What I learned on the school bus on the way to MAINTENANCE

Wednesday, December 12, 2012

They say the REAL education takes place on the bus on the WAY TO school. The education about real life. emoticon

Perhaps the same goes for the weight maintenance education. I haven't learned much new information since making it to maintenance.

On 12/31/12 it will be one year of maintaining for me. emoticon

Most of what I learned about maintenance, I learned right here, on SparkPeople, before I actually got to maintenance. It's not that different from losing weight. Education is key...I read and re-read articles on Spark frequently. I play trivia and take quizzes for reminders to stay on track. I have backed off from blogging just because of time restrictions. I'd rather work-out or take a hike than blog about it. emoticon

Maintenance requires an independent spirit. Maintainers are in the minority...always. The 5% everyone refers to. . . most people will fail, mmkay... sorry, just the way it is. There is no safety in numbers here. In some situations it may not be the popular choice either. Maintenance is not as glamorous and exciting as weight-loss. Fewer compliments and less attention. If you are in weight-loss mode and that motivates you, find something a substitute now.

The closest thing to an ah-ha moment for me was realizing that there is no end to maintenance. emoticon

It is FOREVER. The end is just...death. That's all.

Not gonna lie...

Maintenance is not for sissy-dawgs.

Maintenance is hard!

I have learned to accept the fact that I will go up and down constantly in my 5 pound goal weight range.

The sacrifices don't stop, but they are so worth it.

It is hard, just like losing weight was hard. It is a different kind of hard though.

Just like being fat was hard. There are different varieties of hard.

Simply pick the kind of hard you want.

I pick the maintenance hard.

You can too! Spark on!

Congrats on a year of maintaining, but at some point, the new lifestyle either becomes reinforcing or it doesn't. I would live the way I live now whether it had brought me weight loss or not. I just like living without overeating the way I used to. That is its own reward.

Yes, maintenance IS hard work. I guess it just never ends. The part about not blogging as much as you'd rather work out, smacked me upside the head. I used to blog quite a bit. Mainly to earn those 3 points, but now I go to Curves almost every day and earn way more than 3 little points! I haven't blogged in months! BUT, I am now in size 8 skinny jeans, (I do believe they run big, but the tag says 8!!) and who cares what my cats are up to or what trips I've taken? I guess I've re-set my priorities so that keeping a sharp mind about weight loss and maintenance are a higher priority than composition. And right now, my priorities are losing that Holiday weight! Here's to another year of maintenance!

Yes maintenance is the most unglamorous part of the journey. People are only interested if you have lost a lot of weight or have failed spectacularly. We are the unsung workhorses. But nothing feels so good as a fit body, normal clothes and the ability to do what ever you put you mind to -lessons learned during the journey..
Happy Maintaining!

The Bad Ass Rock Stars Team Eat to Live May Nutrition Challenge

Sunday, April 29, 2012

I will be starting a month long individual challenge on Monday 4/30. I will earn points each day for the following (portions copied from the team page):

1) "Staying in range and Consistency in range: get 1 point if you stay in your range for calories/fat/carbs/protein. You will get the amount of points of whatever day of your streak you are on - 1 point for day 1, 2 for day 2, 3 for day 3, etc...- the larger streak you can build, the better you'll do!"

This should not be a problem for me. I may struggle with protein sometimes...blasted jelly beans do not have the same nutritional value as other beans! They should not be allowed to call them beans. emoticon

2) "Pick something you struggle with eating wise - you will focus on something different each week. You will get 3 pts for each day you refrain from (or if yours is a positive like eating x freggies, etc, you will get points for doing the good thing)"

My first week it will be strategic snacking. Have the planned good snack when I should and skip the bad snacks that seem to jump out and force me to eat them. I just ate my LAST stale Peep. emoticon

3) "You can earn 10 points per recipe if you make a healthy recipe and blog about it (max 30pts/week)."

I will most likely have trouble with this one. Not the recipes, but I don't take the time to blog much. I used to blog at work, but no longer able to do that. I journal everyday, just not in a public blog. Did you know you can get the 3 blog Spark points for journaling in your planner page on Sparkpeople?

