It's been awhile!

Saturday, September 21, 2013

I haven't been on here in about a year. I just want to say if you're wondering if this Spark People experience, hCG and now Sensa works I'm living proof it does... me and a huge number of other people.

You just have to want to make it work, apply yourself, be PATIENT... stay focused on your goals and don't give up!

I shared this on here before but I'll say it again. Several years ago I weighed in at over 300 pounds. I refused to go to my doctor because I didn't want his "lose weight" lecture. I was wearing 40 plus waist pants and XX shirts (tight), I couldn't walk any distance at all without sweating up a storm and sucking all of the oxygen out of the air and I constantly had to catch my breath. I couldn't reach my shoes to tie them so I bought "slip ons" but then I had to get a long handled shoe horn to put the darned things on. I couldn't see my toes unless I leaned forward a bit, I had no room in my pocket for my wallet (40 inch waist pants), I had to move the steering wheel up to drive, I drank alcohol like a fish (wine, whiskey, vodka... whatever was available)... I actually started to hate myself and everyone around me. I became an absolutely obnoxious, self pitying intolerable idiot.

I realized I had to do something about it or die a fat, lonely, grumpy young man. I set out on a course to change my life and was willing to do almost anything to make it happen. The first thing I knew I had to do was lose weight. I've tried that before but was never successful but I knew I had to do something this time. So, I just started going it alone. I didn't really report my weight to anyone else until I was at 297 pounds. That's when I finally lost enough to go to my doctor. He wasn't happy... wasn't happy at all. He told me I had to lose weight if I wanted to see life beyond 60 yrs. old. I didn't tell him I lost weight before I came to see him. I still haven't told him that.

After that meeting with my doctor... Dr. Michael Balfe, Group Health... the best out there! I promised myself I was going to get back into some semblance of shape and stay there.

Along came Spark People... twice... along came hCG... along came Sensa... along came healthy living and a fun life again. Of them all Spark People taught me the most and reminded me of what I already knew. It doesn't happen overnight! It takes hard work, dedication, desire, will and above all support! Even if the support means a note or two from people you've never met but interact with here on Spark People.

I achieved my goal weight a year or so ago primarily because of everyone here on Spark People. The continued guidance, support and interaction... the resources. I did do the hCG thing to lose some tough pounds but once those were off I jumped back into the Spark People meal tracking/calorie counting routine and kept it off, continuing to lose until I achieved several of my goals.

My work took me away from the site for awhile and when I thought it was safe to return I was challenged with balancing work and Spark People again (along with the many other things going on in my life).

In January, 2013 I realized a REAL need to give up alcohol altogether. I was not all that satisfied with my work/family life so I kept drinking myself into a stupor which normally resulted in passing out on the couch on a daily basis. I woke up one morning and my wife candidly told I'd become nothing more than a drunk who's totally unreliable and quite frankly disgusting. I had no argument with that. I knew what I'd become I just hadn't heard it from anyone else yet. I decided I was done with the booze. She wanted to get me "help" but I told her I got to this point myself I'll fix it myself... and so here I am, done with the booze.

I'm only sharing that little nugget of info in my life because I can't take credit for doing it on my own. I never could have taken on the alcohol beast without the help of Spark People and my family. Even though I didn't visit this site for a long time I still applied to the cessation of a horrible, self destructive, disgusting habit all of those positive, challenging, innovative and productive resources and habits instilled in me by all of you here on Spark People! My alcohol days are in the past. That's a given.

My whole life has changed.

Today I enjoy my days and nights living each day with more energy than the last and looking forward to the next one. I will always be a part of this Spark People community! I've regained my life... hell, I've reclaimed my life and want everyone to know it's within reach if you haven't already reclaimed yours.

These days I still apply the benefits of the Spark People meal planner (even though I might not log on to plan my meals out). I eat slowly, chew my food, eat wholesome foods, pause a lot while eating and stop when I feel I've had enough, not when I feel "full".

