We're All Mad Here

Friday, April 22, 2011

On May 1st I’m going to start the Insanity workout, with the goal of losing another 20 lbs (putting me at my 50 lbs lost HALFWAY mark!) by July 4th (FREEDOM!). I’m going to look at the nutrition plan that comes with it this weekend to see if I’m going to do the workouts and follow their nutrition plan (probably…) or just do the workouts. X.x;;

I’d mentioned something about Tabata workouts and my bestest friend was like, “Pfft, that just looks like a poor man’s interval training. You want a real interval workout? I’ll give you a real interval workout!” And I said “BRING IT ON!”, because that’s how I roll. I know I’m not going to be able to do the workouts to full power and full speed, so I’m going to do the best *I* can do, and try to improve my own speed and power.

I was also thinking last night about what else I will change about my fitness schedule while I’m doing this Insanity workout. The time commitment appears to be about an hour a day to do these DVDs and get your butt handed to you. So I’ll do the Insanity workout daily, and I also want to keep going to Curves 3X a week. I also don’t want to give up any of my Zumba classes (Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights, and every-other Saturday), or my walks with Dad (every afternoon). I’d be OK with letting swimming go, at least until my parents get their pool up and running and I can swim out of doors (yay!). Oh! And I can’t skimp on the C25K, because I need to be ready for that Race for the Roses 5K in June. So basically I’m adding another hour of workin’ out on top of what I already do, haha.

I’m thinking I’ll probably go to bed earlier (9:00 instead of 9:30) so I can get up at 5:00 and do Insanity before work. That way I’ll be done by 6:00 every morning, and can still go to Curves on Mon/Wed/Fri before work. Or I suppose since I do Zumba in the Circuit on Monday and Wednesday nights, I don’t need to go to Curves in the a.m. those days, as the weights are part of the Zumba program. Though on Mondays I like to do just Zumba, so maybe I should still do Curves in the a.m.

So my new schedule (starting May 1st) will look something like this:
Mon: (total workout time: 1.5-2 hrs - Insanity rest day)
6:00 a.m. Curves
4:00 p.m. Walk w/ Dad
6:30 p.m. Zumba @ Curves (NSP)

Tues: (total workout time: 2-2.5 hrs)
5:00 a.m. Insanity workout
4:00 p.m. Walk w/ Dad
7:00 p.m. C25K

Wed: (total workout time: 2-2.5 hrs)
5:00 a.m. Insanity workout
4:00 p.m. Walk w/ Dad
6:30 p.m. Zumba @ Curves (SV)

Thurs: (total workout time: 2-2.5 hrs)
5:00 a.m. Insanity workout
4:00 p.m. Walk w/ Dad
6:00 p.m. Zumba @ Curves (NSP)

Fri: (total workout time: 2-2.5 hrs)
5:00 a.m. Insanity workout
4:00 p.m. Walk w/ Dad
7:00 p.m. C25K

Sat: (total workout time: 3-3.5 hrs)
5:00 a.m. Insanity workout
8:00 a.m. Curves
10:00 a.m. Walk w/ Dad
11:15 a.m. Zumba @ Curves (SV – ev/other week)

Sun: (total workout time: 3-3.5 hrs)
5:00 a.m. Insanity workout
9:00 a.m. Walk w/ Dad
2:00 p.m. Tennis
7:00 p.m. C25K

That’s assuming the Insanity workout is really every day and doesn’t have a rest day or anything. Since it’s only a 60 day program, my schedule will drop down an hour a day after July 1st. It’s going to be really hard work, but I’m looking forward to it! =) I’ve got a friend who’s doing the Insanity workout and seeing good results, and some friends of friends have said good things about it too. Besides, it’s like the Cheshire Cat says – We’re all mad here. =P

Keep sparking!!

wow girl, let me just say - you're crazy ;) It does have a rest day, i believe it has one lighter cardio day + a rest day actually. i was thinking of starting it as a 'reward' to myself if/when i complete the 5k, with the ultimate goal of using insanity to get me ready for the warrior dash at the end of july. Wasn't planning on doing both at the same time tho!

