WILLOW'S CROSS STITCH

Monday, December 02, 2013

IT SEEMS HARD TO BELIEVE BUT MY LABOUR OF LOVE FOR MY YOUNGEST GRAND DAUGHTER IS FINALLY FINISHED AFTER 2 YEARS.

I HAD BEEN GIVEN THIS KIT NEARLY 10 YEARS BY A FRIEND HOWEVER MY HANDS WERE SO BAD I COULDN'T DO IT. I WOULD DRAG IT OUT AND DREAM OF THE DAY THAT I COULD ACTUALLY GET STARTED ON IT. IN THE MEAN TIME I WORKED ON ONE ON MUCH LARGER AIDA CLOTH. WILLOWS IS ON AN UNEVEN LINEN AND EITHER 32 OR 36 STITCHES TO THE INCH. WILLOW WAS BORN IN 2008 AND IN 2011 I WAS PLACED ON A HUGE DOSE OF PREDNISONE AND WITH IN 24 HOURS I COULD USE MY HANDS. I HAD THE CROSS STITCH OUT AND WILLOW SAW IT. HER FAVORITE COLOUR IS GREEN AND SHE BECAME SO EXCITED I DECIDED THEN AND THERE I WAS GOING TO GET STARTED AND DO IT FOR HER.

SHE HAS FOLLOWED THE PROCESS WITH GREAT DILIGENCE AND IF SHE CAME OVER AND I WASN'T WORKING ON IT SHE WOULD SAY " OMA DON'T YOU THINK YOU SHOULD BE STITCHING IF YOU WANT TO GET THIS DONE?" SHE WAS ALWAYS SO VERY POSITIVE ABOUT WHAT A GREAT JOB I WAS DOING AND HOW BEAUTIFUL THE DOLL LOOKED.

RECENTLY MY SYMPTOMS HAVE BEEN WORSE AND MY EYES HAVE BEEN AFFECTED AGAIN SO TRYING TO SEE THE FINE FABRIC HAS BEEN A REAL CHALLENGE BUT WILLOW HAS ALWAYS BEEN THERE ENCOURAGING AND NEVER SEEING THE MISTAKES ONLY HER " BEAUTIFUL DOLL" . SHE RECENTLY TOLD HER MOM I AM THE BEST BECAUSE I AM STITCHING HER THE MOST BEAUTIFUL DOLL IN THE WORLD

WILLOW MY LOVE THIS IS FOR YOU. THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGEMENT

LOVE OMA

KIDS SAY THE DARNDEST THINGS

Saturday, September 29, 2012

YESTERDAY WHILE WE WERE DRIVING BACK FROM TOWN MY GRANDSON BEN CALLED HIS MOM BY HER NAME KELLY. MY HUSBAND LEN SAID " BEN YOU SHOULD CALL HER MOM". I THEN SAID THAT I THOUGH THEY NEEDED TO KNOW THEIR PARENTS NAMES BECAUSE WHAT IF THEY EVER GOT LOST THEY HAD TO KNOW WHO THEIR PARENTS WERE. ANYWAY WE STARTED ASKING THE KIDS WHAT THEIR NAMES WERE, WHAT DADDY'S NAME WAS, AND OF COURSE OPA'S NAME. I THEN SAID TO BEN AND "WHAT IS MY NAME?" AT FIRST HE DIDN'T ANSWER SO I SAID "BEN WHAT DOES OPA CALL ME?"
TO WHICH HE QUICKLY REPLIED "DINGALING" . NEEDLESS TO SAY THAT WE LAUGHED SO HARD THERE WASN'T A DRY EYE IN THE PLACE.

THE BIRDS OF PREY IN COALDALE ALBERTA

Thursday, August 30, 2012

ON WEDNESDAY WE DROVE OUT TO LETHBRIDGE TO VISIT LEN'S 91 YEAR OLD AUNT AND TAKE HER ALONG WITH MY FRIEND BIRTHE TO THE BIRDS OF PREY IN COALDALE WHICH IS JUST 15 MINUTES WEST. THEY RESCUE BIRDS AS WELL AS HAVE A BREEDING PROGRAM FOR BURROWING OWLS. THEY ARE DOING VERY WELL WITH THAT PROGRAM AND HAVE BEEN ABLE TO RELEASE A LOT TO THE WILD.

WHEN WE ENTERED THE BUILDING WE WERE GREETED BY BASIL A THREE MONTH OLD BURROWING OWL. BOY DID HE HAVE PERSONALITY. THEN WE GOT TO SEE ANOTHER LITTLE ONE WHO DOESN'T HAVE A NAME YET AND HE WAS ONLY 3 WEEKS. HE WAS DOWN IN A TUB AND DUE TO MY DECREASED MOBILITY WAS HARD TO GET DOWN TO GET A PICTURE BUT I TRIED.

