As I sit here shucking corn for a steamed corn dish, I will be eating two ears. I can feel you and I understand why you went away. Have a nice day.

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN SPEECH 1779 CONVENTION FOR FORMING A CONSTITUTION FOR THE US

Thursday, September 01, 2011

speech made by Benjamin Franklin in 1787 during Convention for forming a Constitution for the United States.

"Except the Lord build the house..." In the beginning of the contest with Britain, when we were sensible of danger, we had daily prayers in this room for the Divine protection. Our prayers, sir, were heard, and they were graciously answered. All of us who were engaged in the struggle must have observed frequent instances of a superintending Providence in our favour. To that kind Providence we owe this happy opportunity of consulting in peace on the means of establishing our future national felicity. And have we now forgotten this powerful Friend? Or do we imagine we no longer need His assistance?

I have lived for a long time (eighty-one years); and the longer I live the more convincing proofs I see of this truth, that God governs in the affairs of man. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid? We have been assured, sir, in the sacred writings, that "Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it." I firmly believe this; and I also believe that without His concurring aid we shall proceed in this political building no better than the builders of Babel: we shall be divided by our little, partial, local interests; our prospects will be confounded; and we ourselves shall become a reproach and a by-word down to future ages.

And what is worse, mankind may hereafter, from this unfortunate instance, despair of establishing government by human wisdom, and leave it to chance, war, or conquest. I therefore beg leave to move that henceforth prayers, imploring the assistance of Heaven and its blessing on our deliberations, be held in this assembly every morning before we proceed to business; and that one or more of the clergy of this city be requested to officiate in that service.

The writing and expressions of all the "founding fathers" of the U.S. are so eloquent and beautifully formed. Not all of them thought of themselves as Christians (e.g. Jefferson) but all had deep abiding faith in some form of God. And of course, idealism and a deep commitment to creating the structures for government that could last beyond their time. Despite all the problems, and all the deep divisions, contradictions (e.g. slavery) and conflicts over time, we are still here. The Civil War for instance, came close to destroying the country; somehow we recovered. That is wondrous!

    Hi
Thank you for sharing this. Sometimes I think that perhaps our leaders should go back to school and study the history of the founding of our beautiful country. Somewhere, we have lost the ideas that made us so great.
Again, I thank you for sharing this.

Dancing

Monday, August 29, 2011

Went with Friends
to their church supper and dance--I danced every dance that I could by myself
We had a fun time--all of us are widows. Everytime I stopped dancing I would tear u p because the songs were the ones that My Husband and I danced to when we were young, I know that he was looking down and was happy that I was smiling.
How silly we ladies were--anything to keep each other smiling!!

I tried to remember--"Dance like no one is watching!"

Must be something in the weather doing this to us. I did the same thing yesterday, almost ate everything in the house, good thing I don't keep candy or sweets. Today is much better, good luck on your journey. Just keep going forward and eating good-for-you-foods and let life sort out the rest. Take care my friend and Life is Good !! emoticon
