Another start!

This is Spring and I am determined to make a new start of things.

I am tired of plateauing and not losing any weight. I guess I have been not trying hard enough.

I track my food every day but the evening munchies have got to go.

There is no sense in tracking food all day and then blowing it by stuffing myself in front of the TV every evening.

So, that's it. This is a note to myself that I can lose these last 40 pounds. I am going to do it. I would like to set a goal of 2 pounds a week.

Do you all think that's a doable goal? I don;t want to lose too fast. But if I can attain that I can hit my goal in 5 short months... let's set Sept 30th of this year as a goal point.

If I can do it faster all the better. But I don't want to starve myself either.

And, I'm cutting out all the sodas and sticking to water, water, water.

And I want to start building up my stationary bike riding. I'm going to start slow and build up. I have a bad lower back so I don't want to overdo it.

This little blog is just a reminder to me and a push to get myself moving.

    1-2 pounds is a good goal. If you have a bad back, be careful in the bike. I couldn't do one, even when I was healthy & fit, as it killed my back. Got an elliptical and was in hog heaven! Worked my way up to 3.5 miles a night every night. Then this happened, and I'm doing good to get from the couch to the bathroom using the walker. Oh well, maybe things will change for the better.

    Hey I am a evening snacker too but I just started eating healthier snacks at night. Being a guy you probably like chips and dip or sugary snacks with regular pop. I know my hubby does. Try popcorn with some of that flavor stuff on it or baked chips and just measure out the allowed amount in a bowl. I know men snack totally different from us women. My hubby doesnt like diet pop but he likes coke zero if its cold. Anyways you will have to figure out what works best for you even if its going cold turkey on the evening snacking. emoticon emoticon

    Bob great goals. Just set up rewards for every five pounds you drop to help with motivation. I too had problems with soda until I switched to diet pepsi. You do get use to the taste and you do not put into yourself all those unwanted calories. I now find regular pepsi to sugary. I had to switch to diet pepsi because my Dentist told me she would not work on my teeth until I switched, otherwise it would just be a loss of time for her.

Yoy may want to limit the amount of time you spend watching TV in the evening because you see that as time to mindless munch.

If you can add some strength training too. A good sweat from strength training will also helps shed those pounds. I do 25-45 minutes of strength traing each day. And you may find out it helps with your lower back when you work your core. But like with the stationary bike build up slowly. Maybe start with a goal of 10-20 minutes each session.

A Mom Update and other bits

Happy Sunday everyone!

I have been going out to see my Mom, who is in a special care home for dementia patients, regularly. It seems to me (and I have been told by the staff there) that she is becoming more involved in her own little world. She doesn't talk or laugh as much as she used to and they say that they can see changes. I enjoy visiting her and we do have a laugh although the minute I leave she forgets I have been there. But I love seeing her and pray that she remains in good physical health for a long time. She doesn't have Alzheimer's but a dementia called Lewy-Bodies... this affects physical movement as well as memory. I think I spelled that right. The last time I was out there she kept asking for a phone so she could call and go live with her mother, who passed away probably 40 years ago. My Mom is 94. But, we have a laugh, I tell her I love her and that's about all I can do. Sometimes it is depressing for me to see her this way as she used to be so active, but that is life.

I am working on my goals and although it is tough I am trying my best. I am trying to sell a lot of old things in my house that I never use anymore just to get rid of the clutter that has built up over the years. I've had a great day or two at it as 3 of the 7 items I posted for sale actually sold. I was happy about that.

I want to thank you for all your support. You guys and gals are the best!

Remember the country singer Roy Clark? He turns 78 on April 15th and I found this wonderful song by him recalling the days when we were young. Sometimes I wish I could be younger again, but life does roll along.

    It's rough watching our parents deteriorate. I have been there and done that with mom and my grandparents and now dad. We just have to treasure the good times.

I need to rid my life of a lot of things as well that I do not need.

Be Fit Over 40 - 10 Weight Loss Mind Tricks

Hello my friends,

I found this online and wanted to share and add some comments. This is a list of the top 10 tips to trick yourself into weight loss, especially for people over 40 (like me). Some of these we know already but there may be a couple that we don't (again, like me). Here we go:

(1) Drink 6-8 glasses of cold water per day. Count the glasses for a few days. Drink one glass before each meal. Drink cold water as it take body heat to warm up and that burns a couple of extra calories.

(2) Eat something for breakfast and make sure it contains some protein. This will kick up your metabolism for the day. AND, coffee doesn't count as breakfast, haha!

(3) Carry a little bag of carrots to munch on throughout the day. Why carrots? Because they are crunchy, sweet, good for you and you can't really eat too many.

(4) Don't eat after 8 pm at night. Why? Your body's natural metabolism slows down during the late night period. So, try to let it do that by not eating.

(5) Do not consume useless extra calories from your beverages. If you must drink soda, drink diet soda, try to drink black coffee and tea and avoid the cream and sugar, Also, try and limit alcohol consumption and limit fruit juice to two per day. Fruit juices can contain high amounts of natural sugar.

(6) Switch some of your food to law fat or fat free options. Perhaps try switching from 2% milk to 1% or skim milk. Try using a light mayo instead of the regular kind. Get the picture here? Sure you do.

(7) Use spices instead of dressings that have a lot of fat. Spices can "spice things up" and lower the fats we eat.

