what I learned on my very first ever hospital stay ;)

Friday, March 11, 2011

- you do not need a robe at all
- boxer shorts are the way to go
- crossword puzzles are boring there just as they are at home
- you need snacks of your own
- people like sharing room with "not very sick" people better! (I was a hit emoticon)
- you do not need your own soap
- you need tons of wet wipes!!!!!!
- a lap top would have been nice!
- shame is a great motivator to learn new things - I learned to use the "goose" - a bed pan, by myself in no time!
- listen to the stories others are telling, there are things they know and you do not!
- possible freak out moment - if you wonder what yucky dough like thing they forgot on the operating table - not to worry! it's just your butt and it's numb from anesthesia
- don't mess with nurses
- if you've lost a lot of weight - you will be sort of like a circus attraction - be prepared
- you will not poop on yourself during the surgery, don't worry
- you will feel pain where you did not expect it - be ready for surprises, really ready
- tell everybody you know you're going to the hospital. it's nice to be thought of during those long hours
- time moves slower in hospitals, is no lie!

Next time I will:
- bring my own food
- bring books
- ask if there's a wireless internet there
- tell everyone I'm at the hospital!
- make sure the cell has loads of minutes in it

Ela was so happy to see me, but so sad now that she still gets to have short walks with dad ... Poor baby!

My leg surgery went well. I learned a lot about staying in the hospital! LOL More about it when I rested a while.
But I see I have a new beautiful surprise - I became a SP motivator! WOOHOO!!! That made my day!
I am to rest now for a week, then slowly start walking. But I have little time, for my next surgery is on monday, 21st of march! That's the big one! I get my breats lifted and reduced...I am scared and happy at the same time!
Thanks to all for everything! I can't wait to see what you all have been up to :))))
One more thing - I am not going to be able to work out for quite some time now! I will have to adjust a lot to that! So glad I used u all the tim before the surgeries to run as much as I could and did more ST. Now I can't, for at leat a month. Not even power walking is allowed! That was a big downer. But I hope I am fit enough to not lose too much in the time out time... It's for such a good cause! When this all is over, I will be so very happy!!!!!!!!

I am thrilled for you. You will have to me all about it (maybe through sparkmail) so I know what I will be facing. I go April 5th for my assessment. There is a tiny 1% possibility that my insurance may help pay for my tummy surgery. How nice would that be? I am not counting on it but it would be great if that happened.
Congrats on your new job!!! Everything you wanted is now happening for you and you deserve every bit of happiness that comes your way.

Offline for a few days

Saturday, March 05, 2011

Because it's supposed to be very windy tomorrow and monday, I'll probably be leaving for the mainland tomorrow morning. Hopefully. I do not want to risk missing the dr's appointment.
Monday I'm to see the plastic surgeon and hopefully find out if I can have the breast reduction for free. If they decide I have medical grounds for it.
Tuesday I report to the hospital for my leg surgery. (Very scared!)

I will not be sparking for about a week. I think.. No tracking food, no working out...

But after all this, I am going to be better. Hopefully they'll fix my leg so it doesn't swell any more. Would be nice to be able to wear shorts in summer. Or a skirt in winter, if one so wishes...

I bought some new underwear today. I have been wearing the huge old ones and that just is not right! Also got a pair of really tight jeans. (I know, I know...jeans again...) The ones I got from a friend are a bit oldish, and the one pair I have gotten a few months ago are now a bit baggy on me. I went to the all mighty Chinese shop because I can't afford to shop anywhere else.

The other day I got a really cheep jacket, a bit on a dressy side, and I simply love it! I was having a woohoo moment when I saw what size it was! I think it is the size I wore in high school! OK, it has elastic in it and it's tight, but it looks good! WOW! And today at the shop, I asked for a smaller size jeans! A smaller size!
I just can't get used to this! It gives me so much joy, all of you who have been there know the feeling, and those of you who are yet to get there, just you wait! It's the best!
We, who used to walk in the store in shame and despair, now get to ask for a smaller size! Of an already tiny jeans!

I will post a picture, but I'm already getting on dad's nerves with all the picture taking, so soon! LOL

can someone explain to me again...avocado is healthy? why?

