Waiting

Wednesday, March 30, 2011

I hate waiting. In most forms it just annoys me, but sometimes, it really, really drives me crazy. Right now I am waiting to try to turn on my laptop again. I don't know how long I should let it sit. Someone said one day, some said a few. One said "longer than you think it needs" and one said 5-7 days. Luckily I have a glitchy desktop I can use as a backup, but it's not the same.

This morning I had planned to run 5 miles. In order to accomplish that and get to work on time, I had to be out the door absolutely no later than 5:45. Since I have been getting up closer to 6 since the time change, I knew it would be a challenge. My problem, when I am anticipating doing something early (and waiting for it)-like a run I don't want to miss-is that I don't sleep. I have good intentions. I go to bed early, set my alarm, get totally comfortable...then I wake up nearly every hour. Most times I am ready to jump out of bed thinking I am late before I realize that I still have 1, 2, 4 hours to sleep. Suffice it to say that I slept terribly last night. But, I got my run in. 5.2 miles in 45 minutes AND I made it to work on time.

I ate okay today. I'm pretty sure I ate too many servings of dinner, but I didn't go to Friendly's like I had originally planned. I'm finishing my water now and I have already gotten in a core workout and stretched. Going to do some dishes and hit the sack. Make tomorrow great!

Goals for tomorrow:
80+ oz water
Eat well
AM workout: 3.1 mile run-1/2 mile warm up followed by 4-1/4 mile spring/jog intervals (2 miles) and a .6 mile cool-down jog.
PM workout: 30DS
Stretch
In bed by 10:30

Waiting is something I loathe all the time. I have never depended on anyone but myself and especially when I order things on-line... the waiting just kills me.

I have the same problems with not sleeping well when I have to get up at a certain time - probably cause I don't use an alarm clock - so I'm always tired on morning swimming days.

Hope the laptop survived!

The laptop has water damage, right? I don't know if this would work, there are a lot of plugs and holes and such, but trick for drying out a wet cell phone is to put it in a bag with rice for a day or 2 - the rice absorbs the moisture. Perhaps you can find a big enough bag though, and in know they call some dehumidifying products (in the laundry section at WalMart)...? Just some thoughts! :)

I hate waiting too. I have to be pretty much on death's door to put up waiting at a clinic - something hubby doesn't understand at all. He's patience personified. Annoying - but guess he needs it to live with me. LOL

Anyhow - great job getting up for the run, especially after not getting a good nights rest.

I hate waiting too. And I sometimes have that same problem of anticipating and then waking up thinking it should be time and it's not. Good luck with the laptop and have a great day tomorrow!

Tuesday, an okay day

Tuesday, March 29, 2011

Overall, I'd say today gets a B if I had to give it a grade. Let's see...
Positives:
~Ate pretty well
~Got in all my water plus some
~Went to a moderately paced Zumba class this morning (believe me, it was restful compared to what I usually do!)
~enjoyed 2 (!) meals with my hubby (he took a night off as a mental health day)
~had some rest time
~made a delicious dinner that was healthy too. Shrimp and Chorizo Paella ala Rocco DiSpirito. www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,
s6-242-303-504-13872-0,00.html

~got in some good stretching
~picked up a new set of pants and jacket for $14 (Girls section at Walmart!)
~picked up a pair of slip on "sneakers" to wear around when I want to wear slippers but need to leave the house.

Negatives:
~my daughter dumped some water on my laptop. While this was only a small portion of the day, it ruined out attitudes for the rest of the night and we were all kind of on edge.
~had 2 glasses of wine while cooking/with dinner (okay, not totally negative, but not the best either)
~hit the snack food that my DH brought home a little harder than I would have liked. Again, I didn't go terribly over board, but chips and cheese dip are never good.

I'm heading to bed pretty soon. Working the next 2 days and I'd like to get a 45 minute run in tomorrow morning, I'm thinking 5 miles. Make tomorrow great!

Goals for tomorrow:
80+ oz water
Eat well
45 minute/5 mile run +core
Stretch
In bed by 10

OUch on the laptop... And you'r negatives.. I don't necessarily consider a negative.. I think it's a nice way for you to relax sometimes.. you've earned it.. we can't be food police 24/7 all the time.. It' gets boring.

Recovery

Monday, March 28, 2011

I got up this morning and did a slow 5K recovery run. It was cold. Hopefully my last really cold run for awhile. I really took it pretty easy and kept careful watch on my pace and breathing to make sure I was actually recovering and not pushing myself too hard. I ended up with an average of just about 10 m/m. Good enough. My plan is to rest tomorrow, run Wednesday (short, maybe intervals), and then get in 2 more runs this week, somehow. Al is gone again this weekend (only 2 more until he gets 2 weekends off), so I'm not sure how I'll fit them in, might end up pushing the stroller. I'd really like to do Thursday and then Sat/Sun back to back.

I have to say, I was pretty hungry all day today. I ate a good breakfast, my normal snack and a decent lunch, but I was really hungry again by 2:30. I had a pretty large snack and then ended up eating dinner late. It's almost 10 and I still feel like I could eat. I think after this week I might adjust my calorie burn goal and see where it puts me. Off to bed now, I need some sleep.

Goals for tomorrow:
80+ oz water
Eat well
30 min light cardio
Stretch
In bed by 10:30

Hmmm, I have been really hungry, too, & don't have a 15k to blame it on.

