That ’70s Show (1998–2006)

Creators Bonnie and Terry Turner wanted to tell stories about when they were teenagers in the 1970s. Music was a big part of their lives—hence the original title, Teenage Wasteland, a reference to the Who’s “Baba O’Riley.” Due to copyright concerns, they couldn’t use that title. Test audiences, however, loved the unnamed pilot for “that show about the ’70s,” or, as some were calling it, “that ’70s show.” So it became the working title until they could think of a better one. No one ever did.

The new Native American chief looked at the ominous sky and told his tribe to gather firewood for the winter. They got to work, but then the chief began to doubt his own judgment, and after a few days he called the U.S. Weather Bureau. The director of the bureau said, “There’s no doubt there will be a harsh winter!” This convinced the chief that he should have his tribe gather even more firewood.
A few days later he called the U.S. Weather Bureau again. The director told him, “It’s going to be a harsher winter than I originally thought.” Again the chief had his tribe gather wood like crazy.
This pattern went on for some time. Finally the chief called the director and asked, “What makes you so sure we’re going to have a harsh winter?”
“Because,” said the director, with confidence, “people have been gathering firewood like crazy!”

WEIRD TV MERCHANDISE

It was a TV event in 1975 when Gloria gave birth to her and Meathead’s first child, Joey, on All in the Family. A Joey doll, marketed as “Archie Bunker’s Grandson,” was released by Ideal Toys in 1976, and it became almost as controversial as All in the Family itself. That’s because Joey was the first doll that was, as the box said, “a physically correct male.” Joey had a penis … and it worked. (It was a “drink and wet” doll.) America wasn’t ready for a functioning, anatomically correct male doll, so Joey was pulled from store shelves after just a few months.

All in the Family landed on CBS in 1971 after ABC rejected it twice.

What now extinct flightless bird weighed close to a half-ton and stood 10 feet tall?

The elephant bird of Madagascar. A relative of the ostrich and emu, it’s believed to have been the largest bird ever. It disappeared soon after Madagascar was colonized in the 17th century. Scientists hope to bring the gigantic bird back through DNA extracted from eggshell fossils.

An artist had some paintings on display in a gallery, and he stopped in one day to ask the owner if there had been any interest in his work.
“I have good news and bad news,” the owner replied. “The good news is that a gentleman inquired about your paintings and wondered if they’d appreciate in value after your death. When I said yes, he bought all twelve!”
“That’s terrific!” the artist exclaimed. “So what’s the bad news?”
“Well,” the owner said, “the gentleman was your doctor.”

LIFE IMITATES TV

ON TV: In 2009, The Big Bang Theory’s Howard (Simon Helberg) designs a toilet for the International Space Station, and it breaks.

IN REAL LIFE: Not long after the episode aired, the ISS toilet broke.

ON TV: On a 1993 Seinfeld episode, Elaine’s (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) boyfriend shares the name of a killer, so she suggests he change it to something more “innocent,” like O. J.

IN REAL LIFE: A year later, football legend O. J. Simpson was arrested for double homicide.

(Eerie - emoticon )

Most watched TV interview: Barbara Walters talking with Monica Lewinsky (1999).

THE SCIENCE OF TV

All About TiVo

TiVo is the first and most recognizable brand name of digital video recorder (DVR), which records TV shows and stores them on a hard drive. It’s much more interactive than a VCR, allowing users to record two shows at once and pause live television. More than four million TiVo boxes have been sold in the US, and millions more off-brand DVRs have been issued by cable companies. While the device is revolutionary (a show’s airtime is no longer relevant), it has had negative effects on the TV industry—so many people are recording shows and fast-forwarding through the commercials that advertisers have begun to look for other ways to make an impression. Result: more prominent product placement.

Studies say viewers with DVRs actually watch more commercials than those without DVRs.

    Interesting bits of information...
I tried recording a night/evening show to watch during the day... I was very disappointed... I don't think I ever did that again. The show just was not the same as it would have been when originally broadcast. I did record lots of movies,,, so I could watch them over and over again whenever I wanted to see them.
I know.. more feed back than you wanted to hear. Just pretend I never left this comment. Hugs Audra
