Day 240 and I'm going to Zumba!

Saturday, July 02, 2011

Woo hoo! I've got the time and the energy and I'm going to Zumba to celebrate Day 240. This is a good day! I'm going to dedicate it to all of us out there who work and work and "never" lose a pound. That's my predicament. I've gone from a pretty sedentary life style to exercising 6 or 7 days a week, almost without losing a pound. It's so strange! But I have lost inches (I think. I forgot to measure myself) and, even more importantly, I'm definitely healthier and in better shape overall. So, here's to getting healthy without losing pounds!

I learned it on Spark People!

I used to choose "Weight Loss" on the treadmill at the gym, thinking I was being especially virtuous. Turns out "Weight Loss" is intended for long workouts at low intensity---just the opposite of what I thought I was getting! If you want a good challenging workout, choose "Cardio," which gives you incline along with your speed. Now I know!
In any case, I'm not complaining. I thought I'd be at jury duty all day today, but it was postponed again. Now I may have to come in on Friday, but at least I'm off the hook for tomorrow.
Woo hoo! As a little "celebration" for not having to go in today and because I wasn't sure if I would be called for tomorrow, I went to aerobics class and then went straight to the treadmill and ran as hard as I could (not all that hard, mind you, but still!) for 15 minutes. Yowser! My Spark Peeps were my inspiration so THANK YOU!!!
Day 237!

How do you Spark jury duty?

Tuesday, June 28, 2011

That's right: I'm going to have to break my streak because of jury duty... It has to be done, but I'm not relishing the thought. I take the obligation very seriously so I guess I'll have to hope for some calisthenics at the end of each day. Wish me luck!
Day 236 and beyond....

As someone who has been employed full-time for the last 22 years, I always look at jury duty as a mini-vacation and a chance to catch up with my leisure reading. Have a relaxing day!

Don't quit now ~ squeeze a little extra time in the morning before and anywhere else during your breaks. emoticon

Is your streak exercising every day? I'm sure your aiming for significant exercise but maybe for now you go back to the "just 10 minutes" approach? Are you sure you'll be called? Maybe you can wear a pedometer and pace any chance you get so you can get 10,000 steps. Or at the end of a long day sitting still in the courtroom practice some light yoga and stretching to loosen up you muscles. You've come so far for do long - don't break you streak now! You can do it!!

Is there any way that the requirements in the streak can be, ahem, "tweaked"? I've had a few days where it's been challenging for me to meet the needs, but I've managed so far.....and none of those tweaks even involved jury duty......

Hope your JD goes well (I've always hated the waste of time as I've never been called, and have lost significant $$$$ each time).....

Not ready for prime time!

Thursday, June 23, 2011

Day 231...and I got a good lesson in humility. I was doing the elliptical earlier this week and getting what seemed like a healthy workout when I noticed that the "Calories" counter on my machine was displaying way fewer calories than the machine of the person next to me. Now don't get me wrong---I don't believe those counters accurately measure energy expended during a workout, but still.... Hmmm, I thought. Maybe I'm not challenging myself with a high enough level?
So, today when I got on the treadmill for a warm-up before pilates class, instead of my usual Level 2 or 3, with occasional excursions into Level 4 or 5, I decided to crank that baby up to Level 10 and see how that felt. Woo hoo! I could keep up for, oh, a minute! Then I was pushing the SLOW DOWN button. First, I lowered the speed; then I lowered the incline; and then I desperately lowered the level. Not willing to give in entirely, I stayed at Level 4 and actually ran for a few minutes, something I rarely do. So, it was a good workout and a good lesson. I'm not yet ready for prime time!
Still, plugging away day by day IS working. I'm getting stronger and healthier, and I'm very grateful for that!

you'll get there no need to rush and end up hurting yourself, like you've told me before... baby steps :) and I'm so proud of you for taking on level 10 and sticking it out for as long as you did, woo hoo!

One week later

Sunday, June 19, 2011

Woo hoo! I went to aerobics three times this week, pilates once, and Zumba once. On Sunday I "rested" by doing what used to be our "long walk." I'm very happy to say that I can genuinely see the progress I've made. I still get tired; that Zumba in particular wore me out! But I'm getting stronger, and although I've only lost one pound (weird, isn't it?), I've gotten some muscle and I have more endurance. I'm hoping I can do the very same thing this week. I'm so grateful. And

My losses have not been huge despite working out and eating well but, like you, I've definitely noticed changes in my shape. Clothes that I hadn't worn for a while fit me now!! emoticon

You are making all the right choices and are on the right path, keep going! You're emoticon

Take care xx emoticon
