Taking a rest day

Monday, February 20, 2012

I think I have been over doing it in the gym. My shoulders are still sore internally and I think I need to rethink some of the strength training that I do. I really felt it during the long ride on Saturday. My whole shoulder harness was sore. Today is my normal day off from riding, so it will be a complete rest day.

I think you are wise to rethink it. You should not be sore all the time!

Second 1/2 century done for the year

Sunday, February 19, 2012

On Saturday, 2/18, I rode my second 1/2 century for the year. I started by doing 3, 15 minute ramps in the neighborhood. The ramps were 8 minutes @ 16 mph, then 5 minutes @ 18 mph, and then 2 minutes at 20 mph. 5 minute warm up prior and 5-10 minutes @ 15 mph between. I then rolled over to a 7/11 for some water and Gatorade and on out to wrap up 50 for the morning. I rode for a 1/2 hour at 6AM Sunday to get a few miles before the Noreaster with snow blew in. I can't wait for the temp to warm up. 2 of 12 scheduled 50 milers done for the year.

Pleasant commute

What a wonderfully pleasant ride to work this morning.

What a great morning ride!

Wednesday, February 15, 2012

As I started my morning commute, the Robins were out in great numbers. The temperature was about 40 degrees with no wind. As I rode through the neighborhood I could hear the singing of the Robins coming from every side. The traffic was fairly light coming down Big Bethel Road, which is normally a pretty busy road. When I turned down the road that goes past the college, I looked up and saw several V formations of ducks. Two signs of Spring in the first four miles. Just before I got to work, I saw four deer feeding by the woods. As I rode by as close as fifty feet, they ambled off into the woods without a care in the world. As I entered our parking lot, there was a flock of Canadian Geese by one of the ponds. What a great ride! What a great way to start the day! Just how much of that would I have missed, had I been inside a steel cage with wheels?

Rocking Saturday ride

Saturday, February 04, 2012

I went out to do my scheduled Saturday ride this afternoon. I did a 5 minute warm up followed by my first interval, 20 minutes at 16-17 mph. After that was a 5 minute RBI (Rest Between Interval) which was at about 15-15.5 mph. Next was a 10 minute interval at 17-19 mph, followed by another 5 minute RBI. The final interval was a 10 minutes at 17-20 mph. I had 55 minutes on the bike with another 80 minutes to go to finish the day's ride. I felt a few sprinkles so I kept it in the neighborhood. Those 80 minutes were supposed to be at about 15-16 mph, but ended up more like 17-19 mph. I am so pumped. I am following the cycling workouts drawn up by Selene Yeager in her book "Ride Your Way Lean", and they are really paying off. Not only am I loosing weight, but I am getting faster. Woo Hoo!!
