Priorities

Monday, January 02, 2012

I made a choice this morning. I went to bed last night at a stupidly late time, but hey, it was for a good cause! I was Sparking!!!!!

Anyhoo, I had planned on getting up at 4:45 to hit the gym, but when the alarm went off, I realized that I had only had 5 hours of sleep. In order to get the recommended 8 hours, I needed to sleep until 7:45.

So, I did.

I made the decision because I need to have priorities in this journey, and these priorities need to be made in order for what is best for me at any given time. In this instance, a good night's sleep takes precedence over a super early morning workout. Because I have trouble getting a good night's sleep sometimes, and I absolutely KNOW that a lot of my overeating or binge eating in the past was due to being tired (or bored, but that's another blog in the future).

Besides, if I place a good amount of importance into my workout, I can ALWAYS make the choice to hit the gym at a later time in the day. Or I can make excuses, which are legion, and not go. So, when DH got up I asked him if he would go to the gym with me after work today (my mom is watching Kaylee), and he said yes! Woohoo!

Therefore, by making sleep a priority, I now have had 8 hours of sleep plus I will ensure my workout will be done today. WIN-WIN!!!

I just know this month is going to have a fabulous result because I will be putting in the time and effort, and I have my priorities straight. About darned time!!!!

Great decision to get your sleep, Erin! Sleep is soooooo important. I have trouble sleeping, too. So, definitely, when sleep is cooperating, I say go for it! That way, when you do exercise later, you'll have a much better workout than if you dragged yourself yawning through a super-early morning workout.

I always binge when I'm tired - ALWAYS. I try to avoid the lack of sleep for that reason. Good job on being flexible and still getting your workout in - and since you put it in your blog you are more likely not to back out later!

That is awesome!!! I need to make sleep more of a priority also!! I went to the gym at 4:45am today, and was so depressed by my last weigh-in for my gym contest (I gained 3 pounds thus week and 4 pounds last week), that when I came hone at 5:30am so dh could go to work, I didn't workout anymore in the basement like I normally do. I thought I could try to get more sleep, but just laid in bed, so not only did I only workout for 40 minutes, but I wasted time doing nothing in bed!!!! I hate that!!!! Good for you being able to go back to sleep!!!!

PUPPY CHOW!

Sunday, January 01, 2012

I went to my family's house tonight for the BIG football game (Giants vs Cowboys) and there were SO many temptations.

I will NOT list everything that was there, but I chose the few that I love and had my share, which included:
~ 7-layer dip (half cup) with 7 tortilla chips
~ 3 bites of a cheese quesadilla
~ 1-1/2 stuffed mushrooms (the half was basically the mushroom with no filling because I didn't care for the sausage filling
~ 15 grape tomatoes (yum!!)
~ cocktail shrimp (3 oz)

Then, the sweets:
~ Half of a scotcheroo (or Special K Bar)
~ half cup of puppy chow (or Muddy Buddies)

I had eaten light throughout the day going into this, and I did eat more than I was hoping I would have, with the results being a total of just over 2000 calories, but I had fun, and I don't feel guilty about it.

I am on my way to a great 2012 as I have done what I planned to do goal-wise: I tracked ALL of my food, even knowing I would go "way" over my 1550 calorie limit (usually I would stop tracking the moment I would go over), I drank just over 2 bottles of water, I ran for over 30 minutes/3 miles today, and I didn't binge.

I was going to wait to blog this tomorrow, but I didn't want to forget what I was going to write about!

Well, better get to sleep. I am getting up at 4:45 to get to the gym at 5! I love, love, love going super early, and then catching an hour or two of sleep again before Kaylee is up for the day. I need to get to bed earlier tomorrow night though :o}

I too love going to the gym early in the morning! It's such a nice time to go with so few people there and you can really focus on yourself and make it your special time :) And kudos for continuing to track even though you knew you'd be over. I do that too and it makes a world of difference. Even though I go over, it makes me more accountable and less likely to scrap the whole day. You should be proud of yourself!

Happy New Year to me!!!