I've also been thinking about your buddy who said you need to be running 30 miles per week to train for an HM. Why? As long as you're running several times & getting in a long run I just don't see why you'd need that much mileage. Less you want to. That's like running 2 HMs + a 5k. Seems like overkill.

i agree with Violet about being hungry because of the 15K.. it burns alot...I'd say eat to the upper end of your ranges for a day or 2 to help replenish your glycogen stores. Have a good rest today! :)

My guess is all that hunger is a result of the 15K on Sunday. Don't know if I'm right or not but it seems that you would have burned a LOT of calories on Sunday. Anyway, have a great day today. I know you'll find a way to get those runs in!

Forks XV Race Report, 3/27/11

Sunday, March 27, 2011

This was my first race at this distance and the first time I've run it since last November. I had done some 8 milers, but it had been awhile since I'd gone a full 15K. My morning ended up much more hectic than I had originally planned. After church, I took Alexis up to a local maple farm for a quick visit and then we needed to get home and get some lunch. My race was at 2pm and I didn't start getting ready until almost 1. I put on my race clothes (should have work a jacket instead of the sweatshirt), put moleskin over my blister, applied muscle rub to my achy ankle, took 2 Advil and finished my 6th glass of water. Used the bathroom, double knotted my kicks, set up my mp3 player and headed to the race.

When I got to the school, I had about 20 minutes before the race started, so I put on my number, used the restroom again and tossed my race shirt in my car. I finally got to do a little stretching before LadyGwen and I jogged up to the start line (~3/4 mile). Once we got to the start line, I stretched some more and felt pretty good. It was cold and windy today (32* at the race start with 30+mph winds), but there were still people running in shorts and t-shirts.

The race started with a pretty good headwind and it took me 9 minutes to complete the first mile. I really wanted to take it easy at the start since I knew the second half of the course was pretty rough. At mile 2 I was starting to pick up the pace and maintaining my speed on the uphills. I had a girl in front of me that I ended up pacing for the first 5 or 6 miles. After the first 5K was done I felt much more comfortable and was under a 9 min/mi pace. We had a decent tailwind for just over a mile at this point, so that helped. I had a snack and at the next water station took just a sip or 2 of water. Miles 6-8.5 (ish) were pretty tough. Lots of up hills, the road was right along the river so it was much colder and the wind picked up again. At one point I was running up the hill and directly into the wind. It was here that I ended up passing the group I had been pacing. Many people slowed down and dropped their pace through this stretch. After the last hill, and with about one mile to go, I really turned on the heat. I was feeling good and knew that it was (literally) "all down hill from here", so I really picked up the pace for the last mile or so. If I had to guess, I'd say that I did the last mile in 7 minutes or so. Even though I was almost sprinting (for me), the last .3 was tough. You couldn't see the finish line until the very end (it was behind the school) and you just wanted to be done. The temp had also dropped a few degrees.

So, my final stats were: 15K (9.3 miles) in 1:19:17 which is an average pace of 8:31/mile (and actually faster than all the 10Ks I have run.) I was 115/248 overall and 4/11 in my division. I came in only 12 minutes behind a friend of mine that is running Boston in 3 weeks. She finished in 1:07 after already having run the course once (she was going for a negative split, which she accomplished). I had a nice chat with her after the race and she shared her cookies with me. She also gave me some pointers about getting ready for my HM in 7 weeks, like I need to be running at least 30 miles/week. (Man I hope it warms up soon!)

I would also like to say that this was a great race. It was very well organized (with the exception of running out of finisher mugs) and wasn't too crowded. They had 4 aid stations on the route, the route was well marked, there was an ambulance that paced the pack and there seemed to be plenty of snacks at the finish. A really enjoyable race, despite the weather.

And now, here are a few photos, courtesy of LadyGwen25.

Me heading up the first hill

Me chasing my "pace girl" (I did thank her at the end of the race and we chatted a bit)

Me and LadyGwen at the end of the race

After the race I came home, ate, drank more water and showered (I was NASTY from the road dirt). Then, since I said I would, I did my 20 minute core workout before I went to choir practice. I am beat and heading to bed now. Work tomorrow and Wednesday, hoping to push out some mileage this week. Should warm up mid week, yay!

Goals for tomorrow:
80+ oz water
45 min cardio (5K recovery run) +arms
Stretch
Eat well
In bed by 10:30

And then there was heat!

Saturday, March 26, 2011

Yay!! Thank goodness for my hubby, my dad and the local hardware store that had the part we needed! We got the heat back on for good about noon today. It was indeed the motor for the blower. We thought we had one for free but it turned out to be too small. Luckily the new one was only $150. So much cheaper than a Saturday service call. We managed to stay plenty warm last night and this morning we brought the space heater downstairs, ran the oven and I did dishes and got in my 30 minute workout. I stayed plenty warm even though the house was about 50*F.

I ate terribly today though. Between pancakes and bacon for breakfast and 3 parties today, I'm feeling rather stuffed. Luckily, I have my 15K race tomorrow to burn it off. Apparently I was sub-consciously carb loading. Heh! I did get in all of my water and I was pretty active though. It was a good day. Busy and I'm beat, but nice to visit with friends.

Goals for tomorrow:
80+ oz water
15K race +core
Stretch!!!
Eat well
