Undecided if I should push through with my exercise.........

Wednesday, July 25, 2012

Have you had DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) that was so bad that you can't even walk up the stairs properly. Well, I've been having very bad DOMS for months now. Ever since I started my Pilates program.

It even hurts to get in and out of a car. My friend told me I should push through with the exercise anyway. Should I? I don't want my muscles to get weaker because they had no chance to recover! I've been resting for 5 days now. But I have been going on gentle walks.

Should I do more Pilates tonight or tomorrow?

Oh, btw, I get my Pilates workouts here : www.blogilates.com

Years ago when Pilates first became popular, a woman I know wound up in the hospital due to those exercises. You may be putting undue strain on your back or spinal nerves. Check out with a chiropractor, or even change to different type exercises. Not every body can handle certain methodologies; everyone's different, but you knew that! Take care. emoticon emoticon

Go get it checked out. Muscle sorriness from working out only lasts a couple of days.

Maybe you should consult a professional exercise trainer or better still your doctor. I hope you did not cause any injury to yourself. Take care!

If it is just sore muscles you should take a rest day and then work through it. Have you ever tried a foam roller? They don't feel very nice but are wonderful for working out sore muscles. I would also look into getting some glutamine or a supplements with glutamine and BCAAs which help muscle repair.

EOWYN I have been following your blog for a long time now and it seems like you are always sore. I feel you have to be overdoing it when you exercise. my opinion is that you should do more walking and only exercise say 10 to 15 minutes per session if you decide to exercise. I would only exercise on an every other day basis too. If you are sore, it means you are hurting yourself especially to the degree you describe. You may want to talk to your dr about exercising with your health issues as well as that may be playing a large part in your soreness. emoticon Ruthie

If its really bad - like to the point where I am injured- I would speak my with my doctor. but in general- i will push through the pain..
Maybe try doing some yoga or a nice stretching routine- i usually find that a few minutes of warm up (maybe walking for 5minutes briskly, jogging in place for 30s, some jumping jacks, anything to get your heart rate up and blood going, muscles warm) and then doing some really good stretching will help(holding each poistion for at least 30s).. and then doing your work out - or even going for another 30minute walk and then a REALLY good cool down with long stretching works (holding each poistion for at least 30s) best for me.
usually the next day i feel like a champ.
if you are on day 5 of your muscles being sore, you should see your doctor. DOMS should only last 72 hours max... also try a hot bath after working out...

I think it depends on how bad it is. When it's as bad as you seem to be describing, I usually take a day or two off to recover (this usually happens the first day or two after re-starting an exercise program). If it's mild - like I can still walk right ;), I will usually try to push through. I think you know your body best. Sometimes it's best to rest!

If it's truly DOMS, exercise is usually helpful in temporarily relieving the pain. I almost always exercise through DOMS. If it's an injury, completely different story.

I suppose I have to make an allowance for Tuesdays!

Tuesday, July 24, 2012

I always, always overeat on Tuesdays! Because I have home fellowship on Tuesdays. And today, I went to McDonald's with a friend, that is why my calories are waaaaay up today. I only had an apple pie and medium fries but that is already soooo calorific.

Oh well, I suppose I should make allowance for myself on Tuesdays. I usually overeat my calorie range on Tuesdays...........

I thought I was being good by forgoing dinner today, but that trip to McD's has already almost put me over! Grrrrr!

Reminds me of my Thursdays: I always have fries at the pub on Thursdays, so I put that into my tracker first to remind me to cut down the rest of the day :)

There are some good choices you can make at McD's...but it's hard when others are having the 'good' stuff! Persevere! You will make good habits become easier, in time!

You could make an allowance for Tuesday's. I think that's reasonable. But an Apple Pie is only 250 calories. That's not much.

Sometimes, I feel like you do too... It's easy to advise someone the right thing to do - go to bed when you are tired - your body needs rest... you know what I mean.
Don't worry, tomorrow will be better! emoticon

Allergy on my ankles..........

Sunday, July 22, 2012

I've been feeling itchy all over my ankles! My Dad says it's an allergy to something I ate! I hope it's not something serious! Now my ankles are not pretty anymore because I have scratched some skin off and you know what happens when we do that, it turns brown!

I've put the anti-allergy cream on my ankles but they still itch real bad! I hope it's not shingles or something!

Ahh...so sorry. I will say be glad it's just your ankles. Whatever doesn't like me (going on about 2 years off and on now), makes my legs itch. Yep, hip to ankle. And, it's not pretty. Hope yours clears up soon.

How is your ankles doing today? If they are not healing after you apply anti-allergy cream, maybe you should consult the doctor.
Take care!

you might try oatmeal bath - works wonders - Aveeno sell it
Also could be a soap allergy - my son used to break out. The socks he wore had soap residue in them and rubbed the ankles

Taking it easy for a while.....

Saturday, July 21, 2012

Because of all those strenuous plank style Pilates exercises I've been doing, my shoulders are still aching. I decided to take it easy and just go for a walk. Before I knew it, I had walked for 40 minutes. It didn't even feel like a long time at all!

I can't even scratch the opposite shoulder because I'm aching too much! Particularly my left shoulder. Every time I try to used my left hand to scratch my right shoulder, it's like "Ow!".

So, no more plank style Pilates till my left shoulder recovers :(

Sorry about the pain in your shoulder. Walking is a great form of exercise. Sometimes I walk in the pool to burn some extra calories and it helps me with the pain in my joints. emoticon

Good job on the 40 minute walk. Take it easy with your shoulder. Don't not do anything either it, stretch it some. Like the saying says use it or lose it. Just don't push it hard.
