A friend of mine, Shirley, was hiking Precipice Trail in Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor, Maine. Despite a valiant rescues by 39+ volunteers and paid services, including Acadia National Park Forest Service, Mount Island Search and Rescue, Bar Harbor Fire Department, Lifeflight plus a number of volunteers, an effort lasting over 6 hours. She was pronounced dead at Eastern Maine Medical Center (EMMC) in Bangor, Maine at 5pm.
Shirley was hiking with a friend, approximately 3/4 of the way up the trail and having just finished the most difficult part, fell on a rock shelf about 120 feet to the trail, just missing a passing hiker.
Shirlz was going to graduate in May, and was a friend to a large number of people-- even more so she was kind to everyone and was constantly trying to make people smile. She wasn't happy until everyone else was. We are missing a truly great, unique and interesting friend, beautiful inside and out. She will be missed and loved in our hearts and minds. mainecampus.com/2012/07/31/umaine-co