I've reset my goal weight from 225 pounds to 223 pounds today. Only because I've been bouncing between 223 and 228 pounds for the past 6 months or so. I figured if I set my goal weight lower (223) then I'll strive to achieve at least 223 pounds which will most likely get me even lower (220 pounds or even less).

Don't get me wrong, I'm very comfortable at this weight. I just think I can go a bit farther. besides, it's all become a mental "game" for me now... but it's also become a win-win situation.

Just thought I'd share what's been happening over the last couple of years.

As usual, thanks for being here everyone!

Dennis

That's an awesome journey! Just remember that it isn't about where you are but instead about where you are going. You seemed to have embraced the idea of challenging yourself to become a better you! You should be very proud of yourself, I'm sure your family is!

Wow what a journey! You are living proof never to give up on yourself! Congratulations on so many levels. Sounds like you are living life on life's terms and not medicating through it in unhealthy ways. Thank you for posting this because many of us "Sparkies" disappear for awhile and then reappear! (myself included!) It is refreshing to read you came back even healthier! (When I disappear it usually is because I am hiding in my cave!) You give me hope! and Inspiration!

A 204 Calorie breakfast...

Friday, June 10, 2011

Here's somewhat of a change to my blogs... I might just post a personal recipe from time to time.

Poached Egg Breakfast!

This is a simple, quick, nutritional, filling breakfast that's one of my favorites. The best part of the whole thing is that it's only 204 calories (including the coffee). The calories were calculated via SP's Nutrition Tracker.

Here's what it all consists of:

-1 AA egg, poached
-3 Slices Hillshire Farms honey ham (lunchmeat pack-5 per serving)
-1 Ostrom's mushroom, sliced
-1 serving (2 slices) of Oroweat "Light" 100% whole grain bread
-2 servings (10 sprays per) of I Can't Believe It's Not Butter spray. 10 per slice.
-4 leafs of fresh baby spinach
-1 tsp. yellow mustard
-1 tsp. Tapatio
-Salt substitute (dash)
-Ground black pepper
-3 small strawberries, sliced

In a non stick frying pan add about a half inch of water and a half tsp. of vinegar. Heat until bubbles form in the water on the bottom of the pan. DO NOT BOIL.

Add the egg and allow to cook.

While the egg is cooking toast the sliced bread, spray each with 10 sprays (1 serving each) of "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" (or equivalent). Place one slice of bread on a small plate, buttered side up. Apply some mustard to the piece of bread on the plate, add the spinach, sliced mushroom and slices of honey ham onto the bread and when the egg is cooked to your liking transfer it from the skillet to your piece of bread with the other ingredients on it. Let it sit for about three minutes to warm the ham, spinach and 'shrooms.

Slice the three strawberries and add it to the plate as a side. Season the egg with Tapatio, black pepper and salt substitute to taste (or your preferences, of course).

Serve with the other piece of toast and a cup of coffee.

It's excellent!

I've varied the ingredients in the past to include white onions, Kraft White American Cheese, Kraft Light American Cheese, Smoked Turkey slices, etc.

Either way the meal always seems to ring in between 200 and 300 calories.

What a way to start the day, eh?

Dennis

    Mornin' Dennis,

Your breakfast looks yummy!

I am in my new apartment, very crowded at the moment, still trying to find things. Now I remember why I like to pack things myself but I only had 13 days to make this move so I am grateful for my friends who pitched in and worked their behinds off right along with me. About half my furniture went to auction in Pe Ell when he has the next one. I still need to send more things and am still sorting, tossing and donating as well. I wish I wasn't such a packrat! I've dragged the same stuff along with me every move. Now it is time to shed the past and move forward, which is what I have been working on. My back has been complaining loudly so I haven't been able to do as much as I intended but am just doing a box or two at a time.

