My carb attack....

Saturday, January 14, 2012

I often have a "carb attack" when I feel I need some. I know that carbs are good for you but they need to be the right ones and not an over abundance.

For the holidays, my brother, each year, sends us a box of oranges from Florida. They are delicious.

Today, when I was on my way to the kitchen to get something sweet, I saw the oranges, grabbed one and that was my snack!! Isn't that great?

I feel like I satisfied my sweet tooth and didn't go for the sugar. Progress...progress...

Side note.....Dr. Oz mentioned that a tablespoon of peanut butter can curb cravings in 15 mins. I tried this last night and it worked. Just some peanut butter and wait the 15 mins and poof...craving gone. Try it!

Thanks for the tip. I rarely have a carb attack, but just in case this is good to know. I thought peanut butter was a protein?

Peanut butter--any protein--is filling and kills cravings. Apple and peanut butter is one of my favorite breakfasts (though sometimes it's lunch or dinner). It's the BAD carbs (grains, sugars) that cause the cravings. Give them up and you don't crave anymore! BTW, do you like Indian food? I'm finding that the heat from the spices fills me up more!

Oh I like that tip - love peanut butter.... I usually have a spoon full in the morning with a banana and it is amazing how filling it is.

16 years!!!!!!!!!!!

Friday, January 13, 2012

This is so hard to believe. Today, my son turns 16!

He came into this world during the great blizzard of '96. They called it the blizzard of the century. He hasn't stopped moving since!

He had kind of a rough start. He was what they called a "failure to thrive" baby. Apparently he had a "domed" pallet and couldn't suck very well. He was so tiny. I took him to an occupational therapist who manipulated the bones of his pallet when he was about 3 months old. Worked perfectly and he just thrived!

My son has always been a handful but I have always been grateful that he was mine. His athletic prowess has been awesome and I have beamed at every ball hit, every catch made or every wrestling match won (or lost, I was still proud).

Even though he is a hulk of a kid (all muscle) he has a very sweet gentle side that few see. I will take him to the animal shelter with me to volunteer. He will run dogs for miles so they get exercise, and will hold a kitten in his huge hand with such gentleness just to keep it warm.

I will always be proud of him. I am still shocked that 16 years have gone by so quickly but happy birthday to my wonderful son Joshua.

Awesome boy sounds like.......but then he had to have an
awesome Mom to turn out so good too.....

I am very close to my son also. My son is a ways past 16,
and has the same gentleness with animals and small children
just flock to him. I think they sense he is someone they
are safe with.

Congratulations on raising such a wonderful man to be........

I can understand how you feel. My son will be 5 years old next week and I can't believe it! He makes me laugh so hard sometimes and makes me feel like crying when he is impossible! lol
I had a hard pregnancy with him and we weren't sure he would make but I am so glad that I endured and kept him and didn't give up when I was suggested to.
I love him so much. I am so happy that I have so much love in my life.
Children bring so much joy into our lives.
Enjoy him :)

Under the knife....

Tuesday, December 27, 2011

Tomorrow is my foot surgery. I'm not really nervous, I just want it over with. Once again my friend Dawn is coming to the rescue to take me to the surgical center and then home again.

I am so annoyed with the center. They called me at 8:30 this morning and went over everything I needed to know for tomorrow. They told me to be there at 10:15. I called Dawn and set the entire thing up.

At about noon they called to remind me to be there at 10:15 and that I had a co-pay and not to forget to bring it.

Around 1, they called me, laughing and said, "Oh, forget about 10:15 we just changed the surgery to 7:30 am. I was furious. I spent time figuring out the day, asking favors of friends and they just think it's funny?

I just wish people would walk a mile in my shoes before they think things are easy for everyone.

Well, wish me luck. Tomorrow I get my foot fixed! Hooray!

My life isn't easy. I am a single mom, two kids that can be challenging (see other blogs LOL) but I have friends. Let me tell you about one of them. Her name is Dawn.

A couple of days ago the FedEX guy brings me a package with a gift certificate to "Kindle" in it from Dawn. I thought, hmmmm how odd. Then I thought that I could use this to download books onto her Kindle which I could borrow. That was sweet.

She came over later that day and I thanked her for the gift certificate and said it was sweet even though I didn't own a Kindle. She grumbled something about Amazon being run by idiots and said, "You do now."

OMG, she got me a Kindle (which arrived today along with a case too) AND gift certificate. I'm still in shock, but so happy. No one has given me a gift that brought me to tears in a long time. Talk about thoughtful!

I just downloaded my first book. I can't wait to read it. It might even have an audio function and I can listen to it in the car but that's a long way off. I still have to learn how to navigate this thing!!

I am grateful for a lot of things in life. My children, their good health and my friends. Aren't I lucky to have ones like Dawn?

Pre-op testing

Thursday, December 15, 2011

I went for my pre-op tests today. Sheesh! You would think I was going to have a heart transplant and not bunion surgery. They had all kinds of tests including blood, urine, EKG etc....

Ok, apparently, I am well enough for them to operate on my little toe. I can't imagine what they would put me through if this were something truly serious!!

On a side note, I received the thumb brace with magnets I ordered. I have heard a lot about magnets helping with arthritis so, I thought I'd try it. I'll keep everyone posted on how it works (or if it works).

They put you through those test no matter what kind of surgery you are having. There are risks with all surguries. I know everything will be fine and you will be up running again very soon. Please keep us sparkers informed as to how you are doing. My prayers will be with you.
