferes with some of my medications.

Need Prayers

Friday, January 18, 2013

Hi everyone!

I lost another 1.8 lbs since yesterday. I am very happy about that and wish I could lose that much EVERY day! I know that is unrealistic though but I am just happy that the weight is going down.

As I posted about before, I have been out of work for over 3 years. In that time, I went back to college on a special grant and got my BS degree in Psychology and a certificate in Victim Advocacy. I graduated in May and have been looking for a job. I got one and it requires a level 2 background check. I went 10 days ago to get my fingerprints done electronically at the Sheriff's Department. Today I got word that the FBI said they could not read them and I needed to get them done again. emoticon So, back to the Sheriff's Dept I went AGAIN!! Now starting my job will be delayed even MORE! I was told that from the time that they get the new fingerprint card in the mail, it will take at least 10 BUSINESS days. I would REALLY appreciate prayers that this goes through quicker because I NEED income to pay bills!

I hope that everyone is doing well and that you have an awesome weekend!