More power to ya!

It seems counter-intuitive...

Thursday, April 21, 2011

Yesterday I went to Curves and lifted weight in the a.m. (30 min), did Walk Away the Pounds 3 Mile w/ Dad (45 min), did C25K to Curves (30 min), Zumba at Curves (30 min), and walked home (30 min) for a total of 2 hrs and 45 min of exercise. WHEW! I looked at my trackers and I’d burned almost 1400 calories, and had only eaten about 1300, so I had a second supper last night and had 3 oz of ham, 1 c of veggie salsa (basically, bell peppers, tomatoes, and black beans), and 1 serving of whole grain Tostitos. It put me up to 1700 calories (300 calories over for the day), but I think that’s pretty securely offset with the extra 800 calories over my goals I got, haha. WHEW!

In answer to SMILEYKRIS’s question about how I’m doing with C25K – I’m pluggin’ along. Did W2D2 yesterday on my way to Curves for Zumba, but I couldn’t run for the entire 90 seconds all 6 times. I ended up walking for the last 10 seconds or so most times, walked the whole time on the 5th run, and only ran about 30 seconds on the last run. Blah. That is probably because I’d just done 45 minutes of aerobics less than an hour before I set out, and I was on my way to do Zumba so I didn’t want to push myself TOO hard. I’m hoping to get out tonight and do W2D2-take2, haha. But at least I got out there and did it 80% completion, which is better than not getting out there and doing it 0%, right? Right.

I was a little disappointed to hop on the scale last night (yes, I gave in…) and be at 198 (up 2 lbs from Sunday morning’s weigh in.) I know that I usually weigh more at night, but c’mon. COME ONNNNN!

I’m going to adjust my calorie intake upwards to reflect the changes in my exercise. If I keep consistently getting 90 minutes+ of exercise a day, I really can’t be eating only 1200-1400 calories. I plugged 90 minutes into my expected daily exercise in my fitness tracker, and it auto-adjusted my calories consumed up to 1750-2150 daily. I manually adjusted that down to 1700-1900 calories daily, and that’s where I’ll stay for the next couple of days, I think. Maybe the next couple of weeks. It’s SPRING, and I’m so excited to get outside and get active that I know I’m going to keep up this 90+ minutes of exercise daily trend. I need to make nutrition choices that are going to support this extreme amount of exercise so I can continue to push myself and get stronger and faster. =) So even though it seems counter-intuitive to eat MORE to lose weight, that’s what I’m going to do. …At least, I’m going to try. XP

How are you doing with your Spark journey? Are you excited for spring?

I noticed the auto-adjust of calories also when I logged more exercise. I was stuck in a plateau for about 3 weeks and finally broke through it after eating about 200-300 extra calories each day. I agree, seems very counter-intuitive, but hey, if I get to eat more AND lose weight I'll do it!

I've also been having the same experience with C25K. I've been giving myself 2 weeks for each week (so I do each week about 5 times) and am now on week 2. Yesterday I did my 4th run at week 2 and was finally able to run the whole 90 seconds all six times. I'll do it a few more times being moving on to week 3. 3 minutes of running still seems a little out of reach for me.
Good luck! emoticon

Exercising isn't just for the weight loss, it helps our bodies function better and not clog up. We sleep better, think better, look better and will have less aches and pains than if we sit around all day. So, eat well and wisely and keep moving!

Big plans, not-so-great follow-through. =P

Wednesday, April 20, 2011

That’s me – full of big plans, not so full of the will to follow through with them. Out of everything I said I was going to do for exercise yesterday, I did… none of it, haha.

I DID, however, walk the half mile up the road to the park with a friend and play tennis for 40 minutes. =) That was LOTS of fun, and with the walk up and back I DID get in an hour of exercise yesterday (which is my minimum goal). I had a lot of fun playing tennis, and it was nice to see my friend again. =) She’s been struggling with her weight loss and not seeing the results she wants as well. Actually, she’s not seeing any results at all, and we talked a little bit about the need for exercise AND diet to be healthful.

