Overdue Pics and 133.1

Monday, March 15, 2010

My new 'One Tooth' outfit! So cute and both the top and bottoms together were only $105 +tax! (Most pants alone at Lululemon cost that price!!!)

Here are the pearls I plan on wearing with my wedding dress! I plan on remodeling the long strand of pearls into either a 2 or 3 stranded collar! (Yes, I'm a crafty beeetch! LOL) I was thinking I might redo the bracelet too (to make it smaller and remove the navy stones in the middle) but then I got to thinking "something BLUE" ... so I figure I'll keep them! :)

Also, I weighed in today... my lowest in many weeks: 133.1!

SOOOOOO I might hit my goal (132) by my wedding day after all!

Here is a quick picture of my new shoes; Sketchers: Pastellics! I freaking LOVE them!!! They are not only functional (light weight and fit my foot like a glove) but they are so freaking CUTE!!!
I originally thought Sketchers were nothing more then a cute shoe... but I decided to give them a try in the gym and was quite pleasantly surprised how GREAT they are as trainers too!

Recently on my shopping trip I bought a couple pairs of fitness Sketchers (feather light: D'lites), as well as another pair for walking to work. (Which, I might add, I paid the same price for ALL 3 PAIRS of shoes that I would for 1 pair of "running shoes" at the Running room!) I am SO GLAD I did because these shoes are the best things I've worn at the gym in ages! (My Nikes are really worn out and tired and my NewBalance trainers have never been very comfortable for my flat feet!)

I would not wear these shoes running though. So, when I went running on Saturday morning, I decided to try wearing an old pair of Nike's (Nike Air) that I have used for working out BACK IN THE DAY! (They have a new insole in them!) I figured they would be a better running shoe then my Nike SHOX which currently always cause me pain when I run.

Well, I can't say that I was totally wrong... but I did have knee pain at about 12 minutes in (right knee). (Since I walk for the first 2 minutes of my run, that's only after 10 minutes of running. BOO!) So, I guess I still REALLY need a few chiropractic adjustments to get my body in shape for running again. This week, I'll plan at least 2 visits (maybe 3... I do plan on running in the AM again starting this week since daylight savings time has finally arrived! Hellooo sunshine!)

I also found this store called "One Tooth" which sells clothes similar to LuluLemon except it's a little different style and the pants are HALF the price! So I splurged on a few new outfits... which I'll try to take pics of for you soon! The pants are too long so I need to wash them before I hem them!

Always gives a boost to my fitness routine when I buy new gear!
I had a few years of painful knees Fitgirl - tried sports therapists, physios, doctors, various strengthening & fitness routines- you name it- BUT what worked for me was Osteopathy.
I am running again, taking it slowly, but running after 5 year hiatus and it feels SO GOOD!

Birthday Cake Weekends FINALLY caught up to me!

Thursday, March 11, 2010

For the past 3 week ends (since Valentine's day!) I've been eating either a slice of birthday cake (which I've frozen from Collin's Birthday Cake *BTW... my mother in law makes THE BEST birthday cake!) or a single Crave cupcake (which I got from Collin for Valentine's Day! Just what I wanted/ er... NEEDED, right?)

Everything was going great, until this past weekend!
We took a road trip to Edmonton to attend my BFF's son's Birthday party! (He turned ONE years old... I felt FLATTERED that she even thought of me to send me an invitation!) And I figured "I've been indulging in cake for the past 2 weekends, how will this be any different?"
"How?" I ask... Well, when there are 7 kids under 5 years old running around and there are no set meal times... a girl has got to eat SOMETHING! My BFF decided to make her son his cake... OMG, it was divine! (and I'm a birthday cake connoisseur! LOL) So I ate 2 peices!
But it was SOOO GOOD! There were even sugar cookies surrounding the cake to make it look like a crown! Check it out!

SOOOO.... needless to say, I ended up going way overboard on the food that day... and then the next day, I ate a half a tub of sour dinosaurs candies!
WTF? you may ask! ... well, that day we went to visit Collin's ailing father. And like a dummy, I had not packed any meals to take with me! I get pretty hungry every 2 or 3 hours and by lunch time, I was FAMISHED! Those dinosaurs didn't stand a chance with me and my hunger, but luckily Collin saw what I was doing and asked me to go get some lunch! I went and got a Wendy's taco salad. (I love them without the sour cream or dressing... just chili, cheese, a few taco chips and lettuce. YUM!)

emoticon NUMBERS GEEK ALERT: emoticon
here's the plot of my weight over the past 3 months... as you can see, the last week has thrown me off track slightly (circled in cyan) even though I had a pretty decent weighin today. (134.4)

My wedding goal weight (I'm loosely using this number as my "carrot" so to speak) is 132.

