Where did the Norway rat, also known as the brown rat, originate?

In northern China. The rats spread west to Europe in the 16th century, and were transported to North America in the mid-18th century aboard ships carrying grain from England. They were named for Norway in the belief that they had arrived in England aboard Norwegian vessels.

Saturday-night lights

The Dukes of Hazzard was a massive hit when it debuted in 1979. It was most popular in the South, but that created a problem. Since Dukes aired on Friday night at 9:00 P.M., so many people in Mississippi stayed home to watch the show that high-school football game attendance dropped dramatically. School districts responded by rescheduling football games for Saturday night.

Twelve ministers were on their way to a conference when their plane hit severe turbulence. One of them immediately called over a flight attendant. Wanting to help her stay calm, he said, “Please tell the pilot that everything will be all right because there are twelve extremely religious men on board.”
A few minutes later, the flight attendant came out of the cockpit and told the minister, “The pilot said that although he was pleased to learn that we have twelve holy men on board, he would still rather have just one good engine.”

The Flashmatic

In 1955, Zenith introduced a TV remote control system called the Flashmatic, which used four light-sensitive cells mounted in the corners of the TV cabinet. By shining a flashlight into it, one cell raised the volume, another lowered it, and the other two changed the channel. Only problem: The cells couldn’t distinguish between a flashlight and other light sources—like lamps or sunlight—so channels would often change without warning.

Two men had just arrived in prison and were led into the cell they’d be sharing. “When do you get out?” the first prisoner asked.
“I get out in 2021,” replied the second prisoner.
“Okay, I don’t get out until 2025,” the first prisoner said. “So you take the bunk nearest to the door.”

FABULOUS FLOPS

NBC’s fall 1983 schedule included nine new programs: Manimal, Jennifer Slept Here, Boone, Bay City Blues, We Got It Made, Mr. Smith, For Love and Honor, The Rousters, and The Yellow Rose. Harold reached the ripe old age of 100 and suddenly stopped going to church. Worried by Harold’s absence, his minister went to visit him. He found Harold in good health, so he asked, “Why, after all these years, don’t you ever come to church anymore?”
Harold looked around and lowered his voice. “You see,” he said, “when I got to be 85, I expected God to take me any day. But then I got to be 90, then 95, then 100. So I figured that God is busy and must have forgotten about me—and I don’t want to remind him!”

How many vodka martinis were among the 317 drinks James Bond consumed in Ian Fleming’s novels and short stories about Agent 007?

Only 19. The vodka martini may have been his favorite but it was far from his most frequent tipple. Bond’s drink count included whisky, 101 times; bourbon, 58; scotch, 38; sake, 35; and Champagne, 30.

The O.C. was a teen soap set in wealthy Newport Beach, in Southern California. Characters on The O.C. watched The Valley, a teen soap also set in a wealthy area of Southern California. The lead actor on The Valley is in his late 20s and plays a 16-year-old (just like his O.C. counterpart, Ben McKenzie), and two actors from The Valley, the ingenue and the nerd, are said to date in real life—just like O.C. stars Rachel Bilson and Adam Brody did at the time.
