Graduation was delightful!

Saturday, June 04, 2011

Some of my best friends have now moved across the country and who knows when I will next see them. Fortunately they missed all the stormy weather that could have played havoc with their travels.

Here are some of my friends celebrating some very fine academic achievements. With one visiting family from Nepal, we were able to enjoy several of our regional parks . . . and naturally, I donít go much of anywhere without a camera.

So enough with the family album. 8-)) The following is a preview of our trip to Gooseberry Falls, a Minnesota State Park:

With all your resources, I hope you make great use of your goals to attain life-long learning.

Spring is in the air!

Friday, June 03, 2011

I am just getting my pictures sorted out, so I'll share with you some photos from a walk two weeks ago (May 21) where I enjoyed the signs of Spring in the air, while walking the Osaugie Trail along a wooded area by Lake Superior.

The catkin of the pussy willow is always a delight to see.

Another catkin shape takes form with a delicate lacy, lemony-lime look.

A little bit of green is coming to life around an old shack.

I believe these birds are buntings that nest in a cluster of relatively new bird houses along the path.

Then there's the light green developing along a small creek bed.

As you can see, I enjoy beauty in some of the simplest of God's creation. May you find beauty and joy in your day.

Today we saw a tiny Cotton Tail Rabbit right next to the Walking Path.

Preparing for climate changes . . . will miss the owls!

Tuesday, May 17, 2011

Iím glad to have had met all seven nutrients yesterday by falling within the recommended ranges for calories, proteins, fat, carbs, fiber, calcium, and sodium with a full 120 miles towards our challenge to NYC. I just donít understand why so many Teddy Bears are missing in action.

While those Spirited Underdogs are truly spirited, we seem to be successfully making headway. The Spirited Underdogs seem to have a fire in their belly and are not willing to place anywhere but first place this week. Letís see if we give them a run for their money.

One of the advantages of being south of the frost line, we have lots of fruit trees in the area. Itís all I can do to keep my mitts off this beautiful mango tree.

While we have a lot of plant life in our back yard (for privacy), my partner and I are thinking about a privacy hedge along the fence line -- that can barely be seen now -- and may opt to go with the coco plum, if it can manage well during our low water months.

This is likely my last walk by this beautiful family of owls . . . today only four babies were clustered together. It's amazing the radius they have on head turns. I just canít resist those little burrowing furry babies . . . theyíre so adorable.

How nice not to be in the frost zone. I, also, love mangoes... Great for keeping in your nutrient ranges. You are doing so well!

I love your pictures. You are lucky not to be in a frost zone. Believe it or not, we actually had frost the night before last and now it is in the high 70's. That is Wisconsin for you.

I can relate to the not walking outside in the rain... that is all we have seen for weeks here.. today was the first sunshiny day that I actually got out for a walk.

For those of you that are wondering about the missing bears... I am one of them only because I have been told to cut back on what I was doing and it has been most frustrating for me.

Today I did get in a 30 min. walk and went out and got a ball so can do more on the ball inside. I am used to doing walking tapes when it is raining and more strength training.

Because of the shape of my one knee I can't do the walking tapes and I have just been lazy with the strength training... but I know I need to keep moving to get some relief from the pain I have been in.

When you are told you can't do what is familiar to you it is hard to come up with another way to exercise.

Well take care.. enjoyed your blog... always enjoy your pictures

You live in the midst of so much natural beauty!

Well, I'm one of the missing Teddy Bears.
emoticon emoticon

Last week was so beautiful, and I got out almost every day for at least an hour-long walk. Since Saturday, rain, rain and more rain. I haven't done any other form of exercise either, so I haven't had anything to post. I did measure my portions a couple days, and posted that, but I didn't even do that yesterday. (My scale reflected my truant behavior!)

This is inexcusable Teddy Bear behavior! I've been measuring my portions, and plan to get at least 20 minutes of exercise in today. My biggest challenge has always been getting my exercise in when I can't walk outside!

Goals update and adorable borrowing owl family

Monday, May 16, 2011

Getting fitness done early, seems to free up the rest of my day nicely, especially when it comes to those Tuesdays or Wednesdays when weíre thinking about landing at our exciting new city. I should do this more often.

