Common Sense...

...ok WOW. I'm taking a calculus class, right, and I got there late today, and the class was going over the homework that was due over the weekend (...online, so yeah, they can do that...). So they're working a problem, and I got all of them right (...it's in the book, and the notes... not hard stuff -yet...-) So, I'm looking over the notes for today, and they're working on a problem and the instructor doesn't even know what he's doing. So finally, I say whatever the problem is supposed to be... and he doesn't understand what I'm saying...which I understand, so he asks me to come up to the board and just write it down. Ok...so I go up and write the part I was talking about. Well, there was one part that, for about 20 minutes everyone thought was wrong. I mean seriously...they worked through the problem (which did work out the way they did it...but that's only because the factors being used in the problem were 5 and 5... which probably doesn't make much sense to anyone...but that's ok...) Anyway...at the very end of it, someone says "but that's supposed to be negative" ...which is the way I had it written to begin with... But, the instructor didn't even know how to work the problem. AND... it was an odd problem... and in the teacher's version of the book all the answers to the odd questions are in the back of the book.

I'm not trying to "put anyone down" ...I mean, the question was a bit confusing when I did it, it took me about 15 minutes to finally realize what was going on.... I'm just venting.

So... I felt really good about that class after worrying I'd be the stupid one in there.

...and more on common sense...so, I was looking through some recipes on the spark site, and I was reading some of the reviews... it's surprising how many people rate the recipe as one star, or "bad" and say "Sounds good, I'm going to try it!!!" ...how can it be bad if you haven't tried it?

My FAVORITE one today was on a macaroni and CHEESE recipe.

ok... Macaroni and CHEESE... what does common sense tell you? ...it has pasta...you can probably put in whatever pasta you like, right? ...and Cheese. A dairy product, like ice cream. Or milk...or yogurt... I mean, if it was titled " Macaroni and 'Cheese' " ...with cheese in quotes or something, indicating that it were made with fake cheese...this would make sense... but... someone rated it "Bad" because... it's "Not good for lactose intolerant people"

Now, I understand that some lactose intolerant people may like macaroni and cheese too. But I don't really think it's fair to rate something as "bad" just because it has a dairy product in it.

And again, I'm really not trying to put anyone down. I just thought it was amusing.

    Yeah, that's really stupid. Maybe I should go label every single seafood recipe "bad" because I'm allergic to seafood.

Do you need a challenge!?! I do!!



For the month of January my goals are (set low, but that's ok...getting into a new routine...):

625 minutes of cardio

400 minutes strength training

I challenge YOU to do more than me!

Let me know what your goals are, and keep me motivated, and I'll try and do the same for you! :oD ...now, I'm at 196 right now, so someone who's been working out everyday for the last year and only has 5 pounds to go will have an advantage...but, that's ok, I'm up for the challenge!

ok... well, today is the day. I mean, seriously, how many more days can I say "tomorrow will be different" ...I mean, come on... how many people tell themselves ..."well, I didn't make it today, so tomorrow, definitely tomorrow. Well, it's ok that I didn't do it today, it's Friday, so it'll be better to start on Monday anyway, right?!" And then, 1 year later gained 20 pounds?!

Well, Nope, not anymore... today I will work out. I'm tired. I don't want to. Both of my kids have been sick all week, when I think one is about to get over it, the other one starts vomiting. I thought they were both pretty much done yesterday before bed... but at 1:20 this morning, I found out I was wrong! So, long nights for the last two weeks (my husband and I were sick the week before)...and I really want a nap! ...but instead I'm going to clean up the living room, then hop on my stationary bike that I bought and used EVERY DAY!! --for like a week. ...and then it was every other day...for like a week... and then it was three days the next week... then I have only been home for 10 days-or less- each month since September. So, while I feel I have an excuse, it wasn't a reason to not do anything.

So... I'm going to go weigh myself (which I lost 5 pounds after being sick two weeks ago, so I suppose I have a slight head start. HA!)

January 19,2008: 196 pounds
- 10 pounds heavier than when I signed up on spark (but, 10 pounds lighter than the heaviest I've been...)-

    I so know what you are talking about...

When I signed up to see what sparks was about, I was at 193. Of course I couldn't use it due to medical problems. When I started using the food portion (not exercise) I was 215 or so (july of 06). My goal for the year 07 was to get down to about 130 or so. Ha...instead I gained 30lbs after losing it at the end of 06. By Sept. of 07 I lost 30 lbs and by the start of 08 I gained back 5 or so (scale is broken but I know there is a gain).

