Fight or Flight

I'm not a person who gets sick often, so when I do I am always stunned with how defeated it makes me feel. I find I often can't just stop and rest up, and I try to defy the illness and push past it, which is typically a big mistake.

Are you a person who fights and pushes too far in denial of illness, or are you one to just fly along with it, admitting defeat and just quietly wait for everything to run it's course?

I am usually a fighter. I will push through, work through, act naturally. But this time around I had no focus and no choice. I found that I was having trouble doing the simplest of tasks. My thinking was not clear. I was absolutely exhausted. As I walked from one room to another, I could hear my heart beat in my head, and it was way faster than it should be--a message, I'm sure. So I rested.

Today I feel blah . . . but my focus is much better. I'm going to take it easy and rest up more today and hopefully by the workweek I will be 100%. Unfortunately, no exercising getting done here. But thankfully, not much eating is getting done either. It's a good balance.

My Fitbit Agrees

I had the following message from Fitbit in my e-mail:

"For a big change in the new year, think small. Resolutions get broken, but daily and weekly habits stick."

I've been talking about making new habits, and I'm happy that Fitbit agrees. Over the next couple of weeks I will be making and instilling new habits, one at a time. Some will come easier than others, as some just need to be renewed. I've decided to hit some of the "renewals" first.

Habit #1 - Water

No explanation required. Drink more . . . drink enough . . . drink often . . . DAILY!

I have been loving the reminders coming to my calendar from 30 Days of Fit Food. Today's little reminder was awesome . . .



I am one of those people who cannot sit idly by and wait for healthy habits to come along to me. Knowing that is a blessing. Admitting that is never easy. Living that day to day is hard work for me . . . maybe not for others.

Today's challenge was to track your food BEFORE you eat. So as I write this, I am about to track some food and hopefully stick to the plan.

2014 Habit Reinforcement

December 27th . . . the time when people begin to think about New Year's Resolutions. I have no interest in resolutions, as they are short-lived. In the past I have set goals for myself, and often times, goals can be short-lived too.

So I have begun to think about what I could do differently this year. I've read and analyzed some books in the past. I've written letters to myself. Somehow I need to find a way to rekindle my excitement for being healthy. So I got to thinking about the 7 habits of highly successful losers. There is a book out there; I've not read it. But I know the list . . .

1. Do some form of exercise most days of the week.

2. Eat breakfast.

3. Portion control, portion control, portion control!

4. Stick with basic, whole foods.

5. Track your calories and nutrients.

6. Deal with emotional eating issues.

7. Have a support system in place.

So these are the 7 items that I will revisit in 2014. They key will be to make these each a habit. So that is what I will be striving to do come January 1st . . . setting some solid habits one at a time.

    Thank you for posting this. I need to think about some of these things for me. i think it would be helpful for me to have a support system in place. I have never really had that outside of spark but maybe if I have some friends to turn to it might help a bit. Glad you are on my team and looking forward to 2014!!

    emoticon emoticon I gave up on resolutions too - these are good just to do .. I also have marks on my little weekly planner a for art- f for fibers j for journaling ..now adding S for sewing .. I am home on disability but this I need to do to keep sane ,try to do a little daily ..

    All great goals!! SP is a great support system for me and I have a wonderful husband who also helps...even trying to eat healthy along with me! I am sure you can meet your goals!! Best of luck to you!

Hey Girlie603,

I knew we missed a week. But I was busy, and yes, it was work. I know, just an excuse. But I really have been working long hours and dealing with a lot of stress.

It is not the end of the road, and I am still working on goals. In fact, as I told you two weeks ago, I signed on to the Biggest Loser Team again. I just spent the afternoon connecting with all the members, providing info, and I'm really excited.

I will admit that I've been a bit lax on the goals. But I promise you to work smarter on all of them this week, and in fact, I am going to challenge you! Be ready to hear that I took care of all of the below this week, and in response I will expect you to add another measurable goal.

I will

1) spin the Spark wheel daily
2) log your food every day
3) check-in with your Biggest Loser team each day
4) finding ways to relieve some of that stress you've been under
5) focus on water intake this week

You in turn will give me something tangible as #6.

Get ready!