I love it here, centrally located in Chehalis just past Les Schwaub on Market. I can walk to all the stores and the downtown shops. The hills are a challenge but I will get used to them. It is 8 blocks to Safeway, three blocks to RiteAid, Ace Hardware and the Visiting Nurses. I have lost 7 pounds with this move and feel a lot better. Just by constantly moving and eating healthy foods. No Ice Cream for a month! LOL

I can now afford to have cable TV if I decide to hook it up. We get free wireless highspeed internet and I am estatic about that. The laundry room is on the first floor. I am on the third floor facing the hill with all the trees and foliage and the Boy Scout lodge just behind and to the side of our complex. There are 40 residents, mostly over 80 years old. So I have moved to the 'old folks' home. LOL As I was reading over my application, they have me down as 'elderly'. Wow, I never knew I was!! LOL

Have a good weekend.

Brenda

This here hCG thing!

Saturday, May 14, 2011

Well, I thought I'd post a blog to show my first two weeks results of the "Keeping Healthy", Phase 4 of the hCG plan. I'm over four weeks into it but the first two weeks I kept a running tab of my daily results. So, I thought I'd go ahead and post them. Keep in mind I was on the road for work and was staying at a motel for the better part of these 14 days. I lived off of restaurant food and sometimes I'd nuke up some food in the room via the microwave. I continued to work out every day. My workouts are fairly basic... 30 plus minutes of strength exercises, 30-60 minutes of treadmill. When I'm on the road and in one particular motel I'll use their recumbent bike and treadmill for a cobined total of 60 minutes.

Also, a point of qualification here... the "steps" and "minutes" recorded are copied from a pedometer I wear for approximately 16 hrs. daily. I've tested and retested the results over the years and have come to believe them simply because the results reflect any activity that could be construed as a "walking, running" activity or other physical activity that could be recorded as a walking or running activity (i.e. bicycling, cutting grass, stairs, recumbent bike, treadmill, etc.). I do not collect and record any other "body movement" data elsewhere. So it's my belief the pedometer is relatively accurate.

Here's the results for those who've been asking...

MY OVERVIEW OF THE hCG DIET:

I don't shop for clothes... I have my two sons (SIL and Son) "hand me down" their old jeans, etc. because the jeans are too big for them now. I went from a 38-40 waist down to a very loose 36 waist since February 3rd. I've lost over 30 pounds since February 3rd. and can stand to lose some more but I'll go there another time.

I saw my doctor back in December of 2010, well before I started the hCG plan. I was up to 255 pounds (actually, I was "down" to 255 pounds) and though he was happy that I'd dropped ten pounds over the past year he wanted to see more come off. I didn't even think about the hCG plan at that time. My wife, daughter and sons were doing it but I thought the whole idea was way to "dangerous" and besides, I felt if you're going to lose weight... truly lose weight and keep it off you have to do it the old fashioned way... hard work, eat the right things and take it off one pound at a time... much like I was doing since I woke up one morning weighing 2 pounds shy of 300 pounds. It took me over 2 years to get myself down from 297 (plus) pounds to the 250 (plus) pounds I was at back in December, 2010. I still wasn't in great shape though I was in good shape and had made pretty good progress to that point. Then I hit that 5 month plateau in September, 2010 that took all confidence away from me for awhile until I opted to do the hCG plan... if for no other reason but to expose it as the fraud and the dangerous diet everyone (including me) believed it was...

Since setting out on my "exposure journey" I've acquired a taste for crow... albeit with a teaspoon of Tapatio.

Little did I know all it did was change my overall attitude on life and my eating habits. I still have to do the physical exercises, etc... we all do! That's part of keeping a healthy existence. The hCG drops and the 500 VLCD (P1) just gave me a jump start on getting my weight down.

...and boy did it ever!

Again, thanks to Sandy and others I've been made aware of how to establish my "gain-maintain-lose" limits and have had ample time over the past couple of weeks to test those limits. So, I feel pretty good about going into the rest of my life armed with good healthy habits!

Anyways, long winded... sorry.

Dennis

Oh yeah, and for you lurking "Nay-Sayers"... step up and try the hCG out if you really want to get some ammo for your side. I'm pretty sure you'll end up converting over to the hCG way.

IT WORKS!

...as an aside I haven't been this healthy in a long, long time!

Current weight as of 05/14/2011- 226 pounds.