While my nest of seven borrowing owls have built a new underground home, I found a new family of 8 while walking towards my cup of coffee this morning.

By seeing the cluster of five here, you'll see the added three that are further away from the nest below:

Iím glad to report that my goals for last week were right on target:
emoticon 1) Shed at least one-half pound at every weekly weigh-in
emoticon 2) Exceed 30 minutes in daily cardio and strength training
emoticon 3) Track food and fitness daily in SparkPeople (SP) while weekly networking with my fellow Weight Watchers
emoticon 4) Average six or more servings of fruits and veggies daily
emoticon 5) Drink an average of at least 10 cups of water daily
emoticon 6) Sleep 7-9 hours a night five days a week.
emoticon 7) Satisfy meeting all seven SP recommended levels of: calories, emoticon fat, carbohydrates, protein, fiber, calcium, and sodium twice weekly. Meet four or more of these goals six times a week.
emoticon 8) Spend at least 15 minutes daily in the study of Godís word.
emoticon 9) Treat myself to something fun at least three times a week (connect with a friend with dinner out (stay in calorie range), hike in nature, movie, theatre, etc). This goal will be best documented through photography and blogs.
emoticon 10) Complete the knitting of skein of yarn in a prayer shawl.

Goals for this week:

Fitness Change: I decided that my goals for fitness during a fitness-based challenge have not been realistic, as the Teddy Bears encourage me to exceed my fitness minimums. My SparkAngel (Ceri) is even able to push me to the 120 minutes level most every day. While I do not have a healthy relationship with fitness, I love a good challenge!

Personal Rewards: Iíve also decided while I want to keep doing something special for myself three times weekly, the purposes of this goal is not mere selfishness, but to make sure I find the joy, prayer, and thanksgiving in each and every day in honor to an active and living faith where the Apostle Paul tells us to, ďRejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is Godís will for you in Christ Jesus.Ē (1 Thes 5:16-18)

1) Shed at least one-half pound at every weekly weigh-in
2) Exceed 60 minutes in daily cardio and strength training
3) Track food and fitness daily in SparkPeople (SP) while weekly networking with my fellow Weight Watchers (permission to miss WW meeting if traveling)
4) Average six or more servings of fruits and veggies daily
5) Drink an average of at least 10 cups of water daily
6) Sleep 7-9 hours a night five days a week.
7) Satisfy meeting six of the seven SP recommended levels of: calories, fat, carbohydrates, protein, fiber, calcium, and sodium four times weekly. Fall within calorie range on six days.
8) Spend at least 15 minutes daily in the study of Godís word.
9) Find prayer, joy, and thanksgiving in each and every day. Treat myself to something fun at least three times a week (connect with a friend with dinner out (stay in calorie range), hike in nature, movie, theatre, etc). This goal will be best documented through photography and blogs.
10) Complete the knitting of skein of yarn in a prayer shawl (Will be half done at end of Week 2).
11) Exceed in the 5% Living the Good Life Challenge: Weight/measure every meal.

Robert asked me yesterday if I had a digital scale. Yes, my two digital scales will weigh over six pounds and I love them. Unfortunately, when I bought a new one that also calculate the Weight Watcher PointsPlus, I inadvertently left my two-year old gem of a scale up north, so Iím stuck with an older one-pound scale at here. It works just fine -- just can't put too heavy a container on it as 16 oz disappears quickly with pottery dishes.

Are you superstitious? If I were, then I would be assured that I would come into money with all the bubbles that came to my cup of coffee this morning. Fun!

Moneyís coming my way! WooHoo . . . okay, so Iím not superstitious, but I can still smile at the thought. Kitchen omens and superstitions say that: ďMoney will soon come your way if any of the following things should occur: bubbles appear in a cup of coffee, you accidentally knock over a sugar bowl, rice forms a ring around the edge of a pot, or tea leaves float to the top of the cup.Ē Source: http://www.scribd.com/doc/2372273/Kitchen-
Omens-and-Superstitions

The fleece and Gortex (rain coat fabric) being cut at my table will allow me to make a couple dozen pet hammocks for a friend.

Hope youíre having a terrific day.