Moral of this story...

It's great that Collin noticed what was happening and had you get lunch. Sometimes when that hunger monster surfaces it's hard to think rationally. Just remember, if you wait until your wedding day to have cake again it will taste that much better! I can't believe it's so close. You must be so excited :-)

I'm not a cake lover---- so I can't relate. I think it's the European in me. I mean, when I go "home" we stop at the most devine torte place and they have crazily divine hand made torts. It's like you can't eat more than 1 slice, as you can imagine all the hard work it took to make it... we used to eat a slice every Sunday- Sunday was cake day and we'd go and pick out our slice ( if my Mom didn't make an apple torte or something). Admittedly, I've had some awesome wedding cake at some of the weddings I attended and some really, really crappy one- at my dearest friend's wedding - of all weddings. What can I say- I'm a cake snob-LOL!
Despite the cake ordeal, you're still going strong-- you got these last few weeks down.. GO JESS!

A change will do you good!

Adding this move to Monday's workout is all it took for my abs to be screaming out "OMG" for the past 2 days! (What gives? My body is definitely having a very sporatic time with recovery after my workouts!)

However, there's this *sick* side of me that loves the pain! And knowing that I achieved this sort of muscle soreness (without a trainer, to boot!) somehow validates the workout even more! (Isn't that crazy? As we get more fit, our muscles should naturally recover quicker and more effieiently after exercise!!! *as long as the proper nutrition guidelines are followed as well!)

Collin even got a good workout in yesterday! This is what he did:
20minutes cardio (recumbent bike)
30minutes lifting:

Super sets - 3 sets x15 reps
Chest press (25lbx2+bar) and Calf raises (15lbx2)
Bicep curls (12lbx2) and sumo squats (body weight)
Tricep extension (8lbs) and same elbow to knee crunches.

He was crying "No more, No more!" after his last set of abs! LOL Right now, I'm trying to slowly incorporate a few more leg exercises into his routine so that he can strengthen up his muscles and hopfully his knee pain improves. I had NO IDEA how poor his core strength was until we started to do this!
(I guess it's been so long since I've been that out of practice, it's hard for me to imagine NOT being able to finish one set of 15 basic crunches!)

This whole experience has been good for both of us! Collin knows he needs to get healthier not only for himself, but for his soon-to-be wife and kids! And helping Collin has really clued me in on just how POOR his fitness level really is! (I think I take fitness for granted, especially when the people I'm dealing with don't have an outward weight issue! ... and the fact that he can still beat me in a mountain bike race or hike faster then I ever can even without training!)

I hope I start to see improvements in his core strength, lower back pain and knee issues soon! Slow and steady! I think he's making huge progress...
NEXT ISSUE to tackle, his LOVE of BEER! LOL

I've been making up these routines, just a kind of hit it all at once circuit - they're hard to explain, but here's the last one I did and let me tell you I am some kinda SORE today!

Using 2 - 10lb weights: Pullover to Chest Press to one handed tricep press to crunches with both weights. I did 3 sets of 10, 3 times. So that would be 90 of each! OMG I just realized that! LOL

You are so RIGHT about not knowing people's REAL fitness levels based on what they look like. My husband can still run circles around me, even in my best shape, he can out run, lift, bike etc....that's when he's 30lbs overweight, and eating like crap! I'm constantly challenging himself to focus on how HE feels inside when he has a build up of healhty foods, and workouts vs. when he's not active, and eats processed food. He admits to feeling So much better, and younger when having a healhty lifestyle. Just what you mentioned: Being healthy for his wife-to-be and children to come, is a great goal to focus on.

Love you!

I know I'm still sore from Monday's barbell class. Especially my lower back. And I know it is partly because of my weak core/abs. I keep trying to strengthen them, but it doesn't seem to be working. Some of the scar tissue from a surgery makes it painful to do crunches sometimes. I just need to keep trying to figure out other moves that will still work for me.
Good luck with Collin. :)

Monday, March 08, 2010

... whatever that means to you... JUST DO IT!

Seriously, life is TOO SHORT and you really don't know what you've got until it's GONE!

