Paul Revere's Ride

Friday, May 11, 2012

My son, who is a fifer with the 1st Michigan Fife & Drum Corps, went to Boston for the Patriot's Day celebrations to commemorate the events starting the Revolutionary War. We found a video of one of their performances whilst in Boston, at the Olde North Church. They are at the 6:44 mark, my son is the fifer on the end in front of the bass drum.

April Goal Results

Tuesday, May 08, 2012

1) Maintain my weight at +5 / -14 pounds
emoticon
Slacked off on the exercise & nutrition and am 6 pounds over maintenance range.

3) Do some sort of housecleaning or maintenance daily.
emoticon

5) Finalize my budget by the end of Jan and stick to it to pay off at least 3 loans by Dec.
emoticon

Still sticking to the budget, but because of the move & house updates I will not get all of the original loans paid off that I had planned for. One is done, the second will be done by year end, and I will pay off 2 small store cards as well. Once I am completely moved & settled into a new budget I can look at this again.

6) Ready to test for black belt by end of June:
6c) Make terminology flashcards by end of February; review weekly until testing
emoticon
Have not been reviewing each week

6d) Assist in 4 classes per month (20 total required)
emoticon
Ahead of schedule, have 14 classes of 12 needed by end of April; 6 more to go

6e) Learn and master sais kata
emoticon
Learning how to handle the sais, will push to begin learning the kata this month

6f) Keep running so as to maintain ability to run 2 miles in 18 minutes
emoticon
On my first track run I discovered I have “lost” 90 seconds somewhere in the last 4 months, need to find it again. Track sessions with Coach Ken begin next week.

6g) Be able to do 50 pushups in April; 55 in May; 60 in June
emoticon

7) Goal revamped – finish mailbox / light switches / outlets / floors / doors / ceiling fans / curtains before I move, timing TBD
emoticon
Finish permanent installation of the mailbox; the handyman is coming today to put in the doors & ceiling fans and I am waiting for Lowe’s to call for a time to come out and measure the floors. I will have the carpet and laminate ordered by the end of the month and installed in June; not what I want and was going to save for but what is cheapest to get done ASAP.

8) Run my first marathon by October 21
emoticon
Black belt test date is being pushed out to late July or August and I will not start training until after the test. I’m considering postponing this goal to April 2013 for the Paris marathon, which I've heard is not as focused on speed and qualifying and is instead much more relaxed, ideal for a first timer who is slow. Plus it's in Paris, 'nuff said.

9) Other goals as they occur to me.
emoticon
Received Lifetime C.P.M. certification (Certified Purchasing Manager) so never have to do continuing ed & recertify for this one again; scheduled exam for new C.P.S.M. certification (Certified Professional in Supply Management); got son applied to college; replaced mailbox; made a real to-do list; ran 2 half marathons; finally cancelled some subscriptions I wasn’t using

10) Have fun and stress less!
emoticon

11) NEW GOAL - weekly pushup challenge
emoticon
Doing 4-5 sets of pushups, 6 days per week. Currently at 5 sets of 27 plus extras during karate training class.

COMPLETED GOALS: emoticon
2) Become a half fanatic by the end of August
4) Break my dependence on Splenda
6b) Ni kyoso suro no kata approved in February; Bassai kata approved in March

Cold Showers

Wednesday, April 25, 2012

This morning I awoke to a blood curdling scream from my DD. I was halfway across my room before I even registered what I had heard.

She went to take a shower & was surprised by ice cold water.

Apparently the pilot light on the water heater went out last night.

What a way to wake up in the morning. I'm still shaky from the adrenaline surge, which is why I have already met my new goal of crossing off at least 1 thing from my to-do list each day.

And not only 1 goal...so far I have crossed of 3 with at least 3 more planned for today!

Go me!

OK, so these are the low hanging fruit but I'll take progress where I can get it. I'm not proud lol.

And track time starts again in a week or two so I'll soon get back up to speed with my 2 mile run (pun intended). I packed my lunch today for the first time in a couple weeks with plans to do so for the next 3 days (and then I will be in Mexico for 4 days). I have ideas for our dinners for the rest of the week so I will have home-made food to pack for lunch. Tomorrow is beef stew, then an eggplant casserole, pork roast, and some sort of chicken meal in the crock pot. And maybe the chicken tortilla soup recipe from PureWow in my inbox from a few days ago.

