Dine and Dash

Monday, August 08, 2011

If you're an early bird when it comes to exercise, don't do it on an empty stomach in hopes of tapping into your fat stores. In a recent study, researchers at the University of Padua in Italy found that subjects who worked out after eating a healthy breakfast boosted their metabolism more than a group of fasting exercisers did. Even more surprising, those who fueled up first were still using more energy - especially from fat stores - a full 24 hours later.

"People who eat before exercising perform better," says Wayne Andersen, M.D. "Your workouts are more productive, you can push yourself harder, and your muscles keep burning calories longer."

Chow down about 30 minutes pre-session on a bowl of whole-grain cereal with lowfat milk, juice, and a banana - a good mix of protein, carbs, and electrolytes.

Sounds like a breakfast of champions!

I usually try to keep it pretty light before a morning workout. I usually just have a snack or part of what I'm going to eat for breakfast...not the entire thing. I'll have a cup of milk or a banana or yogurt or some nuts or something else small like that. Then after my workout is finished I eat the rest of my breakfast. I just give myself enough fuel for the workout. I can't have a lot of food or drink on my tummy when I workout.

Workout Motivation

Workout motivation waning? Enlist a buddy. emoticon When you exercise alone, it's easy to skip a session or not give it your all. Doing it with a friend makes you accountable and helps you push yourself harder - especially if your partner is fitter than you!

It's funny, because I really like exercising alone, but I do it
at the gym , so I'm not alone and I met a lot of nice people,
who become friends.

You are so right. The thing I love most about TOPS is the support I get from others. But in my chapter I also need the the challenges from others. Sparks gives me that. I get challenged and encouraged everyday. It is the best.

Thursday Thought

Thursday, August 04, 2011

The World Screaming Championships are held every year in Poland. The rules are simple: One by one, participants step forward and scream very, very loudly. Loudest scream wins. The record scream was produced in 2000 by Dagmara Stanek, who registered a shriek of 126.1 decibels—as loud as a jackhammer.

    Oh My! I can't imagine!

Yesterday in Upstate NY a tour bus carrying 30 passengers from Poland crashed on Interstate 81. I'll bet there was a lot of screaming going on then! Reports state they will be okay.