THEY HAD TWO FLY BYES WHILE WE WERE THERE THE FIRST WAS A HARRIS HAWK
I AM NOT SURE IF YOU CAN SEE IT BUT SHE HAS LITTLE BITS OF CHICKEN IN HER GLOVE AND OF COURSE THAT IS WHY THE HAWK COMES BACK. HE FLIES 4 TIMES TO DIFFERENT PERCHES. SHE SAID THEY HAVE TO KEEP THEM HUNGRY ENOUGH TO FLY OTHERWISE THEY WOULD JUST KEEP ON GONG.

THE SECOND ONE WAS A BALD EAGLE. THEY ARE SUCH MAJESTIC BIRDS I LOVE THEM. YOU DON'T GET TO APPRECIATE THE SIZE TIL YOU GET TO SEE ONE UP CLOSE.

I GOT A FEW SHORT VIDEOS AND WILLTRY TO SEE IF I CAN DO A VIDEO BLOG BUT NOT SURE IF I CAN.

WE VISITED THE EAGLE ENCLOSURE GOT SOME GREAT VIDEO OF THEM HAVING SHOWERS AS IT WAS 32 CELCIUS AND THEY HAD TO COOL THEM DOWN

THE OWL ENCLOSURE WAS REALLY NEAT TOO.

LEN GIVING ONE OF THE BIRDS A SHOWER

WE ALL GOT TO HOLD A BURROWING OWL. WE COULD HAVE HELD A BARN OWL HOWEVER FELT IT MIGHT BE TO BIG FOR MY AUNT. YOU WILL NOTICE MAYBE THAT THE FRONT OF MY SHIRT IS WET. I WAS SO HOT I KEPT GOING INTO THE WASHROOM AND POURING WATER OVER MY HEAD AND DOWN THE FRONT OF MY SHIRT. A GIRLS GOT TO DO WHAT A GIRLS GOT TO DO. LEN'S AUNT NEL HOLDING THE OWL WE THEN WENT AND FEED THE GEESE. TANTE NEL ( AUNT NEL) ENJOYED THE OTHER BIRDS MORE AS THEY WERE MUCH QUIETER THAN THE GEESE AND I HAD TO AGREE. THESE LAST FEW PICTURES JUST SHOW SOME OF THE GROUNDS. IT HAS REALLY CHANGED SINCE WE WERE THERE 8 YEARS AGO.

I HOPE YOU ENJOY THE PICTURES.

MARV'S CLASSIC SODA SHOP IN BLACK DIAMOND ALBERTA

Monday, July 30, 2012

IN MY LAST BLOG WE WENT TO THE DANISH CULTURAL CENTER AND THEY GAVE US THE ADDRESS FOR THE BAKERY IN BLACK DIAMOND WHERE THEY BUY ALL THEIR BAKING SO THAT WAS THE NEXT PLACE WE HAD TO VISIT. WE LEFT THERE WITH OUR ARMS LOADED WITH BREADS AND COOKIES, SQUARES, AND PROMISES OF "NEXT TIME WE ARE BRINGING THE COOLER AND FREEZER PACKS. ON OUR WAY BACK TO THE CAR WE PASSED MARV'S CLASSIC SODA SHOP . THEY HAD A SIGN IN THE WINDOW SAYING THEY HAD LOTS OF OLD LICENCE PLATES SO LEN DECIDED HE WAS GOING TO HAVE A PEEK AND I WENT TO WAIT IN THE CAR. BIRTHE WENT TO SEE WHAT LEN WAS UP TO AND CAME BACK AND SAID " JEANETTE YOU HAVE TO COME SEE THIS PLACE"

WHEN YOU WALKED THROUGH THE DOOR YOU WENT BACK INTO THE 1950'S AND I MUST ADMIT I REMEMBER THAT ERA VERY EASILY. THESE BOOTHS ARE THE FIRST THING THAT CATCH YOUR EYE WHEN YOU WALK IN AND THEY ALSO HAVE THE STOOLS ALONG THE COUNTER AS WELL AS A TALL COUNTER WITH MORE STOOLS.

MEMORABILIA IS EVERYWHERE .

THE ONE WALL IS COVERED WITH OLD FASHIONED CANDIES.
AS A KID I USED TO BUY 10 LITTLE JAW BREAKERS FOR A PENNY ONLY NOW THEY ARE $2.99 FOR 100 GRAMS.

NOW IF YOU WANTED TO BUY SOME CLOTHES THAT WAS EASY AS THEY SOLD THOSE TOO.
THEY EVEN HAD THE LITTLE HORNED RIMMED GLASSES WITH THE LITTLE RHINESTONES IN THEM.

THE EQUIPMENT HE USES IS FROM THEN AS WELL AND WE MUST NOT FORGET THE LICENCE PLATES BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT BROUGHT US IN IN THE FIRST PLACE.

OH I ALMOST FORGOT WHILE THERE WE LEARNED HE HAS A ROCK AND ROLL PARTY EVERY YEAR AND THAT WAS GOING TO BE ON JULY 29TH SO YOU KNOW WHERE I WAS YESTERDAY BUT THAT IS NOW TOMORROW'S BLOG.

