Chris Downie...YES YOU, SPARKGUY...you are FIRED...I want a DIVORCE...
So if you are a Green Spark, just weeks or months into this journey or maybe you are a seasoned Sparker and you feel stuck, that may be what you feel like saying to Sparkpeople at times. Resist that urge to fire or divorce Sparkpeople. Stay with me here.
I don't like that evil word "plateau". I prefer to call it
PREMATURE UNPLANNED MAINTENANCE APPLICATION or PUMA for short.
Insert big, pretty, powerful, PANTHER-like, kitty here.
You are just practicing for maintenance, right? And practice makes perfect. Not really, but it does get easier.
I can put a positive spin on just about anything. Like the time Stupid Teflon Steve, my half-BIL's baby's momma got an infection off of a stripper pole
[I am not kidding, you can't make this stuff up]...and I said...
you could probably get Worker's Comp for that...
I got the [Shut up Trish] look. I was trying to find something positive about her situation. Anyway...
Part of the 5% challenge this week is to blog about a habit. So here it is. It is all about the Habit of having Commitment to Consistency...that is it! Yes, it is that simple. It is not complicated. However, it is a
S L O W process.
Since I have reached goal weight, or maybe because the incoming January Spark class is interested, I receive many questions about how I got here. I also get these in person. In person, I sometimes give the long answer, or smart answer, or short answer. At times, I get [oh I admire what you're doing, but I can't do all THAT! You are talkin to the hand.]
Well what is stopping you? What is your personal stop sign? What is holding you back?
If you really want to succeed, you need to figure that out.
[no I do not have YOUR answer for YOU]
Replace your Stop sign with the Commitment to Consistency sign. Push yourself through to the other side of that stop sign. EVERY DAY! You can overcome the Stop sign if you try and TRY HARDER. Think of the sign as a bright yellow triangle yield sign.
You have ONLY 2 choices here...either side of V...you can DO IT or NOT.
Treat this Sparkpeople thing like a marriage or a part time job. YES, it does involve that much commitment. The way I look at it is this is a part time job with full time benefits. Yes, I spend more time working out, grocery shopping, preparing food, logging and tracking on this site, reading blogs, etc. But, I FEEL better 24/7 and I am HEALTHIER. So the time commitment is worth it to me. That is a full time benefit!
COMMITMENT to CONSISTENCY is key. Figuring that out is half the battle.
You need to find it, keep it, and don't let it go. Start at the top of the spark points page. I think they are somewhat in order of importance: track food, fitness minutes, goals, learn to cook, read (educate yourself), water, etc...EVERY DAY. Then reward yourself when you do it.
TODAY set a new goal for yourself that is just a little push. Reward yourself when you get there. Overcoming the personal Stop sign and replacing it with the COMMITMENT to CONSISTENCY sign may be one of the most rewarding CHOICES you will ever make. You will enjoy the rewards of this marriage or part-time job. It is what will get you through it. I promise, I do. And no Chris, you are not fired.

On Tuesday, I was in the break-room, heating my STEEL CUT OATS, with APPLES and WALNUTS in the microwave, filling up my 5 c. WATER bottle.
Some of my co-workers were filling up on coffee, Mountain Dew, donuts, poptarts, McDonalds...nothing wrong with that...I am just saying...
Here's the New Years Resolution conversation that took place. Keep in mind, this is several different people talking, mostly men:
What's your New Years Resolution this year Trish?
Hers is always to stop smoking.
I didn't know she smoked.
Oh. [head scratch]
I TRY to explain my 5 MORE MORE MORE goals...
I will eat MORE fruits and vegetables
I will eat MORE healthy fats
I will eat MORE protein for breakfast
I will eat MORE whole grains
I will drink MORE water
That's ALL you do... EAT EAT EAT. [I eat SMALL portions every 2-3 hours]
That is too easy.
Why do you always pick something that you KNOW you can do?
[I think this was the exact moment that I thought my head was going to explode]
Do you make resolutions that you KNOW you can't/won't keep? Do you make the same ones over and over without having a plan in place to make them work for you?
She got that from those SMARTPEOPLE on the internet.
It is SPARKPEOPLE, not SMARTPEOPLE.
Oh yeah, I have seen her do jumping jacks at the copier.
[another explosion in my head moment]
I exit, saying:
Enjoy your breakfast.
[It is difficult to have an intelligent conversation when you are not speaking with SMARTPEOPLE]
So I guess I will be doing kickboxing at the copier now.

I am not a New Year's resolutions kind of girl.
I learned long ago...they just don't work for me.
If you are not working for me, then you are FIRED, not gonna do it.
My co-workers have been discussing their resolutions since 12/27. They always ask about mine. And every year I say "I resolve to keep...quit smoking".
Normally that would not be funny but, I quit smoking, for the second and FINAL time OVER 11 YEARS AGO. So it is no surprise, they give me a puzzled look. I can see their brain trying to wrap around that..."she doesn't smoke, does she?". I can see the moment it clicks in their head....that look...as if to say "smart-a$$".
This year, I decided I need a new SMART ANSWER.
Their resolutions tend to be the NOW NOW NOW, the not SMART goals, kind of things. Tomorrow when they ask, I know they will, I will say things like:
I will eat MORE fruits and vegetables (I average 5-7 a day now, I try to get 9, but that is rare)
I will eat MORE healthy fats
I will eat MORE protein for breakfast
I will eat MORE whole grains
(these three involve paying closer attention to the nutrients that I track...I stay in range, but I need to eat more cleanly)
I will continue to drink MORE water(than they do)...I drink at LEAST 10 cups a day.
They make comments about how many times I use the restroom. I still say, I should get SPARK POINTS for that. My DH says that elimination it just as important as consumption.
See the pattern here...I want MORE MORE MORE. So many of my co-workers' resolutions are centered on the negative. So I, always going against the grain, will focus on the POSITIVE implications of MORE MORE MORE.