Good for you - sounds like you have learned a lot and have changed your life! I think the HCG is like any diet or exercise program in that if you do it, lose weight, and do not learn from it you will put the weight back on. Unlike any other program - and i have tried them all and have the bills to prove it - it actually works and taught me to be very aware of what I am putting in my body. Take care - I love reading your blogs...

Dennis, I love reading your blogs and am very happy to hear that your program worked with good results.

I am still not believing that I am moving because it sounds too good to be true but in the meantime I am sorting, donating and packing.. Of course I am having a hard time sticking to one task at a time, am like a cat on a hot tin roof jumping from one thing to another. I'm calling my friend that does auctions to find out what things sell the best. I have a lot of books among many other things.

Have a good weekend.

Go Dennis I'm so happy for you. I decided to do HCG when you were already on it and I was reading your blog while waiting for my viles. I'm sooooo happy I also lost 30lbs. The haters as I call them will always be there because the are so unhappy with themselves. We are proof that it works. So I'm glad you are still doing well and I'll be keeping up with you. Be encouraged and stay positive!

Phase 3 (Maintenance. Day 21 of 21): Friday, 04/15/11: FINAL DAY!

Saturday, April 16, 2011

Phase 3 (Maintenance. Day 21 of 21):
Friday, 04/15/11:

START: 0545 hrs.

Good morning. Hereís to another day in the books!

Weight this morning: 225.0 lbs. Iím even with yesterdayís weigh in of 225.0 lbs. but like yesterday Iím 5.0 pounds over my next goal. This is the WAKE UP! I was talking about earlier. Iím hereÖ Today is my last day of P3. Itís like Iím abandoning an old friend on a trail and going to get help or something. I know Iím going to be back, Iím just hoping my friend will be there and be okay when I do get back.

As noted before Iím riding right on a gain of 2 pounds so that gives me a four pound window to play with and gives me some real room for testing the waters during the lifestyle phase. Actually, it gives me a five pound window to mess around with if I include my goal weight and two pounds over/two pounds under. Iíve been served notice that my wifeís already planning a return to the protocol to lose some more so I guess Iím destined to tag along with her when the time comes. Until then Iím going to finish this here P3 stuff up (today) and march into the P4 (lifestyle) starting tomorrow morning. However, I donít anticipate too much of a difference between these two phases. Thanks to Sandyís little tip, if I keep my daily calorie intake between 1,600 and 1,800 and maintain my current level of ďconditioningĒ I should be holding steady at 222 lbs. - 226 lbs. At least, thatís what the ďprotocolĒ says. If I want to lose then I drop my daily calorie intake under 1,600 and maintain or even increase (a bit) my conditioning activity.

But, after today Iím not sure what I have in store re: this overall plan. I have some hints but nothing conclusive. Once again Iím just going to have to step in and test the waters to see where things go but I prefer that in a lot of ways.

I also mentioned I wonít be posting any more blogs relating to hCG after todayÖ well, not on a daily basis at least. Iím itching to share some normal, everyday information re: whatís happening throughout the state and am wanting to post some pics to the blog that bring pieces of our state to the reader from time to time so Iím thinking thatís going to be my focus in future postsÖ thanks for your support Brenda! Now where in the state do you want me to go and what would you want me to take pics of to bring back to the blog? If the job gets me close then Iíll take a brief side trip and git Ďer done!

I already have some interesting pics from the Curlew and Molson areas of the state. Theyíre courtesy of my last trip over to the east side. Iíll crop those up and post them on here soon. Iím also going to start re-posting to a family blog I started back in 2002 or so on blogspot. One of these days I might get a crazy hair and throw that url into my profile on SP so folks can wander over if they so desire.

Iím already contemplating re-posting some of the information re: hCG that I added here to that family blog so some of my relatives, friends and interested passerbyís can read, digest and decide whether or not to give it a try. Iíve mentioned on SP that both sides of my familyÖ my Momís and my DadísÖ come from pretty ďburlyĒ stock. So, weight maintenance is in order for most of us. They can do what they want with the infoÖ Iím contemplating just throwing it out to them so they can see through the ďnay sayerĒ crap.