4) "You can earn 5 points for each Sparkrecipe you make based on another teammate's blog (max 10pts/week)"

I should be able to do that, unless my teammate's recipes sound absolutely disgusting. emoticon

5) "Weekend Bonus - you will get a 5 point bonus for staying in range on Saturdays & Sundays"

I can do that...I can stay in range, even if that means dry Cheerios for dinner. emoticon

Bonus Points:
1) "Blog about the challenge prior to it starting - 5 points"

...here you go...DONE emoticon

I think I am already a bad ass rock star when it comes to fitness. But I really need to work on nutrition. Feel free to join me in this challenge if you like.

My SOUVENIR from SYDNEY AUSTRALIA and a little something for YOU too!

Saturday, March 31, 2012

This is about my little souvenir I picked up the last time I was in Sydney Australia. And a little gift for you too.

pics from tourists destinations and bug Australia

In the Spring 5% Challenge out next destination is Sydney Australia. I got the plane off the ground this morning for the Clovers. The last time I was in Australia (wink wink) I brought home this little cutie...

She is the newest member of our family...a female Blue & Tan Australian Terrier puppy...when she is older, she will lose some of her black...and develop a scruffy mane around her face...full grown, she will be slightly larger than our cat...Theo Doorman. We finally decided on her middle name. Thanks to everyone for all of the name suggestions in a previous blog. emoticon

We named her SYDNEY ULUROO. Our last name starts with a V...so her initials are SUV. She is going to be my little Sport Utility Vehicle...as soon as I get her trained to be my little running buddy. emoticon

We named her after the city Sydney and Uluru National Park. We changed the spelling... more like Jillaroo or kangaroo. emoticon

emoticon And my gift to you...not something you can feel or touch or return if you don't like it...it is not a cheesy touristy dust collector or ugly t-shirt... it is more like advice or words of encouragement....TRACK YOUR FOOD AND STAY IN RANGE. Oh, that is the second part of the challenge this week. I am sorry, if you don't like to track. I think it is a necessary evil if you are going to be successful at this. I am a numbers kind of girl, so I don't mind tracking. You must KNOW exactly what you are eating. Think of it as KNOWLEDGE...which will give you POWER to WIN. Knowledge is power.

    Hi Trish,

I just saw the pics of your darling dog!!!
I have had Australian Silky Terriers since I was 18. You are probably familiar with them. They were developed by crossing the Australian Terrier with the Yorkshire. They still have the spunk with a bit softer fur.

Thanks for the tracking gift as well!!! I have slipped in that department lately (and it shows)!

I'm one of those girls too. I lean more toward the Irish part because my maiden name is Sullivan, but I love my mother's German culture too. One thing they have in common is beer! I really like it, but I can't drink because of the meds I take.

Your trip sounds great, and your pup is a little doll. Most of all, thanks for reminding me of the power of tracking.

Yes I too am a SPARK WH@∑(starts with a W rhymes with BOAR...definition-n.--a person considered

Wednesday, February 29, 2012

Edited on 4 Mar. 2012...I was asked by Spark Coach Jen to edit this blog because of a word I used in the original blog...considered profanity...apparently not caught by the profanity filter... a word that appears in the Bible...nothing wrong with that, I'm just saying. So the word has now been removed.

If you have read my Spark page or previous blogs, you know that I am a self-proclaimed SPARK WARRIOR, SPARK PRINCESS, and SPARK REBEL. Now I must tell you that I am a SPARK W#@%$(starts with a W rhymes with BOAR...definition-n.--a person considered as having compromised principles for personal gain, v.--to compromise one's principles for personal gain)
...there I said it.

That is the first step...admitting what you are or have become. Is there a 12 step for this? I don't know.

This isn't a new condition for me. I was a W#@%$(starts with a W rhymes with BOAR...definition-n.--a person considered as having compromised principles for personal gain, v.--to compromise one's principles for personal gain) one other time in my life.

It is not what you think It was when our house was under construction. It was estimated to take 5 months. We put our city house on the market and it sold within a couple of months(this was 15+ years ago---those days are over). We couldn't find a place to rent month to month and we didn't want to sign a lease...it's only going to be 5 months right? So, against my better judgement, we moved into my mother's basement. Thus, turning us into her BOARDER W#@%$(starts with a W rhymes with BOARS...definition-n.--a person considered as having compromised principles for personal gain, v.--to compromise one's principles for personal gain).