Take my Father-in-Law... he's been fighting bone cancer and for 2 years has been undergoing treatments to control it and possibly kill it!?!

We went to see him this weekend and this was the first time since he's started his treatment that I've seen him look and behave like he's dying! He's barely holding it together... I know he's finally coming to terms with the sad reality that his days are numbered... it's really upsetting to see him in such a state! You want to help him, but at this point, there is nothing we can do for him! He's taking the last treatment option presented to him and it hasn't done anything except cause him more pain!

All he does all day (All he CAN DO) is sits in his special chair and watches TV! I know if he could, he'd be out working and making himself useful... but HE CAN'T physically do anything that he used to anymore! He's only 53 years old and he can barely walk around (with his walker) or get into his chair without pain (foot pain, hip pain, etc...)! The cancer has really sucked the life out of him... I can barely stand to think about it! I know this is really weighing heavily on Collin right now too! All I can do is try to be as positive of support for him as I can and talk or listen when he needs me!

So, for those of you who make excuses for why you can't get a workout in... think about the people who ONLY WISH they could get out of bed to pedal a bike or go for a walk care free! No matter what you current level of fitness is, USE IT to it's fullest potential and it will eventually reward you with a long life!

Take care of your body NOW, while you can... because once disease/illness sets in... it can be very hard to reverse! Think of your workouts and current good eating habits as an insurance plan on your life! It's worth all the effort and every dollar you invest in it!

Good habits now = happy, long, healthy life later on!!!
XOXO I love you all, Spark Friends!
Take Care of those you love (and most importantly, YOURSELF!) emoticon

Oh my God, Jess, I am so sorry to hear that. I know you mentioned him having cancer before, but I guess he just had not gotten this bad previously. You are so right to remind us never to take our fitness for granted, so true! And to thank our bodies for being so amazing!

I read a story today that gave me this same attitude. Every day is so, so precious, and we are so lucky that we are ABLE to be active! I'm so sorry to hear about your FIL; it must be so hard for your family.

Jessica, that has to be hard to just witness. I couldn't imagine seeing someone you care for so young in this situation. emoticon

Thanks for reminding me to live everday to it's fullest. We do benefit so much from eating healthy and being fit!

Aww, honey. I am so sorry for this to be happening! My dad died of cancer and they say that the only thing that kept him alive as long as it did was his attitude. But, no matter how great of an attitude we may have sometimes, that stupid cancer gets us!

It is SOOO IMPORTANT for us all to exercise and eat right and people don't take that seriously enough! Yes, sometimes we do get diseases even though we do the right things, but you have a better chance at recovery if you have lead a healthy life!!!

I am sending GREAT BIG cyber emoticon you guy's way. We all get too caught up in griping about things and hearing stories like this shows us all just how lucky we really are.

Love you, girl.

My heart breaks for Collin, and what he must feel watching his father become less vital. You are a great wife, to be there to listen and support however you can. You are so right about using our health RIGHT NOW...because we never know what the next day holds. I don't want to live with any past regrets=thanks for putting that fresh on my mind!

I have incredible empathy for you, your husband and for his dad. I have been close to dying from cancer and yet here I am. I am so glad I worked out last night. I struggle every day with exercising because of incredible fatigue. Your words just put another boost to my plan for biking today. Thanks for your honesty and transparency. Blessings for you and yours, Mary

I so hear you girl! I'm so happy Dan quit smoking-- I always had faith he'd do it, but hoped it wouldn't be too late...
I was able to run 5 miles this morning...and after being injured for 2 months ( not being able to run that is) it's just sooooo wonderful-- people must think I'm nutty, but it's so true--- pain-free days, a healthy body are most important!

I'm sorry for Collin- I'm sure it's so rough....I worry about my Mom a lot- she smokes and is overweight and there is nothing I can do, but encourage her to take care of herself!

So, yeh, you're 100% right and it's good to say this out loud- you can't say it enough really- we all need that reminder!

Thank you for the reminder. It's so easy to say "tomorrow" but who says there will be a tomorrow. Whatever you want in life, do it today. It is the only time that you are guaranteed!

Wishing you and Collin all the best. I'll keep his father in my prayers. emoticon

Oh, Jess, that's horribly sad. I'm so sorry for you and for Colin - hugs and more hugs. I agree with what you're saying. So many times I'm out running and I see people in electric wheelchairs or just sitting out by their front door in one and I am so very thankful that I CAN run. It makes me very appreciative of my health, youth and abilities!
