Back from China, Back to Work

Thursday, August 02, 2012

I had a wonderful trip to China with my daughter and my sister. We saw and did amazing things, and sweated more than I thought possible (it was very hot and humid!).

We took thousands of photos, but I have been overwhelmed with dealing with jet lag, going back to work, etc. My sister, however, has posted some photos on her blog - so if you are interested, please visit PUDLECRAZY's page and check it out!

I've totally enjoyed the China blogs and salute you and your dear sister both for making the trip and for taking us along!

Re-entry has to be disorienting (if you'll excuse the pun).

Reflections on my SP Name

Tuesday, May 29, 2012

When I joined SP on January 1st of this year, I felt heavy, sluggish, and generally yucky. I wanted to make a change. Thanks to my sister, another Sparker, I joined SP. I started a new eating plan, bought and used a Fitbit, and started doing instead of thinking about doing. I chose my user name, FABBYMAY, because I wanted to look and feel fabulous by May (specifically my birthday, which is today) - it is also a play on my real name.

So, now that May and my birthday have arrived, how do I feel? Well, I DO feel fabulous! I have lost 17 pounds. I can fit into clothes I haven't been able to wear in years. I take stairs whenever I can (caveat - in the city in which I live there are no buildings over 7 stories high). If there is a choice between a long way and a short cut I always walk the longer route. I love eating lots of veggies.

I no longer feel sluggish and tired all the time. I can bend over to tie my shoes without a big roll being in the way. I don't get out of breath going up lots of stairs or hiking hills. I can hold side planks for more than a few short seconds.

What next? Well, I will continue what I started in January. I still have some weight to lose (that belly roll is smaller, but needs work). Now that summer is here I am amping up my outdoor activities. I am still trying to transition from walking to jogging. I am anxiously awaiting my CSA to start so I can feast even more on fresh picked organic veggies. I will stay here on SP, where I get so much support from my fellow Sparkers.

I will also heed the birthday message I got today from the SP Team: "During the next year, reshuffle your priorities. Spend more time with family and friends, take care of your body and health by eating well and exercising regularly, and offer to help others in need. Discover what matters most to you, and make your daily life into a true reflection of those ideas, beliefs, and attitudes." - a most excellent message indeed!

17 Day Diet, Cycle 3 completed!

Thursday, February 23, 2012

Well, I promised I would blog when I got through cycle 3. This is when we are supposed to add more things into our daily eating, learn portion control, and get a good handle on how to have a healthy balance - in other words, a lot more freedom than the first two cycles. I found this difficult, because once I was not so restricted I tended to stretch things a bit and have "cheats" here and there. So, the short version of the story is, after one week I was up 4 pounds, but at the end of 17 days I was back to where I started at the beginning of the cycle - so no net gain or loss - which is actually a *good* thing, even if it is disappointing.

Now the idea is go back to either cycle 1 or cycle 2 for the next 17 days. I have guests in from out of town, which makes it difficult to follow a strict eating plan. So I am probably not going to go back fully until they leave. I will let you know how the next cycle goes!

On the fitness front, I have really been feeling SO much better than when I started on 1 January. I have increased my number of minutes, along with my strength, flexibility and endurance - woo hoo! I am trying out my new "barefoot" workout shoes - but I am still slowly getting used to them so I won't report on them now.

Wow, it sounds like you & I did something similar on C3, and you're really doing an awesome job at removing those pounds.

Good for you too, that you've decided to wait until your guests leave before resuming full speed ahead.

I found I had too many choices, on C3, and then of course the "cheating" didn't help. :o(

So, my ticker had to be revised up, a couple of pounds. I'm okay with it, as I was sick with vertigo, the flu, and now...the flu again. I just wasn't going to be too hard on myself.

Okay, I'm feeling pretty crummy & going to head to bed for a bit.

Keep up the great work, you're very inspiring.

: )

Also, you have to keep your eyes on the big picture. I started the 17 Day Diet on 1 January and am down 12.5 lbs the third week in February, so I averaged 2 lbs per week even though most of the weight loss was in the first 17 days.

For those of you who aren't familiar with this plan, you keep repeating the 3 17-day cycles until you reach your goal, then you move on to maintenance.

Yay improved fitness. I've been thinking about those barefoot workout shoes too (they look sooooo cool) so will be interested to know what you think . . . .

As for the weight thing: frustrating. I find it hard enough to eat well when I eat "out": but in the hostess role, hmmmmm. Really tough.

One good thing is there is a lot of flexibility. There is no hard fast rule that says you can not stay on cycle 3 for extra time to accommodate guests.

be careful with new shoes
and make sure they are tied that seems to be my downfall--literally

Sounds like you are learning alot about your body & what it needs! Way to go. I just posted in the 17DD under (those who have completed C3). Maybe you could post your experience there as well. This is really helpful. I experienced those similar things my first time around on C3, and it helped me for this time around. We live & learn.

You are doing GREAT, and very inspiring to see you persevere through the ups & downs.

Let us know how it goes with the new shoes. lol. My cousin is a true "barefooter". I'm always curious about the whole thing. haha.

**oops it was the "your first experience on C3" post. Not the "those who have completed C3" post.

Darn, that's a bit frustrating! At least you got back to where your started cycle 3. You have been making such great progress. It is hard when guests are there - unless they are me. emoticon

You really kicked up your activity level. That helps, too.

I think I'll wait for the report on your barefoot shoes before ordering. They may have some at our 'local' walking store.

17 Day Diet, Cycle 2 completed!

Saturday, February 04, 2012

I finished the second cycle and start the third today. For those who like to keep track of these things, I lost 7.4 lbs on the first cycle and 5 lbs on the second; best of all I lost 3 inches off my waist!

Here are things I have learned so far on the first 34 days of this eating plan:

My body does much better eating 4 small meals a day - I do not have the big peaks and valleys of energy or cravings during the day anymore.

I no longer crave carbs (I won't say that I don't occasionally wish I could have have a cookie, but you know what I mean).

I do better with more protein. This was an eye-opener for me, since I have never been very big into eating much protein.

Four words: veggies, veggies, veggies!

And finally, I will admit right here in public that I have not been 100% "pure" on this diet. I have had an occasional nonfat plain latte. I have had a few crackers when I wasn't supposed to. And I have snuck some nuts in here and there. The overall eating plan really works, and still works even if you aren't completely compliant. I am sure it would have been different if my "cheats" were cookies and not nonfat lattes!

So, on to the next phase, which is always a bit scary. I will report back in 17 more days!

I just downloaded this book to my kindle and after reading the book have decided to start this plan on Sunday. I have been more a carb and vegetable, nuts person - so this is going to be different for me. I am hoping it gives me more energy along with the weight loss. Thanks for posting this.

I need a lot of protein, too. My hypoglycemia keeps me in touch with that need by making me really, really cranky when I haven't had enough. I am liking the Jillian Michael's vanilla protein powder in my smoothies. I am not certain how that fits into your 17 day diet plan.

I hope your days are warming up and you are starting to have some sunshine.

MY sister

Wednesday, January 25, 2012

Thanks to my sister, PUDLECRAZY, I not only joined SP and bought a fitbit, but I also have a bunch of new SP friends! Thanks to all of you for the sweet messages and kind thoughts.

You might not know this, but my sister is also a very talented maker of dollhouses, fairy dolls, and tiny furniture and accessories. She gave my daughter a dollhouse kit last summer and with her help, we finally finished it! Check it out in my photo section. We have found yet another hobby to occupy us!

Too bad we have to actually have jobs and work instead of having lots more time for the fun stuff.
