Scary Border Guards

Wednesday, August 08, 2012

I don't know about anyone else but I always get a little queasy when I cross the border. I've done nothing wrong but the border guards (both ways) always make me feel like I've committed some type of crime. We realized that we get grilled harder when we cross together. I'm not sure exactly why but it might be a mix of factors...I have a US passport and his is Canadian, we're different races and I'm quite a bit older than him. Maybe they think I'm trying to sneak him in. emoticon

Not too long after we got married we took a road trip to visit my family in Georgia. He was going to stay a week and fly home and I was going to stay a bit longer. When we got to the US border, the guard gave us a hard time until we showed him my husband's plane ticket back home. I wonder what would have happened if we didn't have that "proof"?

I know it's their job to keep us safe but do they have to be so cranky while doing it?

Anybody know a guard personally? Are they not allowed to smile, be pleasant and thorough at the same time? I'm from the South and used to people being overly polite and friendly. Maybe I'm reading more into it than I should.

Just my thoughts...
Rach

Being from the South, I totally hear ya.
I have only been to Canada 2x for vacation and at Customs felt the same way. Then another time we drove from NY side of Niagara Falls to Canadian side we were just going and coming right back over, and boy do they give you a hard time BOTH directions. Oh well, we are just as polite and as nice as can be. We take it as it is just their jobs.

Nasty PMS Binging...Yikes!

emoticon emoticon

So yesterday my husband and I jumped the border and visited Bellingham, WA. Not the most glamorous place but they have Ross, Marshall's, Lane Bryant, Target and Trader Joe's. Vancouver has none of these. We'll be getting Target soon so I'm super excited about that!

Anyway, they also have a restaurant in that mall called Old Country Buffet. This was sooo not my idea! I actually did pretty well there considering the quantity of food I used to put away. My first achievement was drinking water instead of hitting the Icee machine. Then I filled my small plate with a piece of roasted chicken and removed the skin, a small piece of fish, green beans and corn. The veggies looked like they were just in water so no butter to worry about. I'm pretty sure the fish was in butter so I dabbed it with my napkin. I think my husband was slightly embarrassed by this but smartly kept it to himself, lol. The second go round was a taco shell with a small amount of ground beef, a speck of cheese, olives, and lettuce. This wasn't very good and quite greasy so I wasn't happy with this choice. Moving on to dessert. I was pretty good here too. I got a tiny plate, a little bigger than a cup saucer and put a bite size piece of about four different desserts. I only wanted one bite of each just to taste them. The very last thing I ate was about half a tiny bowl of banana pudding. Banana pudding is my favorite so it was really hard to push the rest of the bowl away. My husband got this one for me or there would have been a smaller amount to begin with. Done! I actually got through a buffet without going crazy. Unfortunately this was just the beginning of the day...

We shopped for a while and then headed home to beat the evening traffic at the border.

On the drive home all was well for a while but then I got sushi on the brain emoticon and decided I would absolutely die if I didn't have a California roll for dinner. We headed toward Metrotown (our mall) and my husband suggested a movie. We decided on Total Recall (pretty good) and were about to go in when he remembered he had to have his candy fix. There is a wonderful candy store only an escalator ride away. I thought about it and decided I could get just a few pieces of my favorite candy instead of a huge bag like I normally do. I got five pieces of strawberry bonbon sugar candy. My favorite.

By the time we got back upstairs my mind started to fixate on popcorn. You know, I can't just have any old popcorn...it has to be movie theater and it has to have butter. I thought about it for a few minutes in line and then said I'll only have a little bit. Soooo, I had a few handfuls of buttered popcorn and a couple sips of my husband's drink.

Once the movie was over it was time for dinner. It was sushi time! I swear I missed half the movie daydreaming about that roll, lol.

We get to the sushi place and I order a small bowl of miso soup and one large california roll and water. It was very good and I finished it in no time flat. After we were done we looked at each other and seriously contemplated splitting another roll. I just couldn't decide so my husband made the executive decision to pay the bill and then go play some video games. Ok, small disaster avoided.

