Nutrigrain Bar vs. All-Bran Bar - Opinions please!

I posted this as a comment on someone's page and thought it'd be interesting to hear some of you opinions.... Please comment!

I've been "dieting" for 2-3 weeks now with a goal to loose 20-25 lbs by June 9th. I am officially down 10lbs!

I've found the best way is to be aware of your food choices and do you homework! Take a few extra minutes to compare the nutritional info. It may say "fat free" but be loaded with sugars, sodium or carbs. It's not always a clear choice or an easy one...

EXAMPLE: Strawberry Nutrigrain vs Oatmeal Cinnamon All-Bran Bar

120 Cal, 3g fat, 125mg sodium, 24g carbs (11g sugar + 3g fiber), 2g protein, O mg cholesterol

130 Cal, 5g fat, 105mg sodium, 21g carbs (9g sugar, 4g fiber + 8g starch), 2g protein, 5mg cholesterol

Which is the "better" choice? Not that easy is it? LOL

Personally I would choose the Nutrigrain Bar over the All-Bran.

Why? You ask...

BECAUSE: The first ingredient listed on the Nutrigrain Bar is "WHOLE GRAIN OATS" the first ingredient on the All-Bran bar is "WHEAT FLOUR"

With time this gets easier! YOU CAN DO IT!

    Honestly, I would stay very far away from both! They both have just way too much processed "junk" in them...not "real" food at all. You need something more natural...I don't know what half that stuff is in their ingredient lists. Not to mention all the added sugars in both--listed as sugar, dextrose, fructose, corn syrup! Ack!!!

How about a LARA Bar! Talk about natural...WOOHOO. For example the Cashew Cookie flavor has cashews & dates. That's it...that is the whole ingredient list! The Ginger Snap flavor...dates, almonds, pecans, ginger, cinnamon, cloves. Clearly ALL recognizable ingredients. If you look at their nutrition labels, you are going to immediately notice they have quite a bit more fat than your two bars. But fat isn't necessarily the enemy when it is coming from good sources, like nuts. The sugar grams may also cause you to question their "healthiness", but keep in mind the sugars are coming from natural sources (all fruit has sugar)...they are not adding in EXTRA sugar like your two bars do. And, if this is the "fattiest" thing you eat all day, then it's really not bad...because it is REAL food. Also, LARA bars contain 4-5 grams of FIBER plus 5-7 grams of PROTEIN, which is going to fill you up a lot longer than the other two. You can find them in most stores...even Target. Sorry, if this is a bit of a rant...I am just really passionate about eating real food, and helping people realize that a lot of the "healthy" stuff they think they are buying in stores is just that...a lot of processed "stuff". Good luck!

Remember your goal is greater than your struggle."

Something I say to myself repeatedly.

I say this at 1:00 am when I've hit a road block and I am "this close" to finishing a design for a client.

I say this as I sit at my day job hating every minute of it.

I say this when I get no respect from my step-son.

Today I said this when I felt hungry.

My goals are all within reach, but still everyday I need to be reminded of that.

I will work solely for myself someday.

I will quit my day job someday.

My step son will respect me someday.

And most importantly I will healthy again.

When everything comes together, the struggle will seem insignificant. And I will be exactly where I want to be... and happy!

Here I am...again.

My last attempt was good while it lasted, but didn't last long enough. I've heard that it takes 2 weeks to form a habit, so I've decided to start here. I will keep track of what I eat, when I exercise and most importantly, my weight. Baby steps.

I'm growing ever more fearful of the fact that if I don't change my lifestyle I WILL die of a heart attack. Heart disease runs predominantly on both sides of my family. My Dad is literally a heart attack waiting to happen. He has undergone 3 surgery's in the past year to open up his artery's and is now headed for a by-pass.

I'm scared for my health. And rightly so.

I know I don't eat as well as I should. I admit openly that I do not exercise. Ever. I don't walk. I don't go to the gym. I don't even try.

I'm my own worst enemy.

I woke up this morning and stepped on the scale. It didn't surprise me what it said - 158 lbs. I looked at myself in the mirror, muffin top hanging over my jeans. I feel disgusting. I literally tucked my rolls into my pants, put on a large sweater and left for work.

Time for change.

Here we go...

Help me find the time!

I'm a busy Mom, I work 2 jobs. My typical day is as followed:

5:00am - wake-up, feed the dog, grab a shower, get dressed, do hair and make-up
6:00am - Wake my son up, get him breakfast, make lunches, get him dressed and out the door by 6:45am.
7:00am - drop off son at daycare, drive to work,
7:30pm - 4:30pm - work. (Run errands at lunch if need be.)
5:00pm - Pick up son from daycare, home by 5:30pm
5:30pm - Make supper, eat supper, do dishes, help with homework.
7:00pm - bath time for kids, tidy-up the house
7:30pm - 8:30pm - Bed time ritual, brush teeth, read stories, rub backs and lights out!
8:30pm - 12:00am - work from home for 2nd job until I can't keep my eyes open any longer....hit the sack 'cuz I get to do it again tomorrow!!!

Someone PLEASE tell me where I can fit a workout in there somewhere!!! I'm desperate to find the time!

    That's a tough schedule...having 2 jobs is rough! My best suggestion for anyone trying to find the time is to start small. If you don't run errands 2 days a week could you go for a lunch time walk? Do you get a 15 min break or two at all? You could also walk around the block, do calf raises, squats or lunges at your desk. Does your building have stairs? You could take a few extra flights. Park further away, even if its only a few cars distance further. I think the thing we often forget is that SOMETHING is better than nothing and that exercise doesn't have to come in 30 min blocks of time....especially for moms! emoticon

emoticonTis the season!

I've been away - shopping - I don't have internet at home, so typically I blog, track, and count on my lunch. I live too far from work to shop after work , so I've been doing it on my lunch break to get it all done.

Looking back now, I can NOT believe it's been 21 days since I've last logged in!


So, Sorry to all my peeps if you feel I've abandoned you. I've still been actively trying to loose/maintain my weight. Just haven't gotten on here to log it. :(

The good news is I'm finally finished shopping, so you will be hearing A LOT more from me!

Originally, my goal was to loose 20 lbs by Dec 25th. To date, I'm down 10 lbs. I think I need to adjust my goal slightly. (10 lbs in 12 days seems a little unhealthy.) So I'll aim for 5 lbs.

...5 lbs in 12 days...The race is ON!

    I'm glad your back and a little jealous that you are finished with your shopping! My goal is to get all my stuff mailed by Wednesday...with the hope all will arrive in a timely manner!

5 lbs in 12 days sounds awesome! Good luck. My goal is to maintain until Jan 1..........and if I get lucky and lose a pound or two I'll be happy! LOL
