Some More Non-Scale Victories

Now I'm not one to wish time to move quickly, but man am I glad this week is over! I had hardly a moment free and only worked out Monday night and tonight!

This weekend is jam packed too. #2 son and I are marching in a Mardi Gras parade Saturday morning and we have a variety show to go to tomorrow night.

In between I need to swing by the office for a few hours. I was so pissed at some of my folks today that I told them to work all weekend to fix some pretty messed up programs they're responsible for. I'm going in to check on them.

Sunday's the same. I actually told them to show me how they've fixed everything by Sunday afternoon. I work them hard, but I'll share the weekend pain to make sure it's all fixed right.

I hope to fit in some cardio as well. So overall, it's not going to be much of a weekend.

But there's some good news to report. Last night we had our annual banquet and I got out my tux. I haven't worn it in about 4 months

It was loose all over! My "Party Shirt" was loose in the neck, my jacket closed easily, and the cummerbund kept slipping off, even when I cinched it as tight as it allowed! SWMBO said I was quite fetching

So once again, I much prefer the non-scale victories as a good measure of success.

    WTG on the tux!! Hope you brought me back some beads!! NSV is about all I've got going atm. Scale refuses to budge BUT I did manage to notch my belt buckle Friday so that was great! Keep going!!

Busy do-bee day....and Mardi Gras plans!

OK, so here's the deal; I am so freaking busy this week that I'm not going to be able to work out for even 10 minutes until at least Friday night!

Today was another non-stop day of action starting at 6:30 AM and I just got home at 7:00 PM. We had a full conference agenda for all my guys, interspersed with a 1 hour VTC that stretched into 2.5 hours. I tried to wrap things up early in order to spend a little bit of time getting my brain around all of tomorrow's activities (we have our annual awards banquet....about 300 people showing up and I'm the host!), then I had to high tail it over to #2 son's school for a showing of "Hairspray" he was in.

Tomorrow is much the same pace, with the addition of the banquet that will probably go on till about 11:00 PM.

Friday I think settles down some, but my front office folks have been hinting all day that Friday is packed with all sorts of "to-do" list items that I've let slide this week during our conference. Come what may, I'm hitting the gym at 5:30 Friday afternoon!!

Then today I get a call from a real good friend that runs the Tourist Development Council down here saying they would really appreciate it if I would help them with their Mardi Gras parade this weekend and wouldn't it be nice if I could be a judge for the floats and maybe even walk some of the parade and could I possibly be there at 10:00 AM on Saturday!

Dude, where the hell have you been these past few weeks? Couldn't you have asked me a month ago?!?

Well, no rest for the wicked (and apparently not much workout time either). The good news is I ate better today (no cheesy artichoke-spinach dip to graze on). We got back and SWMBO grilled up some chicken on the barby and sauteed up some brussel sprouts (Yum!!).

#2 son and I are watching Star Wars episode 2 and he was thrilled to introduce us to his "girlfriend" at the play, so he's pretty happy (she's a shy, awkward 16-year old and he's a shy, awkward 17-year old so they're quite a pair. We agreed with her parents that we'd get them together to a movie or the mall sometime these next few weekends.....hey maybe she can joins us at Mardi Gras Saturday!)

    I hear you on work taking over workouts! I squeezed in 2-5 minute Coach Nicole workouts this morning and made sure to walk to work both yesterday and today since I knew I wouldn't have real workout time.

I'm maxed out on PTO time for work, so tomorrow I am taking a half day (although it is split between half the half day in the morning and the other half in the afternoon because I have two midday meetings I can't miss), so I will be able to get in a GOOD workout in the morning before I go in. Yeah!!!

Choking on Spinach-Artichoke Dip

So I survived today's non-stop events. I was pretty much "On" all day from about 7:00 AM till 7:30 PM.

Food intake was pretty good....until I logged the 2 fistfuls of cashews & almonds I grabbed around 3:00 and the 4 dollops of spinach-artichoke dip I mopped up with some nice Italian bread.

At least I kept hydrated throughout the day!

SWMBO was pissed because she was the only spouse there tonight. I thought I told folks to bring their significant others to the reception tonight, but most of them ended up coming stag.

Tomorrow will be about the same pace as today, with the difference being a night visit to #2 son's school for some type of performance. The good news is, there shouldn't be any spinach-artichoke dip there!

    LOOVE spinach artichoke dip, but it is very dangerous! Maybe I should try to find a healthier recipe for it!

    I agree with the other comments - only 4 dollops of S/A dip? That's takes strength!!!!

I don't think you went overboard on anything. The nuts are good for you and at least the dip you choose was vegetable based!!!!

To blog or not to blog...