We paid the nice lady and then went across the way to the arcade and I watched my husband play a few games. A little back story...when I moved up here I came across some tokens mixed in with some change in a junk drawer of his and put them in my purse thinking we might go to the arcade one day while waiting for a movie. I'm a Girl Scout at heart and I'm usually prepared for just about anything. My purse is huge and heavy because of it, lol. Anyway, we were there a while and then I remembered there was a pizza place that we had to walk by to get to the elevator. That's all it took for my brain to decide that I neeeeeded a slice of pizza, just had to have it. I restrained myself (ha!) and only got once slice of cheese and pesto. Very good stuff. Wow, I knew I ate a lot but it really seems like a lot when I type it. emoticon

It's a sad fact but during the last few days of PMS I really am a bottomless pit. I truly feel no sense of fullness or satiety and once I get fixated on something there is no stopping me.

All in all I really didn't do as badly as I could have. Normally I would have eaten all of that on a much much larger scale.

I've decided not to beat myself up about it and figure that if I go crazy one or two days a month it isn't the end of the world. My goal is to make positive changes and stick with them for the long haul, not deprive myself so much that I give up. I know I have to take it one day at a time and remember that I'm not perfect. I started over today with some cherries and tuna salad with crispbread. My husband agreed to walk the 5k trail with me the rest of the week (4 more days til next weigh in). Maybe I can at least maintain my current weight and not gain.

Anybody have any tricks they use to combat PMS cravings? I'd love to hear (see) them.

Until next time...
Rach

Sounds like you made some wise choices and put limits on what could have been an out of control eating day! emoticon

Trying to get my hormones in control also. Supplementing with Dim a derivative of broccoli-family that enhances the way our bodies metabolize and process estrogen and other hormones. (the hunter/farmer diet solution) Also eating 7 - 200 calories meals a day to combat raging hormones lol.

I happen to be PMSing myself. Not fun but walking also seems to help. Rooting for you, best wishes!!!

Week 2 Progress Report! Another 3.2 pounds banished.

Sunday, August 05, 2012

Hi all,

Weekly progress report: Week 2

Very excited! I lost another 3.2 lbs this week. Yes I know it isn't healthy to lose more than two pounds a week and my losses will slow down. At this point I'm just going with it. I figure I'm still in the learning phase and have to find out what works for me.

Still walking the 5k trail but not as many times as I wanted. I started the Coach Nicole Bootcamp video emoticon but somehow got derailed and only completed the first workout day. This week I'll focus on getting back to that. It's pretty hot outside so it's hard to get my husband motivated to go walk with me in the evening. I find that if I try to tackle that much walking alone It just isn't as enjoyable and I'm more likely to skip most of it, lol.

Still drinking plenty of water and really trying to make all of my meals balanced. I continue to struggle with breakfast. Some of you mentioned smoothies and I'd like to get back to making those. I used to make a green smoothie with almond milk, spinach, yogurt, banana and whatever frozen fruit I had on hand. I loved it but to be honest I really hate to have to use the bathroom constantly from all of the liquid.

I've had a few non scale victories as well. I noticed that my shorts are fitting much better and my stomach seems to have deflated a little bit. I'll measure myself again in a couple weeks to see how many inches I've lost.

Thank you again for all of your support. I really couldn't do this without you.

See you next week!
Rach

Day 1 of Coach Nicole's 28 Day Bootcamp

Wednesday, August 01, 2012

Day 11 of My Journey

Wooh I'm sweaty.

I am absolutely the stereotypical uncoordinated white girl, lol. I can't even do a basic grapevine or mambo. I just kinda move my feet around and call it done. I couldn't find the "uncoordinated white girl" emoticon so I'll use these two as motivation. emoticon emoticon

Ok, so I started Coach Nicole's 28 Day Bootcamp dvd today. Nicole really kicked my butt with this one. I decided to do the 28 day plan instead of my own mixing and matching and started with the Day 1 workout 22 min Cardio Blast.