I will post one more blog re: hCG that will hopefully sum it all up from my perspective. Remember, I was a borderline ďnay-sayerĒ myself coming into this. And I messed and messed, tinkered and tinkered, dabbed, tested, tweaked, confused, pushed the limits of the protocol and all that went with it. Throughout the entire period I maintained my physical fitness routine.

Okay, Iím really long winded here so Iím saving the rest for laterÖ Thanks again for joining me on this adventure!

Alright, hereís to wrapping up the last day of this regimented plan. Now Iím on my ownÖ kinda.

Iím going to write a final after action review of the hCG experience and post it to the blog in the next week or two. I really think thereís some things that should be addressed, especially for those who are curious about the program but arenít sure about some things. Hopefully I can fill in some blanks and enlighten a few re: what I thought and what I now know and believe.

Have a great night everyone! Good night, take care.

    Hi Dennis,

I have really enjoyed sharing your adventure with you and I know you will succeed with the maintanence part.

As far as any special place for you to take pictures of--it doesn't matter because every place in our state is beautiful. I just enjoy reading about your trips and looking at the pictures.

Wishing you and your family a very happy Easter! A few of us are getting together in the small dining room downstairs for dinner tomorrow afternoon. Judy is cooking and ham and I am taking a green salad and whole wheat dinner rolls but I don't know what else is on the menu. It will be good whatever it is.

Phase 3 (Maintenance. Day 20 of 21): Thursday, 04/14/11:

Phase 3 (Maintenance. Day 20 of 21):
Thursday, 04/14/11:

START: 0545 hrs.

Good morning. Iím writing one more day down!

Weight this morning: 225.0 lbs. Iím down 1 lb. from yesterdayís weigh in of 226.0 lbs. but Iím 5.0 pounds over my next goal. Tomorrow is my last day for the P3. I have to keep reminding myself that I donít want weight loss or gain beyond 2 pounds in this phase. If I do then I correct it. I also learned a lesson from 2BFREE2LIVE (Sandy) relating to my calorie ďtolerancesĒ. If I eat more than 1,800 calories a day and maintain my current level of physical activity my weight increases. If I eat less than 1,600 calories a day and maintain my current level of physical activity my weight decreases. So, I maintain my weight by consuming between 1,600 and 1,800 calories per day. right now Iím riding right on a gain of 1 pound on the heavy side overall so that still gives me that four pound window to play withÖ again, like I said yesterday that gives me more room for tinkering. LOL.

I got a good treadmill walk in yesterday and have been getting my strength training in each morning for ďcountlessĒ days now so Iím feeling pretty good. Besides, today I have an appointment with my Doctor. Itís the first doctorís visit since December of 2010, before I started this whole hCG plan. I was still on that 5 month, 250 lb. plateau back then.

This is going to be an interesting visit.

Total steps today: 17,780. Roughly 10.1 miles/3.2+ hours of total walking or equivalent activity for the day. (192 minutes)

Another day down. Iím tired today though. The doctor was very pleased but still wanted to run some tests ďjust in caseĒ so Iíll be doing some things over the next couple of weeks to see what shakes out medically. My blood pressure was 130/65 when he took it.

Iím going to take my walk on the treadmill then shower and call it a night.

Thanks,

Dennis

I feel the same way about the diet. I started very skeptical but on the desperate side. I had tried everything but I just couldn't seem to lose anything. I was battling daily migraines that were so severe that I was on a first name basis with the ER personnel. I was depressed and miserable.

I just knew that this diet would put me worse off than where I was but I had to try. And after that first week my migraines jsut went away! So my story is a little different than yours b/c I found out that I'm severly alergic to MSG. The weight fell off me and EXACLTY a year later I sit here and I'm still at 1 lb over my lowest weight! Now that's amazing, especially for someone who yo-yo'ed for 15 years.

Those threads that say "come back and talk when you prove you can keep it off"....well guess what, I'M BACK!!!

I hope you have the same story in a year.