Last night I really, really, REALLY wanted some greasy, cheesy pizza. My dinner plan was to make crispy baked tilapia, but then I didn’t have eggs for the egg-white. I figured I’d try using a little spray butter instead, but then I didn’t have Special K for the crispy either. Now at this point I COULD HAVE said, “Oh well, don’t have what I need to make my healthy dinner, guess I’ll go get that pizza after all!” but I didn’t. I pulled out my trusty broiled parmesan tilapia recipe and made that instead (and it was really, really good.)

As a reward for sticking to what I SAID I was going to do, I’m having pizza for dinner tonight. =) I’m going to stop at Papa Murphy’s after work and pick of a cheese DeLite pizza and a sausage DeLite (for Daddy) and have pizza with my Dad after we walk this afternoon. =) I’ve planned 4 (count ‘em FOUR) delicious, cheesy slices into my nutrition plan for the day, so I get delicious, guilt free pizza for dinner tonight. =) And guilt-free pizza tastes about 100x better than guilty, scarf-it-down-before-my-self-conscience-ki
cks-in pizza.

Thanks to the input from everyone yesterday. I AM going to keep kicking up my exercise a notch for the rest of this week, but mostly because I feel that I CAN do more. A lot of what I do is pretty low-impact and doesn’t get my heart-rate up to where it should be (like all this walking), so I feel like if I’m not going to go harder, I need to go longer. My body has gotten used to a lot of this less strenuous stuff, so I’m not seeing the results I want all the time. As the numerous SparkPeople articles I’ve read have said, you either have to increase intensity or duration to kick it up a notch. Since a lot of my exercise I do with others, I really feel more comfortable adding more, rather than upping the intensity of what I do now.

On the plus side, Zumba on Monday was a total cake walk. The half hour class ended and I was like, “What, it’s over? But I’m just now starting to break a sweat! Let’s keep going!” My BFF says it’s because I’ve been doing so much, what used to be hard is so much easier for me now. The machines at my Curves are also set at a much higher tension than the machines at hers, so those feel super-easy now too.

Thanks to everyone who pointed out to me that weight fluctuates, and weight loss is not a steady thing, and to be careful with my calories in vs. calories out ratio. I am keeping all that in mind while I decided what to do with my nutrition and fitness goals, and I’m going to go back up to my 1800-2000 calories/day week starting Sunday (I’m on 1200-1400 now). I’m also being sure to have some extra fruit or nuts after workouts to replenish, even if it puts me a little over my calories for the day. I know it’s important to keep my body HEALTHY while I try to lose weight, and doing lots of exercise on a very low cal diet for a VERY SHORT TIME (like, less than week, kids) I think won’t hurt me in the long run.

There’s snow on the ground, so my exercise will be mostly indoors today. I’m going to try to do C25K on my way home from Zumba tonight if the snow has melted off the paths – we’ll see! Keep sparking!!

EDIT: Oh! I almost forgot! I got two new pieces of exercise equipment to help me get fit while stuck working in my cubicle! Thanks to SMOOISHNESS for the inspiration!

Ha this made me lol :) You are great!

Glad your are noting the suddenly-easy fitness class and increased tension at the gym- those are total marks of progress! Sometimes I think that stuff is more satisfying than a number on a scale because water weight/ clothes/ whatever can skew that. Can't argue with increased tension!! Keep rockin!

Also- how's your c25k going? What day are you on? I just posted about w2d2... getting a little nervous about my week long vacation home next week in michigan- forecast is rain and thunder every day! hope I can muster the determination to finish week 3 while I'm there!

Not where I want to be

Tuesday, April 19, 2011

I’m a little disappointed (OK, make that very disappointed) that I’m not where I wanted to be on my weight loss plan. According to plan, this past weigh in should have put me at 193, but instead I’m sitting at 196. This Sunday I’m “supposed to” be 191, but I just don’t think I’m going to see a 5 lb loss this week.

