Retreat to happy thoughts
Find a mental “area of refuge.” Find ideas and memories that make you happy and turn to them when you find yourself dwelling on unpleasant thoughts.
A dentist was filling a cavity when he said to his patient, “Would you mind doing me a favor? Could you let out a loud, ear-splitting scream?”
“Sure,” said the patient, “but it doesn’t hurt too badly this time.”
“I know,” replied the dentist, “but I’ve got a waiting room full of patients, and I don’t want to miss the four o’clock baseball game.”