Sunday, January 01, 2012

Well, I already did a blog about my goals for 2012, but I wanted to put a blog in for today because...well, because I want to :o}

I had so many temptations yesterday, including a dinner at a friends followed by a movie where I was surrounded by their popcorn and Twizzlers, followed by a stop at Green Mill where appetizers were had (Thai egg rolls and coconut chicken) along with drinks, and then champagne to ring in the new year.

I had a small dinner there, and NO popcorn OR Twizzlers, NO drinks (I shouldn't be drinking with my meds anyway), 3 bites of appetizers, and 2 sips of champagne.

I call that a win.

This time, I started a week before January 1, and so today, though filled with a lot of hope and promise, still feels like most of the days this week. For sure, I feel motivated. I do feel inspired. I feel, for the first time in a long time, that I am going to "go the distance" and let NOTHING stop me, especially not myself.

Tonight will be a test of wills for me. My mom is having a million appetizers for the football game (we are all going, it's a huge game for DH). I will have shrimp and veggies available for me, so that is going to have to be enough. I may allow myself to have a bit of something that I really love, but I do need to stay away from the sugar, because I don't stop at one ever.

Well, I am going to head to the gym now. It's most likely going to be packed but at least at Planet Fitness they have a million treadmills so at least I'll get one!

P.S. Today was supposed to be the Resolution Fun Run, but with the combination of tons of ice (it's been raining/snowing here and then freezing) plus a crazy wind out there, I just don't feel comfortable running outside. No need to put myself in a dangerous situation (I don't fall gracefully).

Happy New Years, Sparkland!!! This will be a wonderful year, and I look forward to so much good happening for me, because I choose it to be good.

2012 Goals (well, half of 2012)

Saturday, December 31, 2011

I have thought about this, and thought, and thought. What should I do differently for my goals this year? What should be the focus? How do I make sure I keep these goals in mind and fresh?

So here is my plan with my various goals, my aspirations but in a MONTHLY format for the first 6 months, with a recap and goals for the other 6 months in July 2012:

~JANUARY~

Health/Nutrition:
~Track my foods at least 20 days this month.
~Drink at least 2 bottles of water a day.
~Limit my eating out, but if I do to work them into my tracking, and NOT eat what I CAN'T track.
~Make as much from scratch as I can and start backing away from processed food whenever possible.

Fitness/Races:
~Run the Resolution Fun Run on January 1.
~Stick to my training on my calendar which includes my strength training, stretching, running, and crosstraining. Take rest days when needed, but not fall out of the routine because of laziness.

Weight: This will now be a range (setting a specific goal of weight sets me up for a failure most of the time). My goal weight range for the end of this month is 169-173.

~FEBRUARY~

Health/Nutrition:
~Track my foods at least 21 days this month.
~Drink at least 2 bottles of water a day.
~Same as January.
~Same as January.

Fitness/Races:
~Run the Frozen Feat 10K on February 11.
~Same as January.

Weight: My goal weight range for the end of this month is 161-165.

~MARCH~

Health/Nutrition:
~Track my foods at least 22 days this month.
~Drink at least 3 bottles of water a day.
~Same as January.
~Same as January.

Fitness/Races:
~Run the Get Lucky 7K on March 17.
~Same as January.

Weight: My goal weight range for the end of this month is 152-156.

~APRIL~

Health/Nutrition:
~Track my foods at least 23 days this month.
~Drink at least 3 bottles of water a day.
~Same as January.
~Same as January.

Fitness/Races:
~No races scheduled yet.
~Same as January.

Weight: My goal weight range for the end of this month is 142-146.

~MAY~

Health/Nutrition:
~Track my foods at least 23 days this month.
~Drink at least 3-4 bottles of water a day.
~Same as January.
~Same as January.

Fitness/Races:
~Run the Fargo 5K on May 18 and Half Marathon on May 19 (Go Far Challenge) with friends and fellow Sparkers.
~Same as January.

Weight: My goal weight range for the end of this month is 142-145 and to start maintenance.

~JUNE~

Health/Nutrition:
~Track my foods at least 24 days this month.
~Drink at least 3-4 bottles of water a day.
~Same as January.
~Same as January.

Fitness/Races:
~No races scheduled.
~Same as January.

Weight: Maintenance if goal weight is reached.

~JULY~

Health/Nutrition:
~Track my foods at least 24 days this month.
~Drink at least 3 bottles of water a day.
~Same as January.
~Same as January.

