Well week one of three on the road has shaped up quite nicely. Our daily work routine is incredibly manageable. We're cruising right along with our project (I wanted to get us all to power through the weekends so that we could get done in 2 weeks instead of 3.....I was almost voted off the island for that idea....sheesh!)

I've got a great routine going, got in 2 workouts/day on 3 days this week. Some days I can work out early in the AM, but I've found a better schedule. I like my quick & intense lunchtime keeps me revved up for the afternoon workload we have and I avoid a big meal. Breakfast & lunch consist of large, green smoothies. After work, I get in a more leisurely workout that consists of either ST or more cardio (I alternate days).

It's also been a great opportunity to check out some exercise apps I've been collecting. My current faves are:

- Nike Training Club - the 15 min abs routine is all I do on this's still a bear!

- Six Pack Promise Abs - short, but intense, each workout is different, and it hits ab muscles I never knew I had!

- Stronglifts 5X5 - a very cool weight lifting app. You do 5 sets of 5 lifts. You do 3 exercises a day (say squats, deadlifts, and rows or bench presses, rows, and shoulder presses). The app automatically adds weight each time if you progress or leaves you where you're at.

100 pushups - still the one to beat. I started back on Week 5 day 2 today

So this weekend is pretty free. I'll get in some more workouts and stay on track with the eating. The funny thing with the green smoothies is that I find myself NOT craving the usual dining out types of foods. The other night I went to Outback and had their salmon & veggies along with a cup of french onion soup. Everything from the bread on tasted wicked salty and artificial.....need to do some more study on that one. If anything, my food cravings have been for more fresh & untainted meals. Hmmmmmm......

Well, looks like I'll have plenty of time to study up on that this weekend!

    About the eat out food: since I've been avoiding processed foods, I've noticed the same thing about the artificial and overly salty taste when dining out. The more I eat quality food, the worse the other crap tastes.

    Well, I certainly hope you're craving untainted meals. Eating tainted foods leads to food poisoning which is not something I would wish on too many people (yes, there is a short list). emoticon

I prefer my veggies raw, smoothies just should not be green. That is wrong on too many levels.

    Now you can NOT tell me that you can't find a decent steak in Texas!! Still don't get the green smoothie thing, but this green smoothie movement must be contagious b/c I saw a girl in my office drinking one. Still don't get what's so bad about having a pink or white or even blue smoothie....but HEY! Whatever floats your boat!! Push-ups tonight...5 sets. Better start pumping Smoothie King!

Living the Dream

So there are days when everything just hits on all 8 cylinders and I've just got to sit back and think, "I am just living the dream!"

The plan I concocted yesterday went off like clockwork. Made a pitcher-full of delectable smoothie deliciousness this morning. Drank down 24 ounces of the fruit and green goodness:

Then put the remaining 24 ounces in to my new "Big Bubba" thermo travel mug, which I then brought to the office and to stake its claim on its very own corner of the office fridge:

We worked our asses off all morning, broke for lunch at 11:15, with the promise of returning by 12:30.

Perfect! Grabbed my new, "El Cheapo" travel gym bag out of the car, strolled over to the gym next door, got in 45 minutes of quick cardio and abs, showered, changed, and I was walking back in the office door by 12:25!!


Sipped on the remaining green smoothie goodness in the afternoon. As we powered through the rest of the day's workload, our group actually got fairly far ahead on our project, so we called it quits at 4:30 and yours truly.....went right back to the gym!

Knocked out a nice ST session for legs and shoulders, did me push-ups (sans the perfect push-up apparatus....take note kitty-woman.....they are SO much easier without the perfect-pushup's devilish rotation!), then did a new iPhone abs routine.....6 Pack Promise....definitely worth the download from iTunes....they are short but nicely intense)

Swung by the grocery store on my way back to the room and grabbed some sushi-to-go for dinner and looked back at how swimmingly well this day went

So I've asked myself before, "Self, if you could do anything you wanted with your days, if you had no professional, social, or money concerns, what would your day be like?" Well a little fantasizing aside (
), I'd lead a pretty simple life, but I would strive to exercise regularly and to make it fun, interesting, challenging, etc. I'd try to consciously eat pretty well, not snacking from stress or cravings.

Overall, I'd like to feel free and in control of every moment....and today, I think I was.....that's probably what made it go so well and that's probably as important a goal as anything else as we strive to live healthier and balanced lives.

How much would you pay to lose a few lbs?

So I asked myself today, "Self, how much would you pay to drop 5-10 lbs?"

I answered back, "I don't know, $50 maybe?"

"Then why aren't you doing everything you can to take away all the excuses that will prevent you from living healthy these next 3 weeks on the road!"

Here's how I got to this train of thought:

I'm living out of a hotel room these next 3 weeks. I have about 10 hours of meetings every day. The hotel room is great, it's got a little fridge & kitchenette. There's a hell of a nice gym right by where we work. I've stocked up my fridge with good eats.....what could possibly go wrong?

Well we break for lunch and have 1 hr 15 min every day. Today, I thought for a nano-second, "That's not enough time to workout and get lunch.....maybe I should skip the workout and go eat.


I did a quick Hi Intensity Interval cardio session, came back to my room, knocked out some push-ups, showered, made a quick smoothie, changed and went back to work with 2 minutes to spare.

