Why do I feel I'm being discriminated?

Wednesday, June 06, 2012

I'm a woman in her middle ages. Not old but not too young either. But I feel discriminated against in the dialysis center I go to for being 'too young'. Even though I always make an effort to come early to start my treatment early, they always serve the older patients first, no matter how late they come.

I mean, they do prime my machine for me, but they prime an older person's machine first. And they don't even open my dressing set, I have to do that myself. But they get ready the older person's dressing set. I mean, what's the point of doing something if you're only going to do it halfway? By that I mean, if you're already done 70% of the work, why not do 100%, it's not so much of a stretch to do so, is it?

When I pointed out the discrimination, the Head Nurse lost her temper and threatened to delay my next treatment by 30 minutes regardless of what time I turned up. I think this is too much. I'm being discriminated for being one of the younger patients there.

I can't help feeling upset.

Do they not have laws in your land threatening to delay your treatment. You need to go to the higher ups. This is absolutely terrible & I am sorry you have to go through this kind of treatment from a nurse , you have enough to deal with your health let alone threats to delay your treatment Take Care

Sounds like some of the nurses need to be patients for a while to find out the other side. Why not just find and pass out on the floor sometime. Just lay on the floor and do nothing. Okay, maybe it's not the best idea but could give the nurses a bit of a wake up call.

I meant getting ready the dressing set, not doing the dressing. Like, opening the dressings set, soaking half the cotton wool balls with spirit, getting ready the dialysis needles. And prepping the table with a plastic bag for thrash. Simple, right? But they act like doing it for me is like pulling teeth! Ridiculous!

Oh my goodness, I am so sorry to hear that! That is just not right. Is there another center you could go to?

That is certainly not right! You are right to be upset!

Is there a different dialysis center that you can go to? emoticon

You're right, there is no reason that you should received poorer treatment because you happen to be younger. I would definitely speak to someone higher-up. Your time is worth just as much as anyone else's. You spoke to the head-nurse, you may have to speak to someone higher than her, not necessarily the doctor, but maybe an owner, a director, someone like that. Or you may have to go somewhere else.

Totally unacceptable. If you are paying via insurance and you are doing all of the dressings etc, are they charging the ins for that service?

That said, if you are coming in early, you cannot expect to be seen before your appointment time no matter how early you are, if there are patients waiting.

that is a real puzzle . for sure it should be equal service you do pay equal payment . It should not matter age . perhaps the older ones are not able to do the undressing that they do for them and not yourself.Perhaps they want you to do something for yourself and keep you as an active partner of your treatment .rudeness is not acceptable anywhere . we should show kindness to all . emoticon

I agree it is wrong. There must be a manager for the center to talk to. You are paying for a service and deserve the same service as anyone else, including your start time. Is there another center you can use? That may be a solution.

I understand what you are saying. There is NO REASON for rudeness, under any circumstances! Obviously you have a need for dialysis, and that means without discrimination. Having a brother on dialysis, I would be upset if he would be treated without dignity and respect.

Try discussing with your case manager at the center, who should keep your conversation in strict confidence, your treatment and possibly she can help clear up the matter.

I don't know what their reasons are (sounds like an unprofessional place, honestly), but it might stem from cultural values. As I understand it, the elderly are to be treated with more respect in Asian cultures.

I'm not sure but a head nurse losing her temper with a patient would not be acceptable around here and I know for sure threatening to delay treatment would be a BIG no-no. Is there a different center you could go to? DIBANNA has some good suggestions. I know things are different in other countries, but I find that kind of behavior unacceptable.
Strangely here in the United States, I think they give younger people priority over older people. Don't get me wrong, we treat our elderly for medical conditions, but if you need a transplant or some type of treatment which has a waiting list, age is a factor. Difference in cultures I guess.
Hope you feel better soon and sorry you're having a difficult time.

It would upset me too. But choose your battles.

1) You could go to the Head Nurse's boss but that can cause you other problems.
2) You could go somewhere else.
3) You could be happy that you CAN do the dressing yourself.
4) Sometimes (and I am not a nurse or in the health field) people would do better with appreciation instead of criticism. A card, a flower or a thank you sometimes will get you what you want much quicker.