Fitness/Races:
~Firecracker 5K/10K (not sure which yet and the Cats Incredible 5K or half marathon (again not sure which).
~Same as January.

Weight: Maintenance if goal weight achieved.

I will write these down and tack them up next to my computer so I see them at least 5 days a week, and be aware of them.

I kept things more simple this time around, and I hope to achieve all I can, but make sure that I am more aware and more focused this year. :o}

A look back through the year....

Saturday, December 31, 2011

I remember the beginning of this year, and knowing I was on a plateau that wasn't a plateau really (just the sum of my backsliding ever so slightly, but enough so I was maintaining instead of losing). I remember really getting psyched to lose a ton more weight, to run a marathon, and to go on vacation to Cancun. Was 2011 my year to shine? Yes and no. First, I'll go through my goals for the year that I posted last year on January 1-ish and how I did:

1. Lose 25 more pounds and/or just plan on getting to the weight that I finally become the most comfortable at.

This truly went in the opposite direction. I not only did NOT lose 25 pounds, I gained 20+ pounds instead. True, those 20 pounds were gained in the last 2+ months only, and I did a rather good job of maintaining it otherwise, but still, there is the end result.

2. Run as many 5K's as I can, get in as many 10K's, another half marathon, and my first marathon.

Hmmm....Okay, so these are the races I did:
~ Frozen Feat 10K (58:30)
~ Get Lucky 7K (42:12)
~ Run For Hope 5K (did this with my sister - 55-ish minutes)
~ Firecracker 5K (30:15)
~ Thanksgiving Prediction Turkey Trot (32:56)

I really had a LOT more planned, but circumstances kept coming up (I got injured in March while training for the marathon which took me out of training for 2 months, then I had LASIK surgery the day before the 5K and half marathon I was registered for in Fargo, and rain was predicted, so I bowed out...the Warrior Dash I had planned in July was cancelled due to my little girl being very sick, and then I just made excuses to not do races in August or September).

3. Wear more than 1 swimsuit this summer including at least a monokini if not the bikini I have right now.

Hehe. No monokini and definitely no bikini. I did wear a two-piece in Cancun along with my racing swimsuit and felt comfortable in both. The two-piece didn't show more skin than a regular swimsuit though. I really don't feel bad that I didn't completely reach this goal.

4. Continue to spend as much time as I possibly can with my family.

I feel I did this. My priority has definitely been to be with my family. I don't always "feel" like the best mom or wife, but I know that I really am a great mom, and that I am a great wife even though I am not "perfect"...something I am working on.

5. Go back to school full time (pre-Pharmacy at UND) the fall of 2011.

Nopers!!!! We decided that it just isn't a good idea to start school right now, to work on paying down our debts, and to work on the career I am in now. I may go back to school at some point in the future, but most likely the path I will follow will be nursing, and eventually become a nurse practitioner, that way I can do all of my schooling here, and not down in Fargo. Again, not bummed that I didn't complete this goal.

6. Go on vacation to another country.

So Done!!! I went to Cancun. Just a wonderful vacation.

7. Take a stay-cation in August before school starts (for both me AND DH, who is a teacher).

I didn't do this, instead taking the staycation this last week.

8. Try new and exciting things to keep things fresh, such as Pilates, yoga, cross-country skiing in the winter, maybe start training for a triathlon this summer.

Wow, I did none of these! I have to admit, I didn't write down these goals other than in this blog 1 year ago, and that is something I will have to rectify this year by actually having these goals visible on my desk in my office.

9. My main goal? Is to just be the best that I can be, and do the best that I can do. And to be proud of myself for that.

I intermittently did this throughout the year. I would say I did 50/50, and though I wish I did better, I cannot stay in the past, and I need to just move forward.

I think it is time to stop blogging, go to bed (I am going to bed later than intended, but felt a need to get this all written down), and I plan on thinking about my goals (my REASONABLE goals) for 2012.

I am moving forward with you. We can't change the past but we can build a heck of a future.

After 22 years of marriage I have learned there is no such thing as a perfect wife or husband, lol....nope not one. We just do our best and we are both fortunate to have husbands that love us just the way we are...woo hoo!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