Now as much as I like to live on the edge, even that was cutting it I got to thinking; how do I take away my future excuses to working out and eating right when I'm time-crunched at lunch these next few weeks?

Well, I'd have to pack a gym bag and bring it with me so I can duck in and out from work, showering at the gym instead of driving back to the hotel room

But I didn't pack a gym bag, so I have to drive back to the room to change

WRONG.....go buy a cheapo gym bag for $10!

Well, I still don't have enough time to come back to the room to eat, so maybe I'll need to go for lunch with everyone to the burger joint or BBQ place up the street.

WRONG....go buy some food containers for a few bucks to pack up your green smoothie concoction and leave it in the meeting room fridge to have when you get back from the gym

So slowly and deliberately, I whittled down those troublesome barricades and excuses, making the case that spending a few $ on these items is not a luxury, not a splurge, but a way of guaranteeing success....hell I spend more than that on a lunch or a dinner out anyway!

I did this in my running days too. I knew that cold weather, rain, snow, darkness, etc would be an easy excuse for me to not go running. So I bought myself some cold weather gear, some wet weather gear, night running gear, and had no excuse to say, "I can't run today because it's too (fill in the blank) outside"

How much would you pay to lose a few more pesky lbs? How much is your time worth? Today, I figured I'd pay a few dollars to make sure I had NO excuse to not workout and stick to my plan.

Deep in the Heart of Texas!

Wouldn't you know that right as I'm about to kick into "Super Workout-Man", I come down with a friggin' headcold that makes me feel absolutely miserable!

I blame my 17-year old!

He came home with the sniffles last week, stayed home from school Thursday, planted a big, wet goodnight kiss on me that night.....and here I am. I think that's how teen-agers really get back at their parents....

It started late Saturday, then Sunday, flying in to San Antonio, I knew I was in trouble.

At first it felt great, climbing out and having the cabin de-pressurize cleared up my sinuses in no time.....but then we hit the descent!

I tried to stay ahead of it, clearing my blocked ears with the old "valsalva manoeuvre", but it was dicey. If you have never blown an eardrum before, take it from me, it is an incredibly painful experience. I blew my left ear out a few years ago (it healed up in about 3 weeks) was like having Joe Pesci drive an icepick into your brain while Robert deNiro batters your head with a phone book!

But I made it in OK, stocked up my man cave in the hotel with good eats, got in a quick workout in the room.....then hit the sack around 8:30!

It was a rough night, then I had to sit through a bunch of meetings all day, and I've got to tell you, I was not a pretty sight! Super Workout-man turned into the Booger-man. I finally caved at lunch, went and bought some decongestant and Tylenol and that's been holding it back.

I can never remember the saying about starve a cold, feed a fever (or is it feed a cold, starve a fever?), but somehow I do believe you can "Burn the Bug", so I hit the gym at the end of the day and revved up on the bike & elliptical to see what would happen.

It worked out pretty good. Didn't do anything too intense, I could tell from my HRM that I was working harder on what are normal settings for me, but once I got the HR up, I felt noticeably better.

I'm big into visualization, especially getting through tough workouts, so today was all about....The Furnace!

I was revved up, getting my core up to volcanic temperatures, burning up all those invading bugs, exhaling out their fried carcasses, sweating out their incinerated remains, watching them writhe in agony as my heart rate went up.....ahhh, just what I needed.

But it was short lived. I sit here typing, still stuffed up, my honker sore from blowing my nose all day, but it could be can always be worse.

On the flip side, I don't have much of an appetite.....had smoothies for breakfast and lunch, then got some scrambled eggs at a diner across the street. Couldn't taste a damn thing, even after covering them with tabasco.

Well that's about it for tonight....but before I go, as your Spark trivia monitor, let me throw out what I heard on the local radio station this AM.....tomorrow is the 176th anniversary of the fall of the Alamo! Remember!

(I should have brought my bike!)

    I love the "Burn the Bug"!! I agree, it might be harder to do a workout when you don't feel well, but it does get rid of the illness faster!

    You can rent a bike at Bike World, in Alamo Heights. If you're gonna stay with the "Big Boy", I highly recommend it.

Busy weekend

Sometimes weekends are busier than the work week....this was such a weekend

SWMBO had a bunch of things on her list that I had been putting off for a while; ceiling hooks for plants, cleaning off the BBQ, moving furniture around for our new "look" (I was comfortable with the old "look", but what the hell do I know). Then we had to go to the post office to get our passports renewed. Our younger boy had his passport issued while he was a minor, so this requires a whole different bureaucratic in person renewal. So while we were at it, SWMBO and I had ours done too.

Hit the gym and knocked out an all around cardio session; bike, rowing machine, situps, pushups, then came home and started up my packing for tomorrow's trip. Being gone for 3 weeks, I'm going to take a few extras, like my blender and my perfect push-ups

All this in the middle of a constant downpour! It's been one of those wet, wet weekends that gives Florida that special look, tons of lightening and thunder, big, fat rolling clouds coming in over the water, and wildlife that really comes alive with the wind and the rain....gotta love it!

    Be glad that at least you don't have the added issue of a remote second parent for the passport issue. Talk about having to jump through hoops to get my daughter's passport! She just turned 18 and the renewal was much easier.

    Ah, passport renewal. One of the few things that makes renewing one's driver's licence seem easy. Which reminds me I have to do mine soon.