I hope you solve your problem. I'm sorry you have to have dialysis at a young age. Good luck

I do not understand that either....maybe they want to do the elderly people first for some reason...

Not too happy today!

Monday, June 04, 2012

I just can't believe him! He's like in his 70s but he's acting like a child! He actually had the nerve to tell me that he knows what time I usually arrive and actually admitted to coming a few minutes earlier so he could bag my spot.

As a result, I started dialysis 30 minutes later today. One of the machines was out of order too, so I had no choice but to wait! And to add insult to the injury, my Dad was forced to wait for me because I had to wash my bloodlines!

I swear, I'm the only one in my shift to do that! What's one more bucket. The nurses are just being lazy and taking advantage of me!

So sorry. I hate people who do that and then tell you that they did it on purpose! I know it was frustrating, but I'm sure you're dad doesn't mind waiting on you. I hope it gets better...

Dear, one thing I have heard/read for YEARS and
myself struggle with, is this quote by William James

"The greatest discovery of my generation is that
human beings can alter their lives
by altering their attitudes of mind."

-William Shakespeare also said:
It is neither good nor bad, but thinking makes it so.

YES, he was a jerk - and bragged about it! -
But YOU control your reaction & emotions.
YOU are the BIGGER PERSON

It IS HARD, when we control our emotions,
we have POWER in life

Closing with a quote from Gary Zukav:
"By choosing your thoughts, and by selecting which emotional currents you will release and which you will reinforce, you determine the quality of your Light. You determine the effects that you will have upon others, and the nature of the experiences of your life."

Have a TERRIFIC TUESDAY

It is really hard to find compassion for people who act that way. And it is really hard to blow off such incredibly bad manners and not let it ruin your day. Sometimes when I have a day like that I just have to make a commitment to myself not let anyone stuck the joy from my day and I have to do something to take care of myself.
I hope the rest of your day goes well and you have fewer joy suckers in your life.
Take care of you! emoticon

Spent 2 hours cross-stitching

Sunday, June 03, 2012

I didn't get much done, I just did the outline of one dragonfly. I can't believe it took me almost 2 hours. Did you know that it was 35 degrees Celsius out there today!? Whew!! It was sooooo hot. I'm still aching from yesterday's Pilates workout. So I think I'll rest today. I want to give my muscles a chance to mend.

I promise I'll post a pic when I've finished my cross-stitch piece. Whenever that will be, cross-stitch is so time consuming!

This time my legs were shaking!

Saturday, June 02, 2012

I did some more Pilates today. About 28 minutes worth. I concentrated on abs and legs this time. Wow! It was a tough workout because I couldn't complete all the reps and my legs were shaking! I actually wanted to do more but I decided it was enough because I couldn't even walk properly after that.

I'll see if I can do some dancing tomorrow. I keep saying that but I guess I need more discipline. My friends wanted to go see MIB3 but I didn't really fancy it. I actually wanted to go see Snow White and the Hunts Man but I guess I could go see it later because it's the school holidays now in Malaysia, and I don't fancy being squeezed into the cinema with yappy teens.

I ended up seeing Underworld 1 with my Dad this evening. My Mom wanted to see something on TV at 8.30pm, we'll continue the Underworld DVD at 9.30pm, which is like 15 minutes from now.

And I hope I can wake up in time for church tomorrow morning! Sigh! Discipline! Discipline!

A bad day!

Friday, June 01, 2012

I just finished dialysis. I bleed twice through both needle holes. I lost a little bit of blood, I had to soak my clothes to get the blood stains out. Not only that, my Dad had to wait a full 10 minutes for me because the nurses refused to wash my dialyser, despite that fact that I was already late and I had lost some blood. I really question their professionality sometimes!

I mean, if I can't wash it on time, shouldn't they at least do it for me? Like I said, I had lost some blood and I was dizzy afterwards too! I'm feeling so miserable now!

Sorry to hear what you have to go through today. Did you know that Hydrogen Peroxide can remove blood stains from your clothes easily. Just drop it on the blood stains and it comes right off. I am sure you can get it from the pharmacy.

God bless you.