I sure am going to try like the dickens, though! I got in over 2 hours of exercise yesterday, and I’m going to shoot for the same today. I’m also drinking a Curves chocolate protein shake for breakfast (with fruit) and for lunch (with fruit and a half sandwich today, fruit and a salad tomorrow, I think). I think I will REALLY try to push it this week and if I get down to 191 by this Sunday, I will reward myself with my FAVORITE Easter food, wilty lettuce salad, on Sunday. For those of you not in the know, wilty lettuce salad is a salad with iceberg lettuce, topped with eggs and bacon, with a hot bacon grease poured over right before serving and a little bit of mashed potatoes in to thicken it up a bit. It sounds kinda nasty, but it is SO GOOD.

I’ve measured out what 3 oz of ham looks like, so I’m prepared for Sunday on that front. Easter dinner might be a tad lackluster, because I can’t eat a lot of my family’s regular Easter foods. I’m going to try to focus on the veggies before dinner, and on the veggie-centric dishes during dinner. I’ll also have 3 oz of ham, half a slice of bread, and a SMALL amount of wilty lettuce salad (if I get down to 191 by this Sunday).

I CAN DO THIS. I did Curves, C25K Wk2Day1, 2 mile walk w/ Dad, and Zumba last night. Today I’ll do another 2 mile walk w/ Dad, C25K Wk2Day2, swim with PeanutSJ, and perhaps I’ll try out a Zumba DVD. YES!! I will push myself very hard this week, and Sunday will be my rest day, as a reward for working out 1-2 hours every day this week. And instead of having my “freebie Friday” dinner reward for sticking to my nutrition goals all week, I’ll hold off on that until Sunday, so I can use that “freebie” for Easter dinner and eat some things I might not otherwise. After all, it IS a holiday! =)

Plan for the rest of the week:

Wed: Curves, walk 2 miles w/ Dad, Zumba, bellydance DVD
Thurs: C25K Wk2Day3, walk 2 miles w/ Dad, Zumba, ride bike (if there’s not SNOW)
Fri: Curves, walk 2 miles w/ Dad, C25k Wk2Day3 (repeat to prepare for Week 3), ride bike (again, if no snow)
Sat: Curves, walk w/ Dad, attempt to ride bike to/from work, tennis
Sun: EASTER! Weigh in. C25K Wk3Day1

I’m feeling pretty jazzed!! I’m ready to WORK, WORK, WORK this week, so let’s GO, GO, GO!!

Be careful with doing more exercise. That will stop the progress if you aren't eating enough. That's what happened to me in March. I say keep doing what you were doing originally. You're weight loss is amazing! 30 lbs down since you started! That is really great and if you continue on like you were originally..you are going to continue to see the results you want. Don't fix what isn't broken. You found the science you needed for meals and exercise...stay with that for a little while longer. emoticon

I agree with ISMEME- weight loss is not a linear thing. We can give it our all and strange things can happen. I'm not trying to discourage you. I think you should follow whatever you think is a reasonable plan, but be realistic about what may happen in terms of weight loss. If the weight doesn't come off, this week, don't be afraid to reward yourself for your efforts! The weight will come off. You are a champion!

You can do it, girl! You are already kicking so much butt! Don't forget where you came from and how much you've lost already. If you can't lose the 5lbs by Easter, don't get discouraged. ISMEME is totally right about how weight fluctuates per week. Sometimes I plateau and then I'll lose 3lbs! I think you're doing great and should be proud of your successes. Keep at it, chica!

It sounds like you have a good plan, but also remember weight loss fluctuates -- especially for women. Don't beat yourself up! Stick to your plan, exercise, etc. I think that you should reward yourself with a little of the wilty lettuce salad no matter what -- just for being so dedicated!

You can do it, but remember that the weight will eventually come off and it is about a healthy journey. 30 lbs down, trying to muster some excitement

Sunday, April 17, 2011

Weekly weigh in: 196
That puts me at a total of 31 lbs lost, woooooo. For some reason, I'm just not that excited. Perhaps it's because it was just last week that I was ECSTATIC about making it to "One-derland." Perhaps it's because I've been thrilled about 10 lbs, then about 20, and now that 10 lb increment just doesn't seem so special. Or maybe it's because this time it took me twice as long to lose that 10 lb increment (reached 10 lbs goal around 1/20, 20 lbs around 2/20, and 30 lbs around 4/20.) Whichever the case, I'm very glad to have lost another 2 lbs this week, and I'm glad to have crossed this 30 lbs mark, but I'm ready to keep pushing for 50.