To blog or not to blog.....when faced with that dilemma, I'll do one of 2 things; 1) Blog, or 2) Say to hell with it and go to bed. Today, well, you can see which way I decided.

In the end I enjoy it. I find it helps me organize my thoughts for the day, it affords me the opportunity for public accountability of how I did diet & exercise-wise, and it helps make clear any number of minor annoyances or anxieties I've got about......you guessed it, diet & exercise.

Today was my first day back in the office after almost 2 weeks on the road and it was a non-stop express ride the whole day. I mentioned yesterday that we've got a lot going on this week and so as I reviewed the final details on our 3-day conference and awards banquet, my spidey sense started tingling on some things that had been left out. Nothing malicious or bad on anyone's part, just things I had taken for granted were getting done, but weren't. So I had to go into predator mode and start giving the 3000 psi finger to folks to close up a couple of important loops.....minor things like "where are the awards we're giving out?!?!"

So it felt very good to slide out of the office and over to the gym. Now here's one of life's cruelest injustices; with strength training, even a minor break (7-10 days) can feel like you've taken a year off in the Tuscan Sun. Last week I did a ton of cardio, balanced with some pushups and situps and a few token deadlifts...but apparently not enough.

That's why I like having trainer guy around. I got there 20 minutes late, no time to warm up, so I told him "Let's jump into a moderate workout, 2 sets each instead of 3, and let's workout out as much of chest & shoulders as we can in 45 minutes"

And so we did....he modified the weights and reps to make sure that, in his own cruel Stasi-inspired mind, that I strained every muscle fiber to its allowable limit in just 3/4 of an hour!

Anyway, tomorrow SWMBO and I are hosting a "no-host" social for about 30 conference attendees....I steered the caterer towards healthier hors d'oeuvres, but there'll be a smattering of heavier fare as well. Wednesday #2 son has a school play we're going to, then Thursday SWMBO and I are hosting the banquet that has about 300 folks signed up so far....I ordered the chicken & veggies instead of the steak and potato....would never have thought that way a year ago!

    Yep, I've never known why a short break from weights can feel more like eons when you finally get back into the routine, but HOORAY for making use of that time with the PT. Sounds like excellent choices during a very busy week!

Well I finally made it back home yesterday....it was a 10 hour travel day! For whatever reason, my staff got me 2 connecting flights to make it back home; Kansas City to Dallas to Atlanta to Ft Walton Beach...Yikes! They somehow convinced me that this would get me home quicker than one connection. I think they were messing with my head and high-fiving each other after I left. Luckily everything ran on time....even though some wicked snow started blowing through Kansas in the AM.

As I look back on this past week I realized I worked out 7 days in a row since last Sunday. Now some of those workouts were just 30 minutes long, but here's the deal....that's still a 30 minute workout. Now here's the really cool deal....I said above that the workout was "just 30 minutes long"

I now feel cheated if all I can get in is 30 minutes! Five years ago when I started getting serious about exercise, mostly running, a 30 minute run was pretty exhausting....I was out of Schlitz after that. Over time I slowly built that up (my favorite motivational saying in those days was "My long runs will soon become my short runs")

Now I'm on the other end of that spectrum....some days, I think "Well if all I can do is 20-30 minutes it's hardly worth changing clothes"

WRONG!!!

I felt perfectly energized on those "short" workouts this week. I just upped the intensity a little to get more out of it. As a matter of fact, when I hit Atlanta, rather than take the tram from Terminal T to terminal D, I just plugged in my headphones, put on the racy tunes I use for my Tabata Intervals and did the Hallway Heisman sprint through the tunnels to stretch out my legs....10 extra minutes of perfectly good cardio, while carrying and towing about 40 lbs of gear.

But today is a rest day. I actually slept in till about 7:00 and woke up feeling great. It's nice and foggy here in the panhandle, so I'll get some reading done watching the fog roll in over the water (which will be perfect....for reasons unknown even to me, I'm in the middle of a Horatio Hornblower book; I'm in a nautical mood maties!)

I do need to go into the office for a few hours. I'm hosting a 3-day conference here this week of my far flung empire of 13 division across the country. We're doing a "no host" social Tuesday night and our annual awards banquet on Thursday, so free time will be at a premium.

That's all for now Spark friends....today's menu will be green smoothies and veggies to detox from 5 days of Kansas City BBQ and steaks!

    Good for you. But I still have a hard time thinking of a green smoothie as a de-toxifier, to me it sounds pretty toxic : )
Give me berries and fruit for my smoothie, and green stuff for my stir-fry : )

But you're miles ahead of me in the fitness/health field so maybe I should be changing my ways too!

    Would love to have seen the airport sprint emoticon. I used to be the same about cycling. If I couldn't get in 25 milez, why bother? Now, I love my short commutes as much as I do my long rambles.
