The power to choose

Sunday, January 30, 2011

Standing in line at the grocery store, a treat at eye-level nearly enticed me. I actually put it on the conveyor belt; then I picked it up again and read the calories and carbs. 360 calories, plus a meal's worth of carbs.

With God's help I had the thought, "I have the power not to eat this. I can walk away." I snatched it and thrust it away from me fast, as if it were poison. I thought of something nutritious that I could eat as soon as I got home (not far).

I had read the quote recently "You have the power to choose," and it stuck in my head. Maybe it will come to your mind again at a vulnerable time. You have the power at this moment to make a healthy choice!

Over time exercising our choice becomes easier.
You are correct, it is our choice.

Very inspiring! I'm trying to remember that too. This week, I dished out ice cream for the kids, but none for myself. I stuck to it!

If it Ain't Broke . . . Hooray!

Friday, January 28, 2011

My pre-teen daughter knows when she's hungry and when she's not. She eats when she's hungry, she stops when she's satisfied, and she doesn't eat when she's not hungry. Thanks be to God!

When I came in from an appointment, she needed something at the mall and we scooted over there before I realized I hadn't had lunch. After walking a while I was very hungry and was looking for some economical protein. (I hadn't replaced the contingency protein bar I usually keep in my purse.)

"I'm thinking of some chicken, honey--do you want something?"
"No thanks, Mom. I'm not hungry."

When have I ever turned down an offer of food on an outing? Whew!

Although I've noticed that she stops eating when she's had enough, this was such a vivid contrast to my gotta-have-something-yummy hang-ups, it made a dramatic impression on me.

To her I simply said okay. Inside I was dancing and giving thanks to God. It ain't broke! Her appetite system works naturally, normally, simply! What a beautiful thing!

I do think I am in appetite rehab, using Beck Diet Solution's sensible approach. I have great optimism about re-educating my own inclinations and responses!

That's wonderful that your daughter hasn't picked up your habits. Most of the time I can tell when I'm really hungry now -- but it took lots of years & lots of practice to get to this point. And there are still times, of course, like when I'm really tired, that it's still broken.

    How wonderful!
Sometimes it is our children that help us see.
Wouldn't it be nice to go back to before it was broke. Alas do-overs are not available, so our choices for the present. Using food to satisfy hunger, instead of for pleasure... what a concept! I should ask myself if I am hungry.
Thanks for sharing about your daughter. It has helped me reframe my thinking.

Isn't that something when the opportunity arises that we learn from our children? It's very hard to find anything healthy at the food court in the mall and the smells can undermine the best of intentions. Subway is about the only safe haven I have found there.

By the way, it is nice that you are here with us.

Tiptoe Toward Reality

Tuesday, January 25, 2011

I told two more people that I had gotten way off track and had decided to get serious about healthy eating again.

It makes me laugh, thinking of how hard it was for me to verbalize that to a friend. Seriously, I've been walking around in public carrying a couple dozen pounds that used to be gone! It's not as if my relapse could be some kind of secret!

Funny (and tragic) how we operate as if refusing to face something will make it less true . . . or less detrimental.

God's mercies are new every morning . . . or for me, new every moment. As Judith Beck says, I can start over right this minute!

I always feel that first step back to reality is just owning what's happening, no matter how hard that may be. Welcome back!

I'm right there with you. I lost 20 pounds and put it all back on. So, here I go, a little slower this time. Thank you for choosing our team to be accountable to. Thank you for holding me accountable. Together, we can get our temples ready to serve the Lord with our full potential once again. Can't wait to see what this year holds in store for us.

You'll be stepping lighter now that you've shed some of that worry. You are back at it now and that's what matters most. This is a good time of year to focus on yourself as not much else goes on in Feb. and March. So here's a cheer for you taking care of you.

You are right every moment is a new opportunity.

We are both starting over!! I spent the last six months gaining 11 pounds that I had lost last year but we can fix it with God's help and strength. I'm just glad I caught it in time before I gained back the whole 30. Great Job! Let's keep it up and before long we'll be losing new weight again. emoticon emoticon

Step on the Scale, Step away from Denial

Tuesday, January 04, 2011

I haven't been weighing myself for several months. This is where I've been . . .
Today I weighed myself for the third time in a couple weeks. It wasn't fun, but I knew I had to do it in order to keep moving toward my goals.

If I keep planning my food and telling myself true truth, I will regain the ground I backslid and keep moving forward.

P.S. In case I'm being confusing, the photo is Da Nile, the river in Egypt, cuz I've been in denial.

Me too! I know just how you feel. I've regained some of the weight I've lost, but I can get back to where I want to be and you can too!!! Let's continue on this healthy journey and be all we can be. Lets teach our kids when we have a set back we can fix it and continue on. Good Job! Keep up the good work.

Hey - how come I've missed your new blogs? Sorry about that I guess I need to pay more attention.

Let me add my 2 cents by saying "Glad you're back!!"

Also glad you're doing Beck's - lots of us didn't do as well as you did by continuing your program so give yourself credit for that!

Also really glad the leg is good!!

Talk to you soon.

Sometimes FL there is only so much energy to go around and we usually shortchange ourselves; not our family and loved ones. You are a very important person too!!

You are not drowning in Da Nile....

    Nice pun!
But, ya, we do have to take account and get back on track. We kind of know the truth before we step on the scale - so not looking at the number doesn't change it.
I didn't check for a week - and it wasn't good. Trying to get back to taking account and doing something about it!

Okay - get that boat out of "de Nile"!

Back to Beck

Monday, January 03, 2011

After several months of irresponsible eating, I am a week into healthy, restrained eating and going through the Beck Diet Solution again.

By God's grace I never stopped strength training and have continued consistent with that 45-minute workout 3 times a week.

The August biopsy from my leg was clear; no cancer, so that is a great mercy. I am in God's care either way, but obviously I am happy with the pleasant results.

Welcome back! Great news about your leg and WTG on the strength training.
You are amazing in remembering about Beck's and having the power within you to make choices about what you chose to eat.

Praise the Lord for being cancer free!!

I am working hard to get back on track too... it is not easy, since I have been so busy and just tend to shove things in my mouth without thinking!! Walking the dogs have helped keep me moving, but my eating habits have also not been very good!!

We CAN do this!! emoticon