THE DANISH CULTURAL CENTER IN DICKSON ALBERTA

Sunday, July 22, 2012

I HAVE ACTUALLY BLOGGED OUR THREE DAY TRIP IN REVERSE ORDER AS WANTED EVERYONE TO SEE SHERRY. THIS WAS THE FIRST DAY OF OUR TRIP. YOU ALL KNOW HOW MANY TIMES YOU DRIVE DOWN THE HIGHWAY AND SEE SIGNS SHOWING VARIOUS ATTRACTIONS AND SAY TO YOURSELF I AM GOING TOSTOP ONE OF THESE DAYS AND CHECK THAT PLACE OUT. WELL THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT WE HAD DECIDED TO DO WHILE MY GIRLFRIEND WAS HERE. SEE NEW PLACES.

BIRTHE WAS BORN IN DENMARK SO SHE HAD ALWAYS WANTED TO GO HERE AND NEVER MADE IT. AS IT WAS ON THE WAY TO EDMONTON IT WAS ALSO OUR FIRST STOP OF THE DAY

ONCE WE GOT THROUGH THE GATE WE WERE GREETED BY THESE AMAZING GROUNDS. WE FIRST WENT TO CHECK OUT THE BUILDING IT CONTAINED A GIFTSHOP, A RESTAURANT AND UPSTAIRS WAS A MUSEUM WHICH OF COURSE I NEVER GOT TO CHECK OUT. THE BLUE PART OF THE BUILDING HAD ORIGINALLY BEEN A BOARDING SCHOOL FOR THE KIDS IN THE AREA ATTENDING HIGH SCHOOL. THE UPSTAIRS HAD BEEN THE DORMATORY WITH THE CLASSROOMS BEING ON THE MAIN FLOOR. THE WALLS OF THE RESTAURANT WERE COVERED WITH CROSS STITCH PICTURES BUT IT WASN'T UNTIL LATER THAT I REALIZED I HAD BEEN SO BUSY LOOKING I HADN'T TAKEN ONE PICTURE AND THE GIRLS WOULD HAVE LIKE THEM I AM SURE. WE CHECKED OUT THE MENU AND DECIDED WE WERE DEFINITELY HAVING LUNCH HERE THEN SET OUT TO EXPLORE. LEN AND BIRTHE WENT FOR A LONG WALK WHILE I STAYED CLOSE TO THE FLAT AREA.
A STATUE OF THE MERMAID SITS IN THE POND AND LEADING TO IT IS A LOVELY PATH CONTAINING NAMES OF PEOPLE WHO HAD PASSED AWAY. BIRTHE IS GOING TO TALK TO HER SIBLINGS ABOUT THIS AS SHE THINKS HER PARENTS WOULD HAVE REALLY LIKED THIS. LEN AND BIRTHE WALKED TOWARDS THE CHURCH AND OFF INTO THE FOREST ON THE OTHERSIDE. THEY CROSSED THIS LOVELY LITTLE BRIDGE.
IN THE CHURCH THERE WAS PAN FLUTE MUSIC PLAYING AND YOU COULD ALSO PULL THE BELLCORD AND RING THE CHURCH BELL.

A VIKING SHIP WAS SET UP IN A TENT.
THEY HAD LARGE WRITEUPS ON HOW EVERYTHING WAS DONE TO BUILD THE SHIP AND SAIL BUT COULDN'T GET CLOSE ENOUGH TO GET GOOD PICTURES.

FROM HERE I WANDERED OFF INTO THE CHILDREN'S IMAGINATION GARDEN
A STATUE OF HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSON IS A MUST.
THE LITTLE CABIN CONTAINED A KITCHEN COMPLETE WITH POTS AND DISHES SO THE KIDS COULD MAKE A PRETEND MEALTHE SIT DOWN AND EAT IT.

I WANDERED A LITTLE FARTHER INTO THE WOODS AND SERRLED ON MY WALKER TO BE TREATED TO A FABULOUS CONCERT OF BIRDS SINGING, BEES BUZZING AND A KINE WOODPECKER TAPPING AWAY IN SEARCH OF LUNCH. OH HOW I WISHED MY FRIENDS FROM SPARKS COULD HAVE BEEN THERE TO ENJOY THIS. WE ARE SO INVOLVED IN OUR HUSTLE BUSTLE ACTIVE LIVES THAT TO JUST SIT AND ENJOY THE QUIETNESS OF NATURE IS INDEED A SPECIALTREAT. I WAS FASCINATED BY THE FUNGUS GROWTHS ON THE TREES THEY LOOKED LIKE STEPS LEADING TO THE TOP OF THE TREE

I WANDERED BACK TOWARDS THE MAIN BUILDING AND CHECKED OUT THE GARDEN I WISH NOW I HAD TAKEN PICTURES OF THE BEAUTIFUL FLOWER BEDS AS WELL AS THEIR GREAT VEGETABLE GARDEN. WE HAD LOVELY LUNCH AND BIRTHE GOT TO EAT SOME OF HER NATIVE FOODS. WE WILL DEFINITELY GO BACK.