Something I AM incredibly excited over is my new greenhouse!! We got our tax rebate back and my husband and I split the money so we each have half. I'm sure he will do the responsible thing and put his in savings or pay some bills with it, but that's just not my style. That's what I work my butt off every day at work to do - pay bills. This is my playtime money!

Yesterday I bought a 6' x 10' greenhouse from Mills Fleet Farm. Here's a link to the 6' x 8' version so you can get an idea of what it's like:
www.fleetfarm.com/catalog/product_de
tail/lawn-garden/lawn-garden-tools/she
lterlogic-organic-growers-greenhouse

It was actually quite cheap compared to some of the others I was looking at ($230, instead of $450-$650!). I'm going to go back to Fleet Farm next week and buy some shelving to put in it, and I'm also going to be on the look out at garage sales for pots and things. I'm so excited to start my container vegetable garden this spring!! I ordered two books on container gardening off of Amazon, and I think I'll hold off on actually buying pots and things until those come. They should give me a better idea of what sorts of needs I have to grow certain types of vegetables, and what sorts of veggies grow well in containers.

I hope to grow tomatoes, onions, summer squash, zucchini, spinach, romaine lettuce, bell peppers, peas, green beans, acorn squash, asparagus, radishes, and possibly something new to me like eggplant. Oh! And strawberries and blueberries, and possibly a raspberry cane if I have room.

I know I probably won't have room in my 6' x 10' tent-like greenhouse for ALL of those things, but I hope with some creative placement (like shelving units, hanging planters, and training things with vines to grow upward) I can fit many of them. And I only need a few plants of most of these, and just one of others. One or two tomato plants should get me through the summer just fine - as opposed to the dozen or so tomato plants we had in my mom's garden last year, and most of the tomatoes ended up going uneaten! I don't need a whole row of green beans or peas - again, one or two vines of each should do for me. Likewise zucchini and summer squash - those plants are so prolific that one of each will produce plenty. I've never tried growing spinach, romaine lettuce, onions, or asparagus before, but I'll learn about them and see what my needs will be. =)

And I fully intend on growing my tomatoes in an upside down planter (or 2), which will conserve space and eliminate the need for tomato cages. I'm looking into other plants that are able to grow this way.

In other, non-gardening news... I finished Week 1 of Couch to 5K yesterday. Woo! Today started Week 2, Day 1. =) The podcast I'm using to time my runs is NHS Couch to 5K. It's got great music, and the nice lady that tells you when you walk and when to run gives you a little warning when it's almost time to run, and she also lets you know "This is your 3rd run," or "This is your second to last run - you're almost there!" You can download this podcast for free by searching the iTunes store for "NHS Couch to 5k", or you can download them at their website:
www.nhs.uk/LiveWell/c25k/Pages/couch
-to-5k.aspx

Or if you search "Couch to 5K" in the iTunes store, you can find lots of free podcast to download running music for each week of the program. Searching "C25K" yields only 2 results - one techno and one Christian music. I've listening to snippets off all the ones I found (searching both "C25K" and "Couch to 5k") and NHS's is the best by far, in my opinion. The music is upbeat and great to run to, and the cues for when to walk and when to run are clear.

Happy Sparking!!

Nice Job! I really want to do the same thing - the greenhouse - I don't think this year it will fit. We already have our income tax going to savings & paying credit cards. Since Chris was unemployed most of last year we don't get all those taxes back. I'm actually getting back half of what I received the previous year when i was single. now that we are married, I have to be more responsible with the money.

I know after losing 40 lbs since January, I'm not as excited either. I'm kinda in a blah state trying to respark myself, so that 5% challenge will be exactly what I need.