We were at her disposal for WHATEVER WHENEVER she wanted. Going to work was my only time of sanity. Forgot to mention that the 5 months turned into 18 months due to the seemingly endless delays and the incompetent general contractor that we fired. Anyway, that was the longest 18 months of my life.

I was not a W#@%$(starts with a W rhymes with BOAR...definition-n.--a person considered as having compromised principles for personal gain, v.--to compromise one's principles for personal gain) again, until now...

I became a SPARK W#@%$(starts with a W rhymes with BOAR...definition-n.--a person considered as having compromised principles for personal gain, v.--to compromise one's principles for personal gain) in December, but I didn't realize it until last month.

It was my own fault, I didn't carefully read an email I received from SP. In my defense, it was December 12th. I had a lot going on then. I was almost at goal weight. I was excited to receive the email from SP...I thought I was getting a Spark present for being such a good Spark Warrior or something...I was flattered to be included in the 200 count "exclusive list of Sparkpeople members" to receive a free copy of Coach Nicole's 28 day Boot Camp DVD. All I had to do...write a review in a blog by Feb. 29th. Oh I can do that, I thought. I regularly do Nicole's workouts on SP, so that is no biggie.

When I received the DVD, it included a paper that said I needed to do the review by Jan 31st. WTH That irritated me. I would not have agreed to that deadline...Jan. is the busiest work month for me.

To prepare my blog about the DVD, I went back to read the email again...that's when I realized the select group was Popular Blog Award recipients...oh...I feel like a Spark W#@%$(starts with a W rhymes with BOAR...definition-n.--a person considered as having compromised principles for personal gain, v.--to compromise one's principles for personal gain) now.

I feel violated...I don't TELL people to "like" my blogs. And I don't send emails asking for "likes". And I don't trick the reader with "press "like" if you did 10 minutes today". I don't feel the need to insult the intelligence of the reader by telling them what to "like".

I "like" a blog if I really like it. OK, Popular Blog Award rant over now.

Since this Spark W#@%$(starts with a W rhymes with BOAR...definition-n.--a person considered as having compromised principles for personal gain, v.--to compromise one's principles for personal gain) has a sense of integrity, I will hold up my end of the deal I made...so here is yet another review of Coach Nicole's new 28-Day Boot Camp DVD.

First, let me say, I use workout DVDs sometimes, not frequently. And I do like Coach Nicole as an instructor.

What I liked:

There is no nonsense fluff at the beginning to wade through...you can get right to it.

The women in the DVD look real...not overly done-up or dressed inappropriately, presenting 3 different intensity levels.

You can pick and choose what segments you want to do...easy to navigate menu.

Easy to customize your workout by intensity, segment, and time.

Includes a 28 day plan that you can follow...or not.

It is a well put together workout.

No difficult choreography, easy to follow, but a decent workout.

Coach Nicole is positive and professional, not obnoxious, encouraging you along the way, explaining moves clearly.

On-screen countdown timer.

Includes warm up, cool down, cardio, strength, tone, and total body.

Easy to add to the Sparkpeople fitness tracker.

What I felt was just OK(I wouldn't say dislike):

At times the most difficult level wasn't hard enough for me.

When I think "bootcamp", I think extreme, hardcore...this was not.

Would like a music(different) only option.

Overall, I think this is a great DVD I would recommend for the beginner to intermediate Sparker, as long as you are cleared for exercise from your doctor. If you are training for the Olympics...not so much.

And from the legal department: I received this DVD for free from SparkPeople and did not receive any form of payment for my review.

The DVD is available at Target, and you can get a $3 off Target coupon for it at www.sparkpeople.com/28daybootcamp . You also get 250 SparkPoints for purchasing the DVD from Target.

One thing I know for sure...there is no 12-step for stupid.

We are generating as a society when a specific, in the dictionary, in the bible, word is banned. Funny how the idea (your humorous explanation) is allowed, but not the correct word.

I believe in allowing ideas, and certain words convey those ideas. To ban the word, but allow the idea, is hypocritical, and I believe the idea should not be banned.

