Time to CHECK IN!

I have a mountain bike race in 6.5 weeks from today... Have I done a lick of training?
I have been out on my mountain bike a grand total of ONCE since I put it's knobby tires back on... that, in itself is SAD, SAD, SAD!

I guess I'm just a kid at heart... I wish I could simply play all day! I hate it when my responsibilities (WORK and BILLS) get in the way of my fitness endavors! (I know this happens to all of us as we grow up!'s no wonder being fit as a kid was effortless for me!) I was thinking on the walk to the bus today, "Why were my days so much longer as a kid? that I'm older, they seem to FLY BY... before I know it, I'm going to be 60 years old! OMG!!!"

Honestly... WHY is it that days just FLY BY in our mid life?
Do we become less mindful about our surroundings?
Do we get bogged down with responsibilities and forget to have FUN anymore?
Are we just so used to our daily routine that it's like we are on auto pilot?

I would love to hear your thoughts on this subject! (I am taking a page from RUN_LIFT_EAT's
blog tactics! I love to read the responses she gets to such thought provoking blog questions!)

Let the comments start rolling in! ... emoticon emoticon

I know what you mean about time flying back. Just wait until you start a family and it feels like it even goes by quicker. I just wish we could stay young forever! I still feel young at heart though so that counts for something.

I've been the same way with running, I'm running a 5k race this weekend I haven't been running like I usually do for a race. I hope I snap out of that come the end of July when I need to start training for the 1/2 marathon!

I think that life flies by when we get older because we have set times that we have to do things by. There is always a deadline that has to be met, whether it's for our job or to get a chore done. When we're kids, we do what we feel like doing when we feel like doing it. You always live in the now as opposed to thinking about the future and what thing is next on your list of things to do. Kids get told by their parents that they have to make their bed, but they're not thinking about making it until that moment. They don't put it off for the future. They either do it when they're told, or don't do it and forget about it until they're told again (or punished). I personally wouldn't want time to go slower now because most of the time I'm not doing something I want to be doing, I'm at work!

Too funny! I was thinking this exact same thing yesterday as I was rushing around getting all my chores and errands done after my workout. At 9 pm when I was climbing into the shower I was wondering how my day could fly by so quickly and still have so many things left to get accomplished!

The years do fly by so quickly that's why we should make EVERY moment count and NEVER take anything for granted.

GREAT BLOG! And girl, I KNOW you will rock your race!

All I can say is..."Wait until you have children." They are a true marker of time. I realize this now as my daughter gets ready to end her final year of Elementary School. emoticon emoticon

One thing you can count on is time passing. Enjoy every minute and by all means HAVE FUN TOO!

6 weeks training is not too bad, depending on what you're used to! I had a race last weekend and the only time I'd been on the bike since last october was the monday before! It went better than I thought it would, but admittedly not as well as it could have!

I remember my first year at school feeling SO LONG, and at the end of it the teacher said she couldn't believe how quickly it had gone - I thought she was nuts! Back then though, 1 year was about 20% of my life to date wheras now it's more like 5, and everything's so new to a kid, we don't process as much when we get older! Maybe the trick to never growing old and feeling that time is slipping away is to try something new everyday? Lol.

As a kid, I thought summer vacation would fly by SO fast! I know it had to do with only having 6 weeeks off, while the kids in the Czech Republic (the only summer schedule I compared those with) had 8 weeks off, so I used to be jealous. Now I am stumped when I hear my nieces say that, while they like summer vacation, it gets boring. I do think that 9 weeks is too long, in that sense. (just a little side point here)
As for your question, I know for me, the reason I don't have time, is because I overschedule. As a kid, I didn't have to worry about cleaning, laundry, grocery shopping and/or going/driving to my son's practices, making lunches, making time for DH, other errands and/or sparking-LOL! I tend to want to do ti "all" and totally overschedule, ADDING things to my schedule WITHOUT taking some away.... no wonder things get out of balance.... REST takes on way too small of a roll.... so here you have it!

I think you hit the nail on the head: We get bogged down in our responsibilities and go on autopilot as a coping mechanism.

I like to think that when I'm old and gray, I'll be having just as much fun as I am today. I had a pretty crappy childhood - so I'm makin' up for it now!

Don't worry - six and a half weeks is plenty of time to recondition yourself and get your 'bike legs' back:) How far's the race? Is it speed or endurance?

During mid-life I was having five children, so my days were also NIGHTS that I had no time for myself. I'm 59 now and FINALLY child free again, so I'm doing for me.