I swear, the warm up felt like a workout to me, lol. During the actual workout itself you have to do some boxing moves and I tried really hard...I did. I was jab, cross, hook and holding the best I could but ended up just flailing my arms around. I'm still proud of myself, at least I did that much. I should really take some footage of this and send it to America's Funniest Home Videos...I'm sure I could win some money, lol.

Alright, enough of that. I really am feeling good and motivated to do the second workout in the series tomorrow. Wish me luck! emoticon

Who cares what it looks like? The main thing is that you get off the couch and start exercising so you can become a healthier, slimmer and more energetic version of you. I am not going to say that you can do it - you ARE doing it!

    Kick it!

Coordination is something that you can train, though a lot is innate, but it's also something that gets better as your muscles get stronger and you have more control over them! So...it gets better! :-)

Not enough calories!

Wednesday, August 01, 2012

Huh,

I'm finding that since I cut out fast food I'm having a hard time eating my daily calorie allotment. I know that cutting out breakfast is a big part of that. I've never been a breakfast eater and actually get sick to my stomach when I try to eat in the morning.

I would eat a small lunch and be famished by dinner. Most nights I would be too hungry to think so we would just order pizza, Chinese or go hit a favorite restaurant or fast food joint. This would not be pretty. Since my blood sugar was so low I would order much more food than necessary. For some reason I had it in my head that I better get a lot because it might not fill me up. I gravitated toward anything high carb that would make me feel stuffed and give me the warm fuzzy feeling. On the days I would cook they weren't fatty meals but we would get hungry later and go out for donuts or ice cream thereby ruining anything positive we at at dinner.

Now that I cook almost every day I make healthy recipes and don't eat huge portions. I've incorporated good fats into my diet like nuts and have always eaten lots of fruit. Right now our favorite fruit is cherries. They are only $1.99 a pound and so I keep the fridge stocked. My plan is to buy several pounds and freeze them so I can enjoy them when they go back up sky high to around $6 a pound. I also eat the other fruit in season like peaches and nectarines.

Yesterday I bought some instant oatmeal and my goal this week is to eat breakfast at least 4 times. Wish me luck, I'm gonna need it.

Until next time...
Rach

Like others have said, starting out your day with protein is a really good idea and will probably help your weight loss efforts. Try getting some good protein powder and starting the day out with a shake if you have a hard time eating anything.

Congratulations on your progress so far. emoticon

I like Special K protein shakes or oatmeal for breakfast or a chobani yogurt. Maybe try some fruit since you know you already like that just to get your body used to eating early. I definitely notice a difference in results when I eat breakfast.

Breakfast is a biggie. I too hate eating right away so I usually make myself a smoothie or an egg sandwich to eat at work ((wake up at 5 and end up eating around 9!). Lots of protein to keep me full! Plus it's another chance to get more veggies in! I put spinach in my chocolate peanut butter smoothies and I put tons of veggies in my egg sandwiches.

Try adding some more protein to your breakfast to keep you fuller - instant oatmeal will spike your insulin and you might find yourself dragging an hour after you eat it. You can add some almond butter or peanut butter or protein powder to up the protein.

Breakfast smoothies are good idea. You can sip on it over a long period and hopefully not get that upset tummy. You could also have some toast and a yogurt for a light, easy meal. Lood guck.

I like doing a breakfast smoothie. I can take it on the run and it feels like drinking instead of eating. I do a frozen banana, a tablespoon of peanut butter, a half cup of greek yogurt, and then whatever fruits/flavors I feel like. Sometimes the mixes aren't as good as others, but it's always filling and never makes me feel sick to my stomach!

Breakfast is a really, really good idea. I taught myself to eat breakfast by starting with a glass of milk. I couldn't do OJ in the morning because it's too acidic. From there I moved up to a banana (*gasp!*) and then microwaved oatmeal with bananas. Just enough to get the metabolism going.

When I'm having trouble eating enough (or when I forget food) I have an emergency stash of cashews at my desk at work. We have a toaster oven in the kitchen, so I grab some foil and measure out 1/4 cup of cashews and toast them for a few minutes. Delicious snack, healthy, and filling when you need it :)

Good luck!