Even the 2 letter version is not appropriate.

WE are a strange society indeed.

Great Blog, and funny as H%&*# (that warm place referred to in the bible too).

What a shame adults are forbidden from using certain words.

True, Pomelo. The word had that connotation from Roman times, even before the rise of Christianity. Before that, the root of the word merely meant "secular" (as opposed to sacred) without necessarily meaning "polluted."

In that sense, using "profanity" does not have to exclusively be related to using a deity's name in vain.

Don't you just love word history?! We learn so much about our cultural history. : )

Spark W#@%$(starts with a W rhymes with BOAR...definition-n.--a person considered as having compromised principles for personal gain, v.--to compromise one's principles for personal gain) and F*** are not profane but they are crude or coarse language. Swearing and using profanity is using God's name in vain - regardless of your faith.

That's ridiculous. "Whore" is not profanity. "F-ck" is profanity. Calling someone a "whore" is incredibly insensitive, rude, and beyond excusing, but it is not profanity. People are too damn sensitive these days. I don't use profanity around children. Otherwise, I use it as context seems to demand. I thought your use of the word made sense, given your context. Probably somebody was irritated that you were mildly critical of the system and decided to just tweak you about the word. I wouldn't sweat it, though it is irritating for sure.

Please HELP name our new PUPPY (w/pics)

Sunday, February 19, 2012

Please help! We need some fresh ideas in naming our new puppy. emoticon

I took me 5 years to get this 8 week old puppy. I had time to think of a name...but I didn't. emoticon

I have been working on my DH to get a puppy for 5 years. It was always one excuse after another. First it was...wait till DD is 8 years old...she is now 13. Then it was...wait till DS is 8...he is now 10. Two years ago I enlisted the kids in begging for a puppy with me. A little over a year ago DH finally said yes, IF HE could pick the breed. OK dear. emoticon

You are now saying, "wow, I am glad these two people found each other, that way, they are not screwing up two other people's lives." emoticon

It took months for him to research every dog book and the internet. He decided on an Australian Terrier. Last fall he searched and found one...we went to go meet him...he was deaf. So he wasn't sure about that. It took me 2 weeks to talk him into it...we went back to adopt him...and he was gone. So the search began again. Then right after Thanksgiving last year, DH fell out of a tree, breaking his @ss and shoulder...he is still not 100%...so puppy search come to a stop. In January he thought he was well enough to start the puppy search again. He finally found one...here she is...the newest member of our family...a female Blue & Tan Australian Terrier...when she is older, she will lose some of her black...and develop a scruffy mane around her face...full grown, she will be slightly larger than our cat...

We need some help in choosing a name...2 names...a first and middle.

There are some names OFF LIMITS...former pets or other family member's pets:

Sheba
King
Honey
Spot
Nicholas
Shaggy
Muffy
Flurrie
Dusty
Diesel
Turbo
Crusher
Bullet
Ace
Rocky
Cocaine (really...Teflon Steve's white cat)
Boss
Shadow
Salem
Charlie Brown
Lolita Monroe
Pepper Ann

And our current pet cat:
Theo Doorman

For the puppy my DS likes girl names:

Sydney
Dori

My DD likes names:

Tazzie (Tasmania)
Cinnamon

My DH likes Australian names:

Brizzie (Brisbane)
Ozzie
Sydney

I like clever names:

Ms. DeMeanor
De O'Gee
Dandy Lion (when she is older, she will have a lion-like mane)

Any suggestions? We are leaning toward Sydney for a first name...but we need a middle name too. What do you think?

Wow, she looks like a miniature version of our dog (and ours was a hand-me-down from an elderly lady who was a friend of my mother-in-law and both women have since passed away, and this lady had gotten it from the pound from another couple who had to move to nursing home and couldn't care for the dog, etc). Ours is larger than out cat, but still only about 18 pounds, stands about knee high on me. Her name is Angel. But seeing as you've been to Australia and you were leaning towards Sydney, that's cute, and maybe the middle name ? does she need a middle name?? could also be something Aussie, like, IDK, maybe like "Sheila" or Queen(ie) Sydney... heh. We had a friend in Kansas who met & married a gal from Australia and her name was Nicole. But he's now married to Hilary. Which I think is a Hilarious name!!! I don't know the personality of your little pup - doubtless will change as she gets older and maybe it won't be so hilarious at first, especially the first time she chews up all your favorite clothing, furniture, etc so doubtless need to keep some chew toys around while she is growing into her adult teeth.

