i did the 5k in 5 weeks spark challenge ... and i finished it today ... i was supposed to finish it with a race, but i just ran 5k for time ... and i did it in 35 and a half minutes ... since my goal was do it in 36 minutes, i feel like i won ... my big worry was if i ran a real 5k race on the road with lots of other people, just finishing it wasn't going to make me feel this good ... so ... soon, i am going to start another 5k training program, to work on increasing speed and endurance .... once i feel comfortable, i will absolutely do a race ... i am feeling fit ... but not yet brave .... but i suspect that will come with time ...

small goals ... and meeting them ...

Sunday, April 29, 2012

i'm hanging onto a weight plateau ... it's driving me crazy ... it makes me want to eat cookies .... cause if i'm not going to lose weight anyways, can't i have cookies?

um .. cookies are a metaphor, i guess ... for all the non healthful food i have been avoiding, ignoring, skipping ....

however.... in spite of wanting to eat cookies in the face of a plateau, i have been making positive strides elsewhere ... like in my 5k my way ... i am on week four day three of a five week program ... so almost done ... four more runs til done ... my next run is tuesday ... i'm doing 3 miles in 35 minutes... with some walking, but not tons ...

and ... i joined the spring into shape challenge ... doing a ten minute strenght exercise is the challenging bit for me ... i can do the cardio bit of the challenge easily, and have been for 8 weeks now ....i think in 8 weeks i have not had 8 cardio-less days ... most weeks i don't take a cardio day off ... my fitness minutes make me proud ....

i'm hoping the strenght training that i've been a bit negligent about, will be the trick to bust up this plateau ....

stay tuned ... but i guess that's how all spark people are ... stay tuned to hear the stories .... cause there's always more to the story ....

One of the ladies at the food shelf I volunteer at used to be a personal trainer. When I mentioned my plateau, she had two suggestions. One is to double your protein for the day. She said sometimes people need to considerably up their fat for a day. This supposed to surprise your body and get your metabolism started. She suggested only doing it when you have hit a plateau but said some do it weekly. I don't know if it was coincidence; but, that week I had one day that was higher calorie, high proteins and higher fat. The next week I was down over 3 pounds. I have read about calorie cycling and have now decided the my weigh-in days I am purposely going to have a high calorie day (2000-2100 calories vs 1200-1550 normally). I hope to keep my body guessing that way. Just a thought!

Regardless, the scale will catch up eventually. Hang in there!

friday nights ...

Friday, April 20, 2012

my family ordered pizza and watched tv tonight ... that's our friday night tradition ... not always, but frequently, we order pizza ..... i had half a piece of pizza and a spinach salad ... and i didn't feel deprived or unhappy or put out or anything negative ... i felt proud for making good choices ... i feel like i can do this ... i am nine pounds down ... feeling like it isn't coming off now as fast as it was when i started ... but nine pounds seems so great to me.... WOW ...nine pounds .... yay me!

i believe i'll be at ten pounds down quite soon .... but it just makes me happy to dream about fifteen pounds down ... or twenty ...

i'm really going to do this ... i can feel it .... i like it ....

I truly believe when we stop labeling foods as "bad," we do much better. When we know we can eat whatever we want, we own the decision. When we decide to eat something that may not be the best choice, we can do it in moderation and without guilt!

We ordered pizza a few weeks ago. I too had a salad and I ate way less pizza than I previously would have. Normally, I would have had the rest for breakfast and/or lunch the next day. My craving was satisfied and I ended up throwing the leftovers away as they sat in the fridge too long (a rare occurrence).

You have the right attitude! You CAN do it!

Great job resisting !!! I really love pizza and when I want some, I either have a Lean Cuisine pizza or if we are ordering out , our local pizza joint has a thin crust whole wheat pizza. We get the veggie pizza and ask for only half the regular amount of cheese.
Most places have no problem if you make a request for only half the cheese or just veggies.

Keep up the great work & keep making healthy choices.

5ks and jelly beans

Saturday, April 07, 2012

today i finished week 1 of my 5k training ....

tomorrow i am supposed to rest ... but tomorrow, being easter, is going to be a candy day ... so i need to get some exercise in .... and preferably cardio ... and it would make my week easier if i got my 5k training in earlier rather than later ... so i might do week 2 day 1 tomorrow, just to make sure i can get it all in this week ... but, it's makes me worried .... will i be ok without a day of rest like the schedule says ... i'm thinking yes ... as a rule, no ... but for important reasons, i should be ok ... right?

and then i'll eat some jelly beans ...

or... maybe i'll try to do my 5k training on monday after i meet with my trainer .. but that seems MUCH harder ...

i guess this is the sort of thing i need to figure out ... how to really fit in the exercise .. even when it doesn't really fit well ...

The first day of week 2 was sooo hard for me. But, it coincided with the time change and I think that was the problem. BTW, I do Tues, Thurs, Sat and it works well for me for the training. I start week 5, Tuesday.

I'm sure you will make the perfect decision for you! Enjoy your Easter, jelly beans and all!