Interesting question...I never thought about WHY it feels like time goes by faster as an adult than it did when I was a kid; I just took it for granted that that's just the way it is! I think that when you're a kid your executive functioning skills just aren't as developed so you're not as aware of time going by and responsibilities that need attending to. You just do whatever you wanna do until someone tells you it's time to do something else. And for most kids the time committment for "must-do"s is probably smaller than most adults'.

It's funny - my fifth graders and I experience the same 10-month school year, but for them it must feel like eternity and for me I cannot believe yet another year is already almost over.

The older I get, the less energy I have for all that I want to do. So my To Do List -- or should I call it my Bucket List -- gets less and less checked off on it with each passing year. Oh, to have the energy -- and the "scr*w it" attitude -- of a teenager again.

I too have become more aware of how our days fly by later in life. In fact, I was just talking with my mother yesterday, saying that Christmas is 6 months away!!!! What? I just remember playing and shoveling the snow in January. More importantly, I just finished paying off my credit cards from last Christmas!!! Ha Ha!
I guess as kids time drags on because we have less responsibilities! I know I wish I had about 5 more hours in my day! Take care & Have a GREAT evening!

Doode! Did you /read/ my blog a few days ago? Where, oh where did the fun Me go?! LOL!!!

When the hubby & I first started dating, we were amazed at how time seemed to crawl by in the wonderful lazy way that can only come from being completely and totally in the moment... and doing, um, yeah... other stuff.

But it was from totally being focused on one thing, not distracted by what we /should/ do or the 50-million other things going on in our life.

I think you summed it up with: "Are we just so used to our daily routine that it's like we are on auto pilot?"

The short answer: Yep. We forget to take joy in the little things that come our way, and just pay attention to what's going on around us.

Weekend Eating Disaster!

Monday, June 08, 2009

Ugh! My weekend eating (from Friday to Sunday) was HORRIBLE!

My stomach is out and I've got serious muffin top over my pants today! BOO!
I need to get back on the clean eating train ASAP to fix this problem! (I am sure I've gained 5 pounds of BLOAT but I'm too afraid to step on the scale to find out!)

This weekend I did a bunch of things that are out of the ordinary. I took my niece and nephew to "Build-A-Bear" where they each made their own teddy bear! It was so much fun, they loved every minute of it! The whole day wiped me out, however, and ended up eating way too many carbs for lunch (which was also eaten way too late!)
Then Friday night we drove to Leduc on our way to the wedding... we stayed the night at my parents house. We stopped at BP's for dinner. (MEH. No clean eating there!)
In the morning we carried on to the wedding! For breakfast, I had Tim Hortons (blahh... more carbs!) and for lunch I had cheese, crackers, fruit and veggies at Collin's aunt and uncles (which was actually easy to eat, but again, low protein!) The wedding was held outside at the Groom's parent's acerage... it was beautiful! They had a tent set up for their guests after the wedding for us to mingle and chat while they went to get their pictures taken! What a great idea!!! However, to eat, they had a cake, candies, chips, pop and alcoholic beverages also avaliable to us in there... and guess who couldn't resist the cake?
The reception was held at 5:00... I could tell I was feeling protein deprived because I was so tired at that point! I wanted to sleep more then eat!
The dinner was excellent, but it was a buffet... and there was PEROGIES on the menu! OMG... I haven't had perogies in AGES... so again, I indulged!
And I had a dessert, or two.
And a piece of wedding cake, or two.
And a glass of wine, or two...
OMG... I feel lie a blimp ready to take off! emoticon emoticon emoticon

Feeling UBER guilty, this morning I went for a run... and I lifted weights at lunch for an hour... and tonight I teach another 1hr weight class! I hope I'm feeling more normal tomorrow!
I AM however, back on the eating right train, I cooked last night and packed accordingly! Feeling better about that already! emoticon emoticon

OMG god Jess, I have the exact same feeling a blimp ready to take off! I have had terrible days since last Tuesday! I've had 6 cheat days in a row!! YIKES! I was really dumb and stepped on the scale this morning too. What a wake up call. I was up 11.5 lbs from where I really want to be. I need to go with out the sweets as much as I can until I get things back under control. They are really wrecking everything for me. That is what set me off and I've been so tired and I would have never guessed it was from lack of protein until I read your blog but that makes complete sense since I've had carb/junk/sweet overload. I'm finally back on track too. I can't wait to have a healthy week and many more!

I'm glad you had a good time though. Build-A-Bear is a blast. Did you dance some of your calories off?!?! Let's have a great week. I'm also tracking when I can, I think right now I need that feeling of knowing what I'm consuming! It will help me get back on track!

