Wednesday Assortment

Wednesday, April 24, 2013

Theodore had just retired and was having a discussion with his wife, Sylvia, about the future. “What would you do if I died before you?” Theodore asked.
Sylvia thought about it for a while and replied, “Oh, I’d probably share a house with several other single or widowed women. Since I’m still in good health, I think the other women could be a little younger than me.”
Then Sylvia asked Theodore, “What would you do if I died first?”
Theodore replied, “Probably the same thing.”

What European country kept the music to its national anthem but dropped the lyrics after its longtime dictator died?

Spain. The most recent lyrics for its “La Marcha Real” (The Royal March) were written for General Francisco Franco—and abandoned following his death and the restoration of the monarchy in 1975. No official lyrics have replaced them.

Late Night Lore

Joan Rivers vs. Victoria Principal

While guest-hosting The Tonight Show in 1983, Rivers interviewed Principal, then starring on Dallas. Principal remarked that she had just celebrated her 33rd birthday, then later claimed that she was the first American baby born in Japan immediately after WWII … which ended in 1945, meaning she was really 38. Rivers called her on it, and Principal left in a huff. From then on, Principal’s white lie became regular joke fodder for Rivers, who went on to host The Late Show on Fox in 1986. While interviewing Dallas costar Ken Kercheval, Rivers got the idea to call Principal at home to mockingly wish her a happy birthday. Rivers dialed the number and got a busy signal, so she asked an operator to break into the line, saying the phone number on TV. Principal still didn’t pick up, but was later inundated with prank phone calls. She successfully sued Rivers and Fox for $3 million.

FOREIGN SHOW: Japan’s Shoten

ENGLISH TRANSLATION: Jokes for Points

DETAILS: A Sunday-night TV staple in Japan since 1969, this game show pits six kimono-clad comedians against one another in a contest to see who can think up the best joke on a subject delivered by the host. (It’s sort of like Whose Line Is It Anyway?) The prize for the best joke in each round is a cushion called a zabuton, and the ultimate winner is the first comedian to earn ten cushions. After 40 years, it’s still a big hit. (In 2010, only the Winter Olympics drew more Japanese viewers.)

BEHIND THE SCENES
Hot dog!
In 2008, Alyson Hannigan of How I Met Your Mother announced that she was pregnant. The show is carefully plotted over many seasons, and her character, Lily, wasn’t supposed to be pregnant yet, so writers turned the sight of an increasingly and obviously pregnant Hannigan into a running gag—she was often seen standing behind large, round objects like globes and basketballs that did little to hide her belly. And in one episode, Lily recalls the time she won a hot-dog-eating contest. Viewers see her flashback, and in her moment of victory, lifts up her shirt to reveal her “very full stomach.”

During Lucille Ball’s 1952 pregnancy, censors required her condition to be referred to as “expecting.”

Prison Break Island

Stephen King’s novel The Running Man, later made into a movie, is set around a futuristic TV game show in which criminals are hunted down for sport. In 2001, a TV producer tried to turn the idea into a reality show. His plan was to put a dozen convicted felons (but “no murderers”) on a tropical island, as on Survivor. Then, it was planned, celebrities would track them down and recapture them. The last free convict would win $1 million, which would then be donated to one of his or her victims. Reportedly, the show had already booked one celebrity hunter—Lou Ferrigno (The Incredible Hulk)—but couldn’t find a studio willing to produce it.

(Yikes! Thank goodness this one never saw the light of day!)
