Tracy has let me down! Tracy the treadmill has developed a fault and needs a new motor. The manufacturers are sending me a new motor (this will seriously test my skills with a screwdriver) but it is unlikely it will arrive for a couple of weeks.

So today I went for a walk outside - uphill and downhill - its the nature of where I live. It seemed ok at the time but now my knees hurt - one of them is slightly swollen and my ankles both hurt. This is mostly because I walk on the treadmill until just before things get painful and my judgement was not all it should be outside because I was some way from home when that feeling was reached. Oh well. Arnica, painkillers and ice will hopefully resolve the situation. Meanwhile I want my motor and I want it now!!


I am now scouring the spark pages and gleaning all information on painful knees. I found an excellent page on gentle exercises to improve the muscles around my knees, but I have to face facts. 88 kgs is too much force on these poor old joints and its all the more reason to lose some.
On the plus side my own resolve is stronger than ever to eat less and move more. How many calories will I burn if I just swing my arms about I wonder?

Its not the end of the world...

....but in a rush of self pity it feels like it. So I have been away from Sparkpeople for a couple of weeks. Week 1 I spent in UK where I had a very happy sociable time, vowing to do better the following week, but on my last day went down with a horrible cold and didnt feel like doing anything for a few days. I ate too much! So week 3 and I went skiing. Now that should have been enough to keep up my resolve but surrounded by friends again it all went pear shaped and yes I admit it, I ate lunches up the mountain and a hearty dinner thinking that because I was skiing in the cold I would be burning more than enough calories to compensate.

Well moment of truth this morning and stepping on the scales I see that I gained back just over a kilo. Felt so miserable. So now in the interest of accountability if only to myself, I own up... I had 2 glasses of mulled wine almost every afternoon. I ate dessert at lunch and at dinner. I had french fries more than once. I did not drink enough water (alcoholic drinks were flowing well though)

I did it, mea culpa, its all my own fault. So armed with this I am back on track. Determined to undo the bad and have walked for 80 minutes - 5.75 km and burned off a load of calories. I do feel better for doing something - it could so easily have gone the other way and I could have made a dash for the chocolate shop.

    Wow you only put on a kilo! I am not minimising how annoying and upsetting this is but considering what a great time you had and after what you said you ate, I think you did damn well!

A kilo is a minor blip - it's not like you gained 10lbs or a really huge amount of weight and given your new resolve and "I'll do it" attitude you will lose that mini little kilo in no time.
Savour your brilliant memories of what sounds like a great time.

Its Tracy the treadmill and if it were a person we would be joined at the hip. I'm so motivated and today I clocked up more than 10k on it. Now here is the problem - tomorrow I am travelling back to Blighty for some precious family time but will need to find a way to keep the up momentum. I will be training in the morning but I will then be away for 10 whole days.

So I have downloaded a walking plan, and am armed with a couple of DVD workouts and Lesley Sansone indoor walks as a backup plan should the weather do its worst. Still fired up with enthusiasm.

I am so looking forward to seeing my sons and their wives and my little grandsons. My younger son plays in a couple of bands and so I will be bopping around and burning calories for 2 gigs. Keep moving.

So its out there - I have let my family know what I am working towards! going back now.

I saw a very uplifting film recently. "The Way" with Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez. Basically its about the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route across northern Spain. 800 km of walking which most people do in one month. It made such an impression on me that I am aiming to do it this year in the autumn. Now I have never done anything like this. I have never even done a two day hike so I'm aiming high.

My preparations for this started last week, the excesses of Christmas were taking their toll, but I am determined to do this. I have my spangly new treadmill and ifit live and also the great outdoors - and its on my doorstep. I am today starting to read up about it and will start marking out the trails on google earth maps for my ifit live and the daily distances between night stops that I will need to do to complete the pilgrimage on time.

I will have a lot of support from my family - so - Ready with the legs? You bet!

    I am actually interested in the same pilgrimage, though I'll do it in 6 weeks I think since I am leaving from France and walking all the way down.

Weigh in today and what a great feeling it is to see that in one week I have dropped 1.4 kilos. This is after a week spent counting and accounting for my intake calories but to be truthful I have only had two days of adding workouts to my schedule. The disappointment of my treadmill not turning up for days made it difficult to start working out. But the "ready , set, go" gun has gone off in my head.
Today I managed my first Jillian Michaels ifit live session. Made a bit of a blunder because I started at level 3!! Now I am not yet a runner, have never been a runner and I was not so happy to be running at 7.2 speed or having the treadmill incline to 10%, so with a couple of adjustments along the way I completed it. I have changed the rest of my sessions to level 2 and hopefully that will be more manageable.
Its still very frosty outside so I used google maps and streetview and walked around my school town where my Aunt and Grandma used to live. Nostalgia reigned but it was so lovely to see the old places. Before I knew it I had walked for 53 minutes with some hills and burnt another 280 calories.

So chuffed.
