So I broke last night and went to the doctor. I was miserable. I wasn't getting any better.
So, after being poked, prodded, say ahhhh, blah blah blah... its acid reflux. Seriously? seriously.
I have GERD. I have been taking omeprazole for years. I guess with the touch of the flu I had at the beginning of the week plus other things, I am having an enormous flare up. He said my throat was red and raw and that the pain in my ears is probably from where the reflux has made it up to my Eustachian tubes. WOW. I didn't realize that acid reflux could do all that.
I am now on a second GERD med for a while. I took it last night and started feeling relief within the hour.
I started doing research about ways I could change my diet to help with it as well as taking into account my food allergies. I really don't like the idea of the "alkaline" diet. It basically removes almost everything I eat on a regular basis... citrus, tomato products, etc.
I was surprised as well when the article I was reading said limit the amount of strawberries and blueberries you eat. Daggone. Looks like bananas (yuck) and apples for a while.... No lemonade!! :( :( :( MY FAVORITE. No french fries (ok, they are a vice... I know I shouldn't be eating them anyway). No ice cream, sour cream or cottage cheese. NO COFFEE. OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG! Who made these suggestions?? Satan?? I know, I know, I know. Daggone it. *sigh*
Couple these with my food allergies and it feels like I can have rice, veggies and water.
So, small steps as with anything else. I'm going to substitute grapefruit with banana. Egg whites instead of whole egg... although I really feel like I'm wasting food when I dump the yolks. Red licorice instead of chocolate when I want a treat.
I know moderation, like in all facets of life, will be key. Denying myself of a pleasure I am used to will only lead to more problems. Maybe this is the kick in the pants I needed.
