STAY-ON-TRACK TIPS

Monday, April 05, 2010

After cranking up your willpower and sweating buckets at the gym, it can be a major letdown when the scale doesnít budge. In fact, a recent survey found that not seeing quick results is the biggest barrier to staying the course with your diet. Before you get discouraged, keep these 3 things in mind:

ITíS A SIMPLE MATH EQUATION To shed 1 pound a week, you need to expend 3,500 more calories than you take in. That means slashing 250 calories from your diet and burning the same amount through exercise daily. Crunch the numbers and itís easy to see why your transformation wonít happen overnight.

SLOW IS THE WAY TO GO Dropping 10-plus pounds in one week is almost a guarantee youíre losing water (2 cups equals a pound!), as well as glycogen, a carbohydrate stored in the liver and muscles for energy. You will look trimmer-but itís only temporary.

SIZE MATTERS Yes, your guy has only to give up his daily bowl of ice cream to shave inches off his belly. But he had an advantage: Heís bigger, which means he burns more calories overall. Instead of comparing your progress to his, put it into perspective. Remember, losing a pound of fat is like shedding four sticks of butter-which is a fabulous reward for all your hard work.

And he can grow hair on his face and chest! I'll take my "slower" loss any day!

Great blog! Thanks for the reminder. Sometimes the calories in a particular food item just aren't worth the effort it takes to burn them off. emoticon

There's slow and then there is too slow. When the weight is coming off, it is easier to stay on track but when you are doing every thing right and no weight loss it is not so easy to stay positive.

Bread, Wine and Cheese-Lovers Diet

Sunday, April 04, 2010

Go Mediterranean. Dieting doesn't have to be about deprivation, especially when you follow a Mediterranean-style way of eating. This diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, seeds, bread, dairy, fish, olive oil, poultry and wine. Most of the fats in this eating regimen come from healthy monounsaturated fats. In addition to weight loss, a Mediterranean diet also prevents heart disease and has been shown to increase lifespan.

MANTRA OF THE MONTH

Saturday, April 03, 2010

"I want what I have"

It's perfectly natural to desire more-more clothes, more friends, more money; it's only human. But obsessing over the things you're lacking can make you feel dissatisfied. This month take a moment to acknowledge what you do have-anything from your healthy body, which can carry you through a 6-mile run, to your best friend, who's really more like a sister. Remember that, while life can always get better, it's fulfilling to appreciate where you are.

Give Your Food A Flavor Boost

Friday, April 02, 2010

You love burgers, but you're watching your waistline. That doesn't mean you have to resort to eating a dry patty of meat. Sure, you'll want to ditch the chili, the cheese and the mayo. However, you can still enjoy a burger that packs a mean punch without overdoing it. Dress up your burger with healthy extras. Lettuce, pickles, tomato, avocado, salsa, mustard and ketchup are all acceptable toppings that won't tack on a ton of fat and calories.

I will not and have not given up burgers. I don't eat them very often and most of the time substitute a turkey burger for beef. As for toppings mustard has become a real favorite for me on lots of things.

An Aspirin A Day....

Thursday, April 01, 2010

Forget apples. Experts want you to pop an aspirin a day...and they say it could save your life. Aspirin therapy has made quite a name for itself over the years. According to the experts, aspirin therapy not only reduces the risk of damage during heart attacks, it also prevents stroke and future heart problems. Researchers recommend taking between 80 and 160 mg per day.
