July 23, 2014 UNDERSTAND AND KNOW GOD

In order to know something, we have to understand it. In order to understand something, we have to learn it. In order to learn something, we have to search for information and study it. If we want understanding, we have to seek it from the Source. God can give us understanding when we commit to learn from Him. When we seek the true God and stop trying to understand the things of the world, we will gain the understanding only He can give. And we can find God when we accept Jesus Christ and begin to fellowship with Him.

1 John 5:20 “And we know that the Son of God has come, and he has given us understanding so that we can know the true God. And now we live in fellowship with the true God because we live in fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ. He is the only true God, and he is eternal life.” (NLT)

Dear Lord, we know there is a process. We know to understand and know You we need to first accept that Jesus lived and died only for us. We need to accept Him as our Savior and believe in Him. We know when we decide to follow and fellowship with Jesus, we will find You. We know when we decide to believe and trust in Jesus, we can understand and know the true God. And we thank You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

To understand and know God, we need to read His word.

To understand and know God, we need to talk with Him every day, and listen.

To understand and know God, we need to follow and fellowship with Jesus.

When we first seek God, everything else we need will be taken care of.

If we truly want to understand and know God, we need to seek Him daily.

Matthew 6:33 “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” (KJV)

Focus: Know and understand God by seeking Him in all you do.

July 22, 2014 FOLLOW THE LORD

If we want to have true understanding of others, we need to follow God. He is the only One who understands. He understands justice. He understands the actions of others. He understands what we need to do to help others. When we follow the Lord, we can totally depend on Him so we can step out in faith doing what He calls us to do even when we don’t completely understand.

Ephesians 5:2 “Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.” (NLT)

Dear Lord, we know we are called to follow You. We know we are called to love others. We know sometimes we get bogged down in trying to understand something we don’t need to worry about. Help us to focus on You today and follow You as You have called us to do. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

We can’t figure out things completely without God. And even then there will be things we just don’t understand.

When we follow God, we can be sure that He will lead us on a path of understanding.

We are called to follow the example of Christ and following Him will lead us to greater understanding.

Following God means to read His word, listen to His calling and look for opportunities to share His word with others every day.

Those who follow God will have a better understanding of life and justice more than those who don’t.

Proverbs 28:5 “Evil people don’t understand justice, but those who follow the Lord understand completely.” (NLT)

Focus: Examine every part of your day and be sure you are following God in all areas of your life.

July 21, 2014 DO WE UNDERSTAND?

So many times we tell others we understand what they are going through. We understand their feelings. We understand their reasoning. We understand what they are saying. But do we? Do we really understand what they are going through? Only God really knows what others are dealing with. Only He sees what their lives are really like. We can’t always totally understand what is going on in someone’s life, but we can listen, pray and love them.

Colossians 1:9 “So we have not stopped praying for you since we first heard about you. We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding.” (NLT)

Dear Lord, help us to be more understanding. Help us to really think about the situation and the people in it and know that we don’t know the entire situation. Help us to remember to put ourselves in the other person’s shoes and try to be more understanding. We may never know the whole truth but You do. Help us to not just say we understand but to listen, pray and love others. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Knowing God is the only One who can truly understand something or someone, we need to stay in communication with Him.

God understands and knows about every situation in life. That is why we need to trust in Him.

We don’t have to understand everything but we do need to pray about it all.

When we don’t understand something, God can help.

When we pray for understanding, God will give it to us.

Philippians 1:9 “I pray that your love will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding.” (NLT)

Focus: Stop trying to understand everything and put more focus on God and doing His will.

July 19, 2014 UNDERSTAND FRIENDS

We are all busy. We all have our own responsibilities and priorities. So we need to understand there will be friends who are too busy to help us sometimes. There will be friends who let us down. But we shouldn’t take it personally. Instead we should seek to understand them more so we know what we can expect from them. We can understand our friends better when we really get to know them. We can do this by asking them questions and listening. We can learn more about their lives, their needs and how we can better help them rather than expecting something from them all the time.

Titus 3:14 “Our people must learn to do good by meeting the urgent needs of others; then they will not be unproductive.” (NLT)

Dear Lord, we know others will let us down. We know others have busy lives and things they feel they need to do. Help us to not always be looking for them to help us but instead look for ways to understand them and help them. Show us ways to learn more about them and their needs. Remind us to depend only on You and not rely on friends who will sometimes let us down. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Rather than getting upset about someone letting us down, why not seek to understand what is going on in their lives and help them.

When we are always depending on others for help, we need to ask ourselves what we are doing for them.

Relationships are not always about what we can get but instead what we can give.

When we think that someone else doesn’t not understand us, we need to ask ourselves if we are truly trying to understand them.

When we are too busy to be a friend, we are going to let others down.

Jeremiah 2:36 “First here, then there—you flit from one ally to another asking for help. But your new friends in Egypt will let you down, just as Assyria did before.” (NLT)

Focus: Taking time to get to really know our friends requires we listen more than we talk.

July 18, 2014 NEW FRIENDS

We all have opportunities to meet new friends. Wherever we go there are people we don’t know. Sometimes we need time to get to know them. Sometimes we need to stop what we are doing and take time to find out who they are, what they do and where they are from. God puts people in our lives for a reason. When we take time to understand more about them, He will show us how we can help them.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 “Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble” (NLT)

Dear Lord, we pray You will help us to make new friends today. So many people are in need of friends. So many people have things in common that need to be shared. So many people are issues that need to be discussed. Help us to be a friend to all we encounter today. Help us to be good, love others and help others. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

When we take time to make new friends, we will grow in wisdom and knowledge as the Lord leads us to help them.

Making new friends takes time but is well worth the investment.

The Lord knows who we need to have conversations with today. Let’s be the friend He has called us to be.

If we want to have new friends, we need to reach out and take time to get to know those we don’t know very well.

Making new friends will help us learn more about others but also give us opportunities to help.

Proverbs 17:17 “A friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need.” (NLT)

Focus: Be the friend you want others to be to you.