(8) Keep a food journal. That's great for us Sparkers. We have one on here. This helps us keep on track and when we're done we could really be surprised (in a good or bad way)

(9) Here's one you may not know about. Finish all meals with a piece of sugar-less gum. It really helps overindulging after your meal is over. We may forgo that desert we don't actually need. Wow, I'm going to be spending a lot on gum I see.

(10) Switch your dishware to smaller plates and bowls. It has been proven that if you have a bigger plate or bowl that you will take more food. Trick your mind into eating less and still feeling full. This is a pure psychological trick.

Yes, you can be fit after forty! Try some or all of these tips. And always remember that you will have your good and bad days, your ups and downs, but your overall progress will be tremendous. Successful dieting and weight loss is a life choice. You will have bumps along the way.

My new goals, updates and a poem

Hello my friends,

My how times flies. It's been over a month since my last blog. I wanted to update you on a few things.

My tooth underwent a successful root canal. I just have to get the permanent filling done in a few weeks but it feels fine. And, it really was a breeze. I have a great dentist.

I visit my Mom at her special care home for dementia patients at least once a week. I hope to get out more often now that the snow is melting away. She seems more "distant" in that she is more often than not in her own little world. But, we have a great time when I visit and for that I am so glad. She has become resistant to almost all antibiotics and so they are having a problem dealing with her infections which gets a lot. I pray to God that they can find a solution.

I have had the winter blahs and blues. We had record snowfalls and cold weather and so most days I seemed to be in the house hunched in front of the TV or the computer munching on not-so-good snack foods. That will change.

I light of that, I am resetting my goals and I am posting the results here for all to see. I need a good kick if you see me not progressing, haha. But, I know you are my friends and you will give me that support. Don't kick too hard now.

(1) I have lost 44 pounds so far and need to drop 38 more to reach my goal weight of 180 pounds. This will place my BMI in the "desirable" category. Woohoo. I want that so badly.

(2) I need to drop my total cholesterol from 5.65 to 3.50 and raise my good cholesterol from 0.88 to 1.30. My doctor started me on a pill for that, but a small dosage every other day as he says the rest might be able to be accomplished through a change in diet and exercise.

(3) I need to follow a better sleep pattern. I am a night owl by nature. I am up til all hours. I want to try and get to bed at a decent hour and get plenty of sleep as that is important. I also want to resume my meditation/relaxation CD's every day. I have been getting out of that habit. I need to relax my mind.

(4) I want to start my exercise program again which I admit fell by the wayside during the long, dark months of winter. I am going to start my walking and using my stationary bike. I will start slowly and work up.

(5) Finally, I am going to give up the terrible snacks in favour of some more healthy ones. I am going to stay away from the fast foods and eat more healthy fruits and vegetables.

So, my friends, you can help me do this. I'll be blogging about my progress so any suggestions you have or words of encouragement are really welcome. Thanks.

Congrats on being more than half way to your goal weight! emoticon

I am a night owl like you~I like to stay up till 1am. or 2am. Usually, I do not wake up until 11am. or 12pm. It is hard for me to change this to fit in with a 'normal' pattern. I feel I think better after I have been up for a while, especially after I have had my daily Diet Pepsi. So I do not know what to suggest on how to change your pattern. But if it works for you~ why change it?

With Spring coming and more day light you will have more time to fit in your walks. I think you will be back on track with this goal.

Like you I also should eat more fruits and veggies. The next time I go shopping I plan on getting bananas and strawberries. If you have fruit and veggies and not junk in your house, you will do better on this goal.

    Ugh on the root canal. I have had a couple and they were okay but I hate teeth problems.

I have MRSA so I can relate to the antibiotic problems your mom has.

Our winter was horrible too and is still lingering off and on.

    Relaxation for the mind is a wonderful thing.

I think you have made wonderful, achievable goals. It's a good thing I don't live where it snows, I'd be in big trouble if I did. I could easily become a hibernating bear.

So glad Spring is here, sounds like you have some healthy and happy times ahead. :)

A sunny Thursday and Snow pics

Hello my friends,

I came across this when I was perusing the secrets of success boards on SP this morning and I thought it was so good I had to share it just in case you haven't seen it. I didn't write this so I have to give credit to Sparker SPNGNBRG for posting it.



STRATEGY PER NOAH'S ARK:

(1) Do not miss boat!

(2) Remember we are all in same boat!

(3) Plan ahead, it wasn't raining as Noah built the Ark.

(4) Stay fit, when you're 60 years old or over you may be asked to do something BIG.

(5) Don't listen to critics just get on with the job to be done.

(6) Travel in SPARK pairs.

(7) No matter the storm, with God a rainbow is waiting.

(8) Build your future on high ground.

(9) Speed isn't always an advantage. The snails were on board with cheetahs.

(10) When you're stressed - float.

(11) Remember,the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals.

We set a record for the amount of snow on the ground. Measured at our airport there is 120 cm of snow on the ground. For those not in metric that's 47 inches. That beats our old record of 119 cm set back in 1992. I knew there was snow but that's a lot! Today is the first day in ages that our afternoon temperature will be above freezing. And sunny... I love it!

I'll close this with a couple of photos taken of the snow on my street. I think maybe it will take until May to get rid of all this.

    We sure have had a lot of snow this year, my dh has been shoveling the snow and ice off the roof a lot, we've had so much that it's up to my eaves and the dog can climb on the roof and survey the neighborhood. The house is staying a little warmer though with all of it banked against the house. So I guess it's good for something. Have a great week, maybe we won't get so much this week.