In unrelated news I got a text this am from my ex-husband, he wants to meet and talk.

For those who have missed it (since I never really officially made an announcement) I have a pending job transfer to my company's plant in France and I will be moving sometime in the next few months (probably, if HR gets moving with the paperwork). To France. With my DD, Stupid Dog and 3 cats. DS is probably staying home to start college and keeping 2 cats.

And my ex, having been a psycho H and ex-H, could have taken it very poorly, especially as he had threatened several times over the years we were married & divorcing that he would take the kids and run. I was actually expecting him to have a tantrum, but all he said when I told him 2 weeks ago was "OK".

And now he wants to talk. Ostensibly about our DS and my house but...

I don't have trust issues, I just flat out don't trust him at all. That's not an issue, that's smart.

Any fight that starts I will ultimately win. I just don't want to spend my time, effort and money proving the point. Again.

Nothing I can do about it until we talk Friday night so...on to my to do list.

Any recommendations for a really good app, one that allows you to enter several sub-tasks for a main task item?

All the best with your Ex. If you go in with a plan to stay calm, no matter what comes your way, you will probably get a better result.

And just sayin', yes, men can get weird - based solely on my own experience, I would say that is not a gender-specific trait when it comes to Ex's.

Wish I could suggest an app to get rid of your ex-H!! BUT I do have a really good task app. It's called 2Do (one word) from Guided Ways Technologies. I use it for EVERYTHING!! You can set up projects with sub-tasks under each project or just random tasks alone. I think it's great!

Paralysis

Tuesday, April 24, 2012

I have so much to do at home and at work in the next few months before I move. So much that it is completely overwhelming and I find myself just sort of dithering around accomplishing nothing because I don't know where to start. I tried making a list at home and it got so depressing that I went to bed and took a 4 hour nap.

Needless to say, nothing got accomplished that day!

And because I have been overwhelmed and stressed out by my theoretical to-do list (the actual list was getting too long to manage so I threw it away) my nutrition and exercise have sort of fallen off as well. So now I can also be stressed about being a few pounds up and a few minutes slow on my run.

What fun.

I can feel the vicious circle starting whereby I get behind so I get stressed so I get further behind so I get more stressed so I get further behind...etc. ad nauseum.

Time to start a new habit.

I've been really good about doing at least 1 thing to clean or maintain the house daily. Granted, some days that has simply been to make my bed but that is still an improvement. I've been doing it long enough now that it has become a habit, one I don't really have to think about anymore.

My new habit is to do at least one thing on my theoretical to-do list each day. I am off to a good start so far this week. Friday I called the handyman and left a message. Saturday I bribed my daughter to run the 5k this weekend (I am running the HM) and got my banking done. Sunday I met with a Scout and DS to finish their Personal Fitness merit badges. Monday the handyman called me back to let me know he has a real job now so no longer does handyman work, but at least he called me back! Yesterday I dug out all the paperwork my son needs to get an ID card for work/school (he doesn't get his driver's license until he gets a job and can pay for the insurance). Today I cancelled my account with a credit monitoring service I had enrolled in solely to build up my frequent flyer miles. And I put together a new mailbox post, installed the mailbox on it and put the house numbers on.

Tomorrow I return the extra satellite receiver and see how difficult it is going to be to remove the cross piece from the current mailbox post. The local paper also comes on Wed. so I can see if there are any handyman ads.

Nutrition wise I am again being more diligent in tracking and staying within range. Sunday I ran at the track with one of the other black belt candidates; Monday I ran and biked at the gym but today missed out due to working late, taking DS to meet with the lady from the community garden to discuss his Eagle Scout project and assembling the new mailbox & post.

And, of course, 5 sets of pushups 6 days per week. Although I do admit that Saturday was close. I went to bed at 11:30 pm and realized at 11:35 that I had not done them for the day. I spent the next 5 minutes arguing with myself and finally got up and did my sets so they would still count as day 6 for last week.

I shall probably have to start keeping a written list if I am truly going to make this a habit.