I've done this game before. Right now I'm sick, the kids are sick, baby has tummy issues and can't go to the gym nursery. I would love to be out of this house but I can't. On top of that I don't have a work out machine but I do need one!

Still, I'm going to get some form of work out on!

You have inspired me!

I'm sooo tired! I must sleep too much. I feel better after I get about 4 hours of sleep at a time, and when I get 7-8 I just feel like I want to go back to bed for the rest of the day! ... but it could be also that if I do get four hours of sleep, it's usually uninterrupted (...a nap or something, or the kids don't wake up for that long...) But, everytime the kids move, I basically wake up because I'm a VERY LIGHT sleeper! Especially after having kids... everytime something bumps in the house, I wake up. Yesterday my oldest son came in at about 5:30 and climbed into bed with us, and I got up and checked on our 1 year old... came back in and was just about to get back to sleep when something went "THUD" ...I walked into the kids' room, and didn't see anything in there, then I walked back through the bathroom, and one of my makeup bags was on the floor. I don't know how it got there, from where it was on the shelf, it didn't make any sense as to where it wound up on the floor... and we won't mention that the towel it was sitting on was moved around as well. But it made me feel a little better that my husband said he used the towel before he went to bed, so maybe he bumped the set of shelves while getting the towel, and that somehow moved the makeup bag to be in a position to fall from the back of the shelf behind several other items 6 hours later... ... ... .... Yeah, so anyway after that I couldn't sleep for another hour or so... finally did get back to sleep for a little bit. Didn't work out this morning...I've burned 556 calories this week, consumed more than I should have, but still doing alright. Strength trained decently, not as much as I should have though.

...and today wanted to wash dishes and clean, but I went to the store to get some stuff to make caramel, and wound up there for a while trying to figure out a meal for tonight that was less than $5.00 for four or five people. And, I found several options. I was really excited... I'm thinking about writing a cookbook, don't know what I'll call it, but meals under $8 for four or five people that are good for everyone's all around health. Special dietary needs, such as diabetic and vegetarian may be considered in other versions... I think I'll go with the easy mainstream first. But I have been working on recipes for my mom with diabetes that I could possibly cut down to less than $8.00 most of the time when I'm planning on making those, though, they are for 6 to 8 people. Haven't made too many of those though.

    I know what you mean about sleeping! I feel even more tired when I have more sleep in. I also have to walk around the house all night long checking on the kids and such. Since dh is away, I have them all sleep in bed with me so I know everything at all times. It must be a mom deal! I love your book idea and would so buy it! Let me know if you need any info on publishing and the such since I know of a great self publishing place!

So, I made some meatballs with nonfat evaporated milk... and had some left over, and didn't know what in the world I could do with it (...I don't cook that often with canned milk/meat products) the only thing I knew was that my mom and dad make caramel by boiling the can and turning it in a huge stock pot... so, I thought I'd look up some recipes... but I couldn't find a caramel recipe using evaporated milk... only heavy whipping cream...and I only had 1/4 cup... so, I decided to substitute the nonfat evaporated milk for the cream, and splenda for the sugar, and some smart balance spread for the butter... well, anyway, it turned out really well!! and I used less spread than the recipe called for... ...ok, well, anyway, my son liked it...so it must be good, right!? I put the recipe in the spark recipe calculator... and I don't share my recipes because... well, I don't want to turn over my original recipes to Sparkpeople.com. ...but if someone does read this, I will be glad to send the recipe. ... but I doubt that it will be that big of a deal! ...I LOVE it though, and am very excited! --More so that it came out alright than anything else, because I have REALLY bad luck in the kitchen!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -though I did burn myself on the whisk LoL.

Mixing the caramel with fat free cream cheese on a rice cake is really yummy. :oD Lol...ok, anyway, I'm coming off the excitement of not burning the sugar and milk... so, I'm done now LoL.

I'm going to put it on some diet soda chocola
te cake, and see what my husband has to say about it!

    Wow, wiz in the kitchen you are! It sounds good! I'm not a big fan of caramel but I'm sure that there are many desserts that could use it as a topping which would be great in lowering the cals and all. Great job on the find! Hugs!-Kat
