THE REPLACEMENTS

Nine-year-old Jeremy Gelbwaks landed his first-ever acting role when he was cast as Chris, the drummer in the family band on The Partridge Family. But after one season, Jeremy had to quit because his father’s job required the family to move to Virginia. Another actor, Brian Forster, was quickly cast, and stayed on the show until its end. ABC reportedly didn’t receive a single letter or call about the switch.

Owen’s mother-in-law demanded that she be taken along when Owen and his wife, Teresa, went on a safari. Owen could think of nothing worse than going on a trip with this tough old woman, but he was afraid to say no. One evening, Teresa discovered that her mother was missing from their camp. She woke Owen up and insisted they search the surrounding jungle for her mother. Owen grabbed his hunting rifle and charged into the trees with Teresa. In a clearing not far from the camp, they came upon a chilling sight: His mother-in-law and a large lion stood facing each other, not ten feet apart. Teresa cried, “Owen, what are we going to do?!”
“Nothing,” he said. “The lion got himself into this mess—let him get himself out of it.”

What three products were promoted in the original Starbucks logo—used from 1971 until 1987?

Coffee, tea, and spices. When the logo was redesigned in 1987, coffee was the only product promoted. By 2011, no words remained on the logo, not even the company’s name.

THIS DAY IN TV

The Ed Sullivan Show (originally called Talk of the Town) debuted on this day in 1948.

* Prior to hosting his show, Sullivan wrote a Broadway gossip column for the New York Daily News, the most widely read newspaper in the US at the time. He parlayed that into a gig as emcee for the Daily News’s annual Harvest Moon Ball, which CBS aired. The network picked him to host a variety show in 1948.

* Guests on the first episode: Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, plus Broadway producers Rodgers and Hammerstein with a preview of South Pacific.

* The act that appeared most: comedy duo Wayne and Shuster, who performed Shakespeare-based sketches on the show 67 times.

Surprise - I am back! Wednesday 6-19-2013 Assortment

Wednesday, June 19, 2013

A woman went to see her doctor. “Doc, I need your help,” she said. “I find that I’m talking to myself all the time.”
“Are you in any pain?” the doctor asked.
“No,” she answered.
“In that case,” the doctor said, “don’t worry about it. Many people talk to themselves.”
“But, Doctor,” the woman cried, “you don’t know what a boring person I am!”

FABULOUS FLOP

My Big Fat Greek Life (2003)

The independently produced romantic comedy My Big Fat Greek Wedding was a surprise box-office hit in 2002, earning more than $240 million. It was written by the film’s star, Nia Vardalos, based on the real-life experiences of her husband, who was overwhelmed by her colorful Greek relatives. Before writing it as a film, however, Vardalos pitched the idea as a TV series to CBS, which turned her down. When the film became a hit, CBS made Vardalos an offer. With most of the movie’s main cast reprising their roles, the first episode of My Big Fat Greek Life attracted a large audience. But after seven episodes, viewers grew tired of the broad ethnic comedy, the ratings plummeted, and CBS canceled the show.