WOW!! That's a lot of stuff you got accomplished! WTG!! I find a list helps. Also tackling these types of projects by area...bedroom, kitchen, etc...helps me stay focused on the tasks at hand. Maybe instead of one really long list you can make a separate list for each area, put I tup in that area, then when you're there try to tick off an item. However you tackle it, I KNOW you will succeed....after all. You're FFK!!

March Goal Results

Monday, April 16, 2012

1) Maintain my weight at +5 / -14 pounds
emoticon emoticon emoticon

2) Become a half fanatic by the end of August
emoticon
Half Fanatic #2194!

3) Do some sort of housecleaning or maintenance daily.
emoticon emoticon emoticon

4) Break my dependence on Splenda - reduce to none per tea cup in March
emoticon
No Splenda at all for most of the month, until the last few days when traveling, when I started using a packet of Truvia. I am counting this as Goal Met since the ultimate goal was to reduce the amount of splenda consumed, which I have certainly done. I just don’t like drinking tea without some sweetener in it so for April I will finish the box of Splenda I have (1 packet per cup instead of my original 3) and then switch either to raw sugar or a stevia extract.

5) Finalize my budget by the end of Jan and stick to it to pay off at least 3 loans by Dec.
emoticon emoticon emoticon
Still sticking to the budget, but because of the move & house updates I will not get all of the original loans paid off that I had planned for. One is done, the second will be done by year end, and I will pay off 2 small store cards as well. Once I am completely moved & settled into a new budget I can look at this again.

6) Ready to test for black belt by end of June:
6a) 4 techniques approved in February
Removing this sub-goal as Sensei B refuses to do any more sign offs for me since I have declared my intention to test. Which is OK as in my original training several years ago I had already had everything signed off and I know what I need to work on.

6c) Make terminology flashcards by end of February; review weekly until testing
emoticon emoticon

6d) Assist in 4 classes per month (20 total required)
emoticon emoticon
Ahead of schedule, have 13 classes done with 7 more to go

6e) Write down basic overall demo plan by end of February; finalize by end of March; recruit volunteers and start practicing by end of April

Changing this goal. Due to the move I won’t be here to practice with anyone so I will demonstrate a weapon kata instead.

6f) Keep running so as to maintain ability to run 2 miles in 18 minutes
emoticon emoticon emoticon

6g) Be able to do 40 pushups in February; 45 in March; 50 in April; 55 in May; 60 in June
emoticon emoticon
45 done for March

6h) Start research by end of March; rough draft by end of April; final paper by end of May

Removing this goal as a term paper is no longer required. Instead there will be essay questions provided on the test date.

7) Finish replacing all the light switches and wall outlets by the end of March. Then focus on completing 1 room at a time instead of jumping all around the house and never really finishing anything. Complete the 3 in use bedrooms by the end of December. Completing a room involves replacing all moldings & trim, doors, light/ceiling fan and drapes
emoticon emoticon emoticon
The night I got back from Houston my son says “The stove hasn’t worked all week!” WTF? I never even touched any switches or outlets in the kitchen (although I need to since the ex-h installed them upside down years ago). So I spent time figuring that out instead of finishing the last handful of switches/outlets; I still have 2 light switches & 5 outlets to go. I had planned on finishing this in between travels but strange things have also started happening with some of the already done switches & I need to have the handyman or an electrician come out and figure it out. I think it has something to do with the switches themselves since if I put the old switches back the lights work just fine but do weird things with the new switches, like only turn on if something is plugged into an outlet or refuse to turn off.

8) Run my first marathon by October 21
emoticon emoticon emoticon
I will not even start training for this until after black belt testing, assuming in July. Might have to change or postpone this goal depending on what happens with the potential new position. I don’t see any marathons scheduled in France in October but I will keep looking.

9) Other goals as they occur to me.
emoticon emoticon emoticon
Nothing specific comes to mind for March

10) Have fun and stress less!
emoticon emoticon emoticon

11) NEW GOAL - weekly pushup challenge
emoticon
Doing 4-5 sets of pushups, 6 days per week. For last week, the week of 4/8/12 I completed a total of 765 for the week.

COMPLETED GOALS:
6b) Ni kyoso suro no kata approved in February; Bassai kata approved in March
