Plans Changed

Thursday, February 24, 2011

My DH and I were planning to leave for Reno tomorrow night. He heard that a major snow storm was heading toward Reno (here too) and the roads would be closed. He really wants to go so he said we are leaving this afternoon. So, that leaves me with about 10 hours to get two days worth of stuff done.
I promised the grandbabies I'd take them to a zoo-toddler class so that was done. I did my week's grocery shopping and got dinner going in the crock pot for all those not going. The laundry is going, the grandbabies are busy playing and watching t.v., and I'm almost ready to pack. It'll be hard until all the laundry is done, but I can do a little at a time.
Whew! I'm going to be ready to take a mini vacation!

School Field Trip -- Woopee!

Wednesday, February 23, 2011

I really love our city of Fresno in Central California. I love not having snow or tornadoes or hurricanes. Yes, it's possible to have an earthquake but they're everywhere. The one thing we don't have is a lot of culture.
If a child lives in Washington, D.C., think of all the places she can go on a field trip: Smithsonian, U.S. mint, statues and monuments, cemetaries, etc. If he lives in New York, there's the theater, musuems, art displays, etc.
And where do you go in you live in Fresno? My grandson just told me he had a field trip on Friday? Where? The Dollar Store!!!! Go figure!

That is so funny! We live close enough to Washington DC that it's a regular "big" field trip destination when kids are in school. The funny thing is that when that happens, the kids don't appreciate it, because they almost become jaded once they've been a couple times.

The dollar store, now, that is truly different. When I was growing up in Iowa, we took class trips (not real often) but a few times a year, usually to Des Moines, musuems, capital, lots of places, and I even remember one day we stopped and watched a traffic cop do his dance directing traffic, he was a local celebrity, and I can not remember his name, this was in the 50's, and we had seen him on tv. needless to say that was one of the highlights of the day. we all loved it. But it was probably a good chanch for the students to get out and take a walk, assuming they walked, not a bus. We took quite a few field trips like that, I think just to make sure we got plenty of exercise. Oh well, to be young again, and look forward to the dollar store, lol
Have a great day.

LOL! The Fairmead museum recently opened...the funny thing is it's at the dump...is that better than the $ Store? Seriously, I've heard good things about it.

I have to tell you the first 2 field trips I went on when I started teaching in Madera were to CEMETERIES!!! I thought that was so weird but we were doing research for a book.

I've taken my classes to Monterey, Gilroy Gardens, and the San Jose Tech Museum. Those are all great. I've also taken my class to the Foresteire Gardens and the Sun Maid factory in Selma before. Also, for little kids, My Museum in Monterey is wonderful!

Too bad the Met closed because it was pretty cool too.

My son's school goes roller skating for one of their trips.

I definitely wouldn't spend the time/$ to go to the $ Store!

Dry Creek Park - Clovis, CA

Tuesday, February 22, 2011

What a wonderful park. It has a little of everything. It's located at Clovis Ave. and Alluvial. It even has a botanical gardens but I didn't visit it.
To begin with it has a walking path around the entire park. It's quite a distance. It also has five distinct physical fitness areas. And they are hard. Most of them I couldn't do!
It has play areas for everyone. There is a play area for teeny ones, a play area for toddlers, and a play area for older kids (the slides are high). It has swings. It even has a complete climbing area: A spider web type climbing structure, several climbing walls, and a plain old rock that was fun.
There are plenty of benches, tables (even a small one for kids), barbecues, and awnings. It has an area that overlooked a small lake and dry creek--only it wasn't dry.
And to top it all off? A beautiful clear view of the snow-capped Sierra!

I Reset My Calories!

Friday, February 18, 2011

When I started SPeople, they set my calories from 1600 to 1900 calories. Most days I don't get anywhere near that many. However, I try and try. In 1 1/2 years on SPeople, I haven't lost weight. I have gotten healthier, my blood pressure is normal, my blood work is great--except iron is too low--and I can walk a lot farther.
I recently went to the doctor and she said my for my age and amount of exercise, the calorie range is way too high. She said it should be between 1200 and 1500 calories daily. I try to walk 30 min. at a fairly normal pace and I am 65 years old. She said I would never lose, but never gain either, at the rate I was going.
So I reset my calories to 1200 - 1500 calories daily. I'm going to see how it works out.

Good call that your doctor was part of the process :) I keep hearing conflicting accounts of how much I should eat so am waiting to meet with a nutritionist.

me too, I reset mine to between 1200 and 1550 because I was just maintaining, as I lost my weight Sparks upped my intake, and I did reach my goal, but at Christmas I gained 2 pounds back, and I have yet to lose it, I figure I need to measure myself, to see if I am losing inches, and I really do try and put down all my food accurately. so Good Luck, hope the pounds start coming off.

when I first joined the calories were set high for me too when I used SP as a guide and I went nowhere. Since I've adjusted mine between 1200 and 1600 the weight is coming off. If I can only stay consistant all the time I'd be okay! We will have our ups & downs but as long as we get back on track we will success. Good luck to you!

A Good Wind

Thursday, February 17, 2011

I live in the central valley of California. We are known as the ag center of America. However, we are also a pit for smog. We not only have our own smog, but we get San Francisco's when there is a breeze. We also get forest fire smoke whenever there's a fire in the Sierra.
But, we have been having rain and a pretty good wind. And the results? The air clears, the smog is blown away, and we have the most stupendous view anywhere. The snow capped Sierra look like they're within reach. The foothills are dark and the Sierra behind them are just absolutely gorgeous. Give me a good breeze any day of the week!

Oh that sounds wonderful! My husband is a native Californian, and my son lived in SD for five years before moving back east. I love every opportunity to visit the state.