Thanks to EVERYONE that came to my Goal Party yesterday. It was great! Spark peeps are the BEST! I said PARTY like you mean it and LIVE like you mean it. You guys know how to party!
Thanks to MOUNTAINMERMAID and PYNETREE and JBLOSSOM for bringing healthy snacks and wine to share.
Thanks to LINDAJO621, NORAB52GOOD, JUST_TRI_IT, NEVERORNOW, IRISHBEANERGAL MTULLY, MISSY455, MAPEGASUS, MANDYSFITAT40, and KELLEEH for staying to help clean up all of the confetti they brought...it looked like Times Square in here.
We had a cutest PJ contest...it was a 3-way tie between CHEEKY1000 in pink plaid PJs and MAY2459 in blue snowman PJs and OLDERANDRT in Minnie Mouse flannel PJs, Wow, Spark peeps have great taste in PJs.
Somebody put RUARUGBYNUT2 in the hospital bed, then raised the foot and head of the bed, so he was stuck. I think it had something to do with the JUNK FOOD he brought.
Thanks to REDRENNY for helping with the car keys...no problems there. Everyone that consumed alcohol (mostly in MODERATION) spent the night.
Everyone was well mannered. Nobody made a mess or broke anything. Good thing we live in the country though. In the city, the neighbors may have called the law for the noise. You guys know how to have fun! I had a friend in college that had a party philosophy...it is NOT a Party, unless the COPS show up. I said that to a cop once...man, he had NO sense of HUMOR.
Someone brought me a hostess gift of IRISH WHISKEY CHOCOLATE...WHOA that was DECADENT. Irish AND chocolate...what's not to love?
At midnight we ate black eyed peas, beer bratwurst(pork), and sauerkraut for good luck. We will eat the leftovers again today for more good luck. You can't have enough good luck. And the PARTY continues today...WHY...because TODAY is my 1 YEAR SPARKVERSARY.
Do you have a family tradition of eating certain foods on New Years day? Feel free to bring your favorite dish to the Sparkversary Party today. Thanks again, to EVERYONE!

You are invited to join in the PARTY!
It is BYOB and your PJs. I DO require you to check your car keys and all weapons at the door. I do NOT tolerate drunk driving at all! Hey, my house, my rules.
You are invited because I want to THANK YOU and, well, I COULD have done it without you (I AM a Warrior Princess you know), but doing it WITH you was more FUN!
So let's end this year on a high note. I am so looking forward to the new year!
I hit my goal weight this New Year's Eve morning. 2011 was my year of weight loss. That's how I will most likely remember it. Not really, I will probably remember the year as my DH fell out of a tree, breaking several bones, including his a$$, throwing me for a loop, causing me stress, year.
Read my bra strap blog if you need that story.
DH is healing nicely. His PT in impressed with his progress. He said he has 3 things working in his favor: his age, his fitness level at the time of his injury and his MOTIVATION. Motivation goes a long way! He can climb the stairs slowly now. He can sleep upstairs in our bed. Speaking of which...the designer hospital bed is still in our living room. DH decided on 12/23 that he did not need the bed any longer, but his employer did not have anyone available to pick it up. End of the month, end of the year, they are short one employee(DH), blah, blah, blah. So I STILL have the designer bed. On 12/24 we had 20 people here so we put a Michigan blanket on it(just to irritate our Buck-nut relatives) and used it as extra seating.
Wasn't allowed to decorate it as I wanted because we were just "borrowing" the bed.
I did receive a swell Christmas present...that I am still displaying...a strand of SHOTGUN SHELL CHRISTMAS LIGHTS. My inner redneck loves them!
I am thinking of changing SS-- Stupid Steve to TS--meaning Teflon Steve. Nothing sticks to him! The lawyer, that I pay for, through taxes, I mean, got his doctor, that I pay for, to get him out of jail, that I pay for. WTH He got out of jail and went to Florida with the plane ticket that my DH bought for him in exchange for helping him cut down the tree. And he has procession of Steve's snowblower as collateral. I thought my head was going to explode when I discovered that little tidbit! If you live in FL, I am truly sorry. I have no problem paying for his jail accommodations when he is here. I like to know WHERE he is.
On Christmas Eve my MIL suggested that one of my DH's nephews(her grandson) come over and finish cutting up the tree. The same nephew that, several years ago, traded 2 of my DH's chainsaws for drugs. DH said thanks, but no. I can assure you, there will none of my in-laws at the Goal party.
My life is still not back to" normal" after the whole tree ordeal.
I am a runner though. That bitter old woman gym teacher I had in 7th grade, told me I would never be an athlete. I should look her up, just to give her a piece of my mind, she could use it. Not sure if she is still living. What a terrible thing to say to a young girl. That stuck with me my entire life. She is not invited to the Goal party either.
Well, I am off to make some yummy(healthy) appetizers for our party! We WILL be having black-eyed peas, pork sausage, and sauerkraut at midnight, of course! Will play a party game of some sort to determine who gets to sleep in the designer hospital bed.
