3rd day, 3rd ride.

Thursday, January 03, 2013

I kept the commute short today. I havenít been getting enough sleep lately and I can feel it in my legs. They were tired before I even started this morning. Darn NCAA Football Bowl Games. So 20 or 21 miles will be it for today. Tonight I will be going to bed earlier, period.

You're doing super. Don't worry about the mileage. Worry about consistency.

It is good start to the new year. Keep it up. Listen to your body. You can do whatever you put you mind to it.

20 miles still sounds pretty good for this time of year. Good luck catching up on your sleep!

Make sure you do, because lack of sleep is not good for anyone.
God bless you.

2013 day two

Wednesday, January 02, 2013

The rain was supposed to have moved out of the area by morning, but that wasnít the case. There was a steady drizzle for most of the ride to work, so the glasses came off in short order. It really wasnít that bad though. Traffic wasnít bad. There were some cars pulling into the Thomas Nelson Community College parking lot. Time for the Spring semester to begin. My thoughts drifted to the students entering their second sophomore semester. What are their plans? Who is graduating and heading into the work force? Who is continuing on to one of Virginiaís fine four year institutions? Who is sticking around for another semester because they were partying a little too hard as a freshman?
The highlight of the ride was getting to see a Blue Heron at the ponds near work. I always enjoy seeing and hearing the wildlife. Even if that means dodging the Canadian Goose crap on the sidewalks leading to my building. Thank goodness for full fenders.
I thought I would have to wipe dry the bike after the commute. However, by the time I had showered, it was fully dry. Gotta love that warm dry stairwell where I park my bike. I took the time for a lunchtime ride today. Did 12.5 miles doing loops on the lesser traveled roads near my work. It really took some motivation to go out while the wind chill is 32 degrees. You just have to want it badly enough. The ride home was fun as always. 31.84 miles for the day.

Way to go!! But remember that just because the road dirt has dried doesn't mean that the bike is clean. Not a bad idea to wipe it down when you get home.

That's certainly a good start to the year. I don't have the motivation to ride in that kind of weather. Way to go!

Those are some impressive miles, especially with it being cold and wet! Good for you for sticking with it despite the weather!! emoticon

First ride of the year.

Tuesday, January 01, 2013

I finished the year 2012 with 6115 miles. I managed to log the third place distance in our local ride club, Peninsula Bicycling Association (PBA). Now I look forward to 2013. Today a front was moving through which brought rain to the area. The idea was to get up and ride this morning before the front came through. When I awoke at 8 AM, I could hear that the rain had beaten me to the punch. At around noon the rain let up and so I headed out to meet for a club ride. The PBA had a ride scheduled for 1 PM beginning at Lake Biggins. I rode over to the lake arriving in the parking lot at 12:55. I did circles in the parking lot until 1 and headed out on the ride. I canít blame the others for not showing up. I am one of the few with fenders.
The ride drizzled rain from time to time, but for the most part I remained dry. There were plenty of walkers out and I wished them all a happy new year. Each of them returned my salutation with a smile. The ride was 32 miles long and not one jerk to be found. Yes, that includes drivers. Rare indeed. What a grand day to be out on a ride. I got to see Wood ducks on a few of the ponds I passed. There was a Blue Heron perched on a fallen tree in the James River. It is always a plus to see wildlife along the way during a ride. Yep, looking forward to a good riding year.

Sometimes the best rides are on 'iffy' days. Glad you had a good one.

I was able to get out and ride too. My buddy only wanted to go 20 miles so that's what we did. So far, you are ahead of me for the year.

I was happy to have gone for a hike today but I know I would have been over-the-moon if I had gotten a ride in. Great work!

Still ahead

Thursday, December 27, 2012

Pulling away slowly. I am now 62 miles ahead. There are only a couple of days left for riding. A normal commute on Friday and a 50 on Saturday should do it.

Pulling, for now

Sunday, December 23, 2012

At the beginning of this month I was 377 miles behind a club mate of mine. I was in fourth place and she was in third. Well, I have taken the lead as of today. I now have 6020 miles for the year and I am in third place by twelve miles. No time to slack off though. Jennifer can is a strong rider and won't take this lying down. The next week should be fun.

Well done. I was just happy that I made it to 200 for the month. Nothing like a little competition to spark your motivation. Good luck!