Oh and I hadn't seen the De O'Gee like that but we did know another "DeeOhGee" and his sibling "CeeAyyTee". haha.

what other cities are there in Australia? Dawson. Brisbane. Percy. Opal! hey that would be cute too, beautiful stone and they mine it in Australia.

Oh well, I can't even think of a new name to change my SP name to, what makes me think I can help with a dog name!!

(and we had similar pet names too - we had a cat named Diesel. another cat name Bullet, both long gone. We've had dogs named Jethro, Sharita, Princess Licorice Magnolia Jasmine - "Candy" for short... can't remember the other dogs right now.)

Have fun!

  Your puppy is adorable!

I once had a "Taz" but it was short for "Razzamatazz".

I love De O'Gee - it took me a second to get it, but somehow that just makes it a little better. But I'm not sure how I would feel about standing the the backyard calling "De O'Gee, c'mon. Here De O'Gee"....

I always had huge dogs growing up, but we recently got our first small one - full grown and slightly smaller than the cat. I found the book "Little Dogs: Training your pint sized companion" by Deborah Wood to be useful if you were used to larger dogs before. It's not so much about small dogs being different as about people treating small dogs differently, which can sometimes lead to behavior problems big and small. If you can get it from the library I'd recommend it.

Loved the pics! She is SO cute! I don't have a name recommendation, but I do have a book recommendation. I just got this at half-price books and wish I would have had it and used it when Mia was younger...but I am using it now. "The Love That Dog Training Program" by Dawn Sylvia-Stasiewicz and Larry Kay. I think that, if DH was that apprehensive about getting a puppy, he will like it a lot more if it is well trained. I'm really working on Mia's training now...and it's a fun bonding time. Good luck with the names...can't wait to hear what you pick out! Spark on! emoticon

How cute is she ? How about "Roo?" It captures Australia and the her smallness. Also the Pooh charachter, Roo, is energetic and sweet. Lastly, the book, The Hunger Games, which is a phenomena, has a fiesty small girl named Roo.

Don't the Aussies call females "Sheila's"? That's a possible one! Maybe you could work it in with Tazzie or Sydney??? She's a real cutie! I hope you ALL will be happy with your newest family member!!! emoticon

What a cute puppy! When my mom got a new dog and was trying to decide on a name, I had her "audition" each name with the puppy. The name the puppy responded to best was the name she chose (cricket). Maybe you could try that!

Well I don't want to point out the obvious here, but is your hunny bunches of oats, the one with the broken a$$ a wee bit controlling? Just sayin

I am happy for you and the kids, sad that you all had to wait this long, but very cute little puppy. I too like the name Sydney, there are a million dogs (worked as a vet tech for years) with the name Dee-Oh-Gee, and I also like the name Dandy Lion really the best as most inventive, and out of the ordinary.

Keep the puppy pics coming, we/I will be excited to see how she changes as she grows.

You my friend may be the most patient wife in the history of getting married and living with another person of the opposite sex. You deserve a medal.

Could not find a medal, hope a trophy will do.

I like Sydney out of the names you picked. I also like dandi lion. The dog is adorable! You could always name her Sydney Kay (Kay short for kangaroo).

We just went through naming our puppy, which was also 5 years in the making....my wife and I divorced and remarried first!

His name is Max, but I secretly call him Maxwell!

Here are names that we didn't chose. Although I liked some better. Buddy, Bullet, Chase, Baxter, Butler, Sammy....

In sticking with the Aussie names how about Sheila (as in female kangaroo) and middle name Roo (as in see previous info )

Just a thought.
emoticon

She is a cutie though, whatever you name her.

Let us know what you end up naming her.

I like Ponce de Leon, (play on words for a playful pouncing lion) but Sydney de Leon would work just as well. Naming pets is SO much fun! Enjoy those baby days, they disappear all to fast.
