Gonna Up the Yoga

Monday, March 08, 2010

Even though I almost always listen to a podcast while I walk, I tend to space out during parts of it and take advantage of the time to think. This morning I was pondering yoga. Every time I read my Yoga Journal magazine, and every time I do yoga, I think, "dang I love this, I need to do it more!" Yoga just helps me so much both mentally and physically - relaxes me and energizes me, if that makes any sense, and with my arthritis it really seems to help keep my joints moving. Helps my posture too, which needs all the help it can get! Anyhow, I recently incorporated one day a week of yoga or weights (alternate weeks) into my workout schedule. I think I may change that up and try to do yoga and weights each week - that still gives me four days of cardio since I'm exercising 6 days/week now.

Staying Away From the Scale for a While

Sunday, March 07, 2010

For a while I was weighing in every Sunday morning. But it was an exercise (oops, no pun intended!) in frustration, because the scale just wasn't moving. Last Sunday I got busy and just never got around to weighing myself, and it was kind of nice not to have that little downer in my Sunday morning. So today I decided to heck with it, I'm going to stay off the scale for a bit and just focus on doing things right.

Haven't formally exercised this weekend, but I'd say I've burned my share of calories! We're getting our backyard redone, and they told us we could save $800 in labor if we broke up our old brick patio ourselves. We did a bunch last weekend, and went at it hard yesterday for several hours because they're supposed to come start this week. So between going up and down the two steps and back and forth, taking bricks and stacking them (we're hoping they can reuse most of them because they're a buck a pop), I got my stair work in. ;-) And I also spent a lot of time sitting and chiseling mortar off individual bricks, which is actually hard work because you position the chisel on the brick and then bang on it with a hammer. We're done breaking up the patio, but have to finish breaking up the brick today. :-p

Hope everyone is going to get out and enjoy what looks to be a stunningly beautiful day!

I understand exactly how you feel. I think I am going to try this too.

I'm glad to read that I'm not alone. Best of luck in your continued weight loss journey!

What I Have Learned

Friday, March 05, 2010

Sometimes it's useful to browse back through past blogs and see what I've learned. Here goes:

-I try to give my 5-year-old daughter a balanced lunch to take to school - I should treat myself the same way.

-I am capable of getting up godawful early and exercising.

-I won't die if I walk when it's in the 30s or it's raining, or if I'm dead tired.

-Drinking water all day long helps reduce my appetite and snacking.

-Tracking my food, even one day a week, helps keep me mindful of what I'm eating.

-If weights don't feel like a "real" workout, it's time to increase!

-If I count out a serving of crackers and put the box away, I'll stick to it.

-I'm in my 40s now and the pounds are not going to magically melt away. Deal with it.

-Mixing up my workouts keeps me motivated and keeps me from slacking.

-Eating out does not have to equal a 3000 calorie meal.

-Even if I"m not losing weight, I'm getting more fit!

Health and Wellness Month at School

Tuesday, March 02, 2010

My daughter's school is celebrating March as "Health and Wellness Month." The kindergarten teacher sent home a March calendar yesterday, and we are supposed to write down each day, what fruit and/or vegetable Kate had for lunch. I think it's a great idea - helps us keep in mind what we're making her for lunch (or what she's eating at the cafeteria, depending on the day), and of course it's an easy teaching tool.

Why Does Exercise Give Me Confidence?

Monday, March 01, 2010

I was pondering this on my walk this morning, and here's what I came up with:

Because I'm doing it 6 days a week, which I never would have thought I could do.

Because I get up crazy early to do it, another thing I wouldn't have thought I was capable of.

Because now I don't feel like an idiot huffing up stairs, since I'm getting more fit.

Because when people ask me how I fit it in and I say I get up at 5:45 and just do it, they say "WOW."

Because on days like today, when I'm already tired 10 minutes into my walk, I have the determination to push on through and finish.