Friday, March 04, 2011

I have never had one. The other day I got 4 fruits because they were on sale and I keep reading how healthy they are so...
I pureed one in the plate, added lemon juice, olive oil, salt and pepper. I do not enjoy the taste at all. I put in between two slices of bread and am forcing it down. Hate to waste food.
But, can someone tell me, what's so good about it? It's full of fat, carbs, low protein. Not to mention the taste!
I am stir frying the rest little by little. Hope they keep until I come home next week.
Also, some proved recipes would be nice.
And can you freeze them? (a whole fruit does seem to be too much for one person with all the fat...)
Thank you! Back to lunch! emoticonLOL

UPDATE
I can't finnish it! I am washing it down with a cookie! YUCKY GUACAMOLE!

I just ran across your blog. I made myself try them about a month ago because they are full of healthy fat. I ate a half each day for about 5 days and was itching all over. Turns out I'm very allergic to them. Oh darn! I never have liked guacamole!

NELLIEC 3/6/2011 11:11AM

When I was young, I didn't like avocados. Now that I am older and have given them a chance again, I have discovered I like them. They are an acquired taste. But moderation. I usually have guacamole with a few chips. Sometimes I have a few slices with lemon juice.

Report Inappropriate Comment
WARMSPRINGDAY 3/6/2011 10:18AM

The fat that they contain is very healthy fat, but a little goes a long way and they need to be used in moderation. I like them, but for myself, they are not in my grocery budget. Cube them on a salad, or slice thin into a sandwich. Skip the guacamole!

MOV4WARD 3/4/2011 7:14PM

emoticonmostly I use them like a garnish... meaning add a little to the rest of what you are eating, like you would add a spoonful of sour cream and a spoonful of salsa and a spoonful of the avocado to your plate of Spanish food.

I love adding a little bit to salads or thin slices on a turkey sandwhich with tomatos.

A little bit adds flavor but doesn't overwhelm like eating it plain.

also, i've never tried cooking. i add as a topping after the hot food finishes cooking :)

hope this helps!

(also eat when they are ripe. Soft but not turning brown. After you cut them open put a piece of plastic wrap around what you won't eat so it stays green.)

ps ~ they are a healthier source of "fats" like olives compared to red meat, so good source of fat for people trying to follow a vegetarian diet. Because they are so much fat, I usually only eat 1/4 of 1 small avocado at a time. 1 lasts me 4 days or meals

You will either love or loathe them. I love them. Never cook them. I eat them raw, once they are a little sofltened I either cut into chunks and add to salad with a vinaigrette dressing, or halve, remove the stone, fill the stone hole with salad cream or thousand Island Dressing, and just munch it down. :-) They are nommy with prawns too. :-)

I've never tried to freeze them, so can't help there, sorry Honey.

They are great for you, but if you don't like it - don't eat it. Instead of trying to eat it like a guacamole sandwich - ewe and I love guacamole - slice some thin and add to a grilled vegi/chicken sandwich or make small chunks and add to your salad - spread it out - only eat a few slices at a time not the whole thing. Keep it from turning brown by spritzing with fresh lemon/lime juice and store in an airtight container with the stone that you remove from it. If you want to mash it - add some fresh grated garlic in with a bit of fresh lime juice - not the juice that comes in a plastic lime look-a-like thing
Again though - if you try other ways of eating it and still don't like - just chalk it up to something you did try and no need to go back to it. LOL
Good luck.

Avecados have a unique texture. I happen to love them. My guacamole includes a Tblspoon of salsa and sour cream. I do not cook them. I cut them up and put them on salad. Love them with ranch dressing. You can also fill the hole with tuna salad. Yum. Be sure that they are soft, when they are hard, they are gross.

First off, if you don't like them, don't eat them. One of the things that I have learned about healthy living lately is that you have to like what you do or you will revert to the old (bad) ways.

Avocados are great because they are filled with healthy fats and fiber. In fact, most of the carb is fiber, so they are actually a good low-carb food. The fat is good because it helps satisfy. I use them as a way to fight cravings or binging. If I really, really want to eat a box of Ding Dongs, I just eat an avocado and the feeling is gone. This is pretty rare, but handy when needed. Avocados are very calorie dense, but it is a good kind of calorie. Us low-carbers are more concerned in avoiding sugar and simple carbs like rice or corn, and so an avocado is a great healthy alternative when you really need to eat something filling.

    Lol...I hear ya!
My mother makes guacamole with them. I believe it is the healthy fat that they contain. I don't care to eat them either.
I am on quest to find heather food that I like, too. Soon, we will start on the garden...can hardly wait for fresh veggies with taste. :)