Weak biceps and Tired Forearms

Thursday, June 04, 2009

I have been experiencing pain in my right elbow that I thought was tendinitis (tennis elbow) for many months now (I'm guessing since October last year, so like 8-9 months now, on and off)
I decided to book a chiropractic appointment with my trainer (she is also a chiropractor!) Since she is the one training me, I thought it would also benefit ME if she knows exactly what my problems are too. We had a great first session & determined that I DON'T have tendonitis but a mild form of bicep tendinosis (chronic inflamation) in that one elbow... most likely caused by my high rep. classes, in which I teach many bicep tracks with bottom half movements (this has caused some excessive strain on my coracobrachialis and bicep)
emoticon ... I KNOW! ...Technical stuff, eh?
Who knew a simple bicep curl could be so damaging!?!

Wendy has prescribed me 4 things todo to aid in the recover of this overuse injury:

1) REST (woo hoo, haha!) - avoid bicep exercises that aggrivate injury.
2) massage (again, HECK YES!) - 2X/month, target bicep, pecs & forearms.
3) forearm flex & extend exercises - use a 3lb weight, 15 reps each direction.
4) pec stretches - lie on a foam roller down the length of my spine and just open my arms like an open book, arm along wall then turn away, and wrist stretches on the floor.

I have been diligent in doing everything she has suggested and today during ARMS training my forarms got sore really quickly! I couldn't believe it!!! I wasn't even doing any biceps yet (doing shoulders) and my forearms were talking to me as if they had never been "turned on" before! (OH... so that muscle ALSO needs to be worked??? LOL I never realized the implications to over training the big muscles and neglecting the small ones... but they ALL do work together and this is becoming even more OBVIOUS to me now!)
Apparently, due to the LACK of forearm training I've been doing (rather NOT doing), my larger muscle groups have been required to work much harder and hence the over-use injury to one of my bicep muscles!

Hopefully, with my new found homework of forearm exercises, I won't look like Popeye the next time you see me!!!

"Gug, Gug, Gug! Check out MY forarms, Ladies!"

... come to think of it, I do love my spinach! emoticon
(just not from a can! LOL)

I know that this is very serious, but I had to crack up at the Popeye comment! Too funny! Just don't get those "turkey leg" forearms. LOL (They are REALLY sexy to me on men, but I don't think that we would love fabulous with turkey legs! LMAO!)

NSD Photo shoot pics

Tuesday, June 02, 2009

They arrived in the mail last night. I plugged the CD into my computer to see them...
and my mouth did one of these:

I thought I looked fabulous... yet, the lighting at the photo shoot was terrible and makes me (my face) look 10 years older then I really am... But my body looks 10 years younger! HA!

Here are 3 that I liked (but I photoshopped them a tad to improve the lighting disaster)

Don't ask me why we posed with a heavy bag... but this is my favorite picture of the set! I love how my mouth is open! So cute!

This picture is my second favorite... my hair looks great, however, my muscles get no love!

Just showing off the goods! I absolutely can't wait till I can wear this outfit again! LOVE!

Just thought I'd share... These pictures came at a really good time! They remind me of how far I can go, when I work both 100% nutrition and kick @$$ training in parallel!

Getting pumped to do this again in the fall! But for now, I really am enjoying OFF SEASON!
I've stopped weighing in daily... stopped being so diet obsessed... just living life!!! Enjoying the fruits of my year long labour! ...and it is SO GOOD!
I went shopping on the weekend and bought size 2 shorts from Gap and XS tops from LeChateau... weight loss is NO LONGER the goal and it is finally sinking in!
I have reached my SIZE goal (surprassed it, actually... not that I ever had a goal size but I started my journey wearing a size 12 pants... so I never dreamt of ever fitting into a size 2 ANYTHING, EVER! LOL) and now it's all about transforming my SHAPE... AGAIN!
TRAIN, TRAIN, TRAIN! Let's see how much mass I can build over the summer!
...Is 5 pounds out of the question?

Cake Batter, anyone?

Saturday, May 30, 2009

I bought a new protein powder yesterday because my current isolates are not exciting me like they once used to! I picked up "Cake Batter" flavored Muscle Milk... all I can say is OMG! I can't wait to hide this into some muffins! I used it this morning tor my pancakes and they truely did taste like real cake batter pancakes! SO FREAKING GOOD!

I haven't been into drinking protein powder shakes because they actually make my stomach hurt lately (I think due to all the air in the drink!) but perhaps I'll try this flavor today and use more milk then water so it's creamier! Oh, it's gonna taste awesome, I already know that!!!

Thanks for the tip. Does baking the powder destroy any of the nutrients?

That flavor sounds totally delicious! I need to go and buy some myself and make some muffins. Do you have a specific recipe for muffins that you add the protein powder to? Just curious.
I really like protein shakes, but barely ever make them..... but this flavor sounds so yum to me, too.
Muscle Milk is anyways one of my favorite tasting protein powders!
